What to see and do in New Orleans...
As far as I'm concerned, rent an apartment - not a hotel room. This enables you to come and go, shop and cook/eat and save a few bucks. I like it this way as it gives me the feeling of living there.
So, get settled, wherever you choose to stay, then head on out for an exploratory walk. I recommend, for first-timers, staying/near the French Quarter and taking that stroll down to the Moonwalk along the Mississippi. Watch a riverboat go by, turn around and take some pictures of Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral. Make a stop at Cafe du Monde and get stuffed on cafe au lait and beignets (but don't wear black - you'll be wearing more powdered sugar than what gets in your yap!) Walk around the square; if it's early enough, stop into the Cabildo and take in some history, especially that of the Louisiana Purchase.
If it's dinner you want there are more choices than you could ever h ope for. My favourite is Cafe Angeli's, at the corner of Gov. Nicholls and Decatur. (They have well-priced, tasty grub, and as a vegetarian, plenty of choice.) If it is something higher-end you seek there's Galatoire's, Arnaud's, Brennan's, NOLA (one of Lagasse's restaurants) and myriad others... But call ahead for reservations and double check for a dress code in effect.
For evening fun the city's your oyster... Bourbon St. has all the booming clubs, live bands and girls-girls-girls you could ever want. But it is touristy and one the hokey side. But, on most nights when the moon is high, you can catch some titty flashing for beads along the main stretch.
Personally, I prefer heading over to the Marigny triangle (an area, not a club,) where there's great food at Mona's and top notch jazz at Snug Harbour. Cafe Brasil is hoppin' and Electric Ladyland Tattoos is open late in case you need an ink-fix ;) On Fridays, you can save a bit on a great night by going to the Hookah Cafe for dinner and staying for club dancing later on.
Back in the French Quarter, one of my fave haunts is One-Eyed Jack's where each night of the week boasts a different theme... Thursdays, I believe, are 80's night. They also host live bands, many are popular enough to draw big crowds, so check ahead in case you can't get tix at the door.
There's brunch at the Court of Two Sisters, the Burlesque review at Tipitina's (I think they are back on after Katrina - AND they have their own foundation, helping musicians get back home and settled after the storm - check out their website: www.tipitinas.com) And if you're looking for good, greasy, local grub, eat at Coop's on Decatur - they have po-boys that'll make you weep!
I recommend checking such websites as NOLA.com, neworleansonline.com, frenchquarter.com; these will give you event listings, clubs, live shows, adult connections and more and, being New Orleans, there is always a festival going on of some sort - see if you can't make it there for Jazz-fest, French Quarter Fest, White Linen Night, Dirty Linen Night, Mardi Gras... and on and on and on...
There really isn't a better place on the planet; there's something for everyone - music, food, culture, history, architecture, debauchery and booze... Go spend some of your hard-earned cash and, in doing so, help rebuild New Orleans!!!
Hope this is of use to someone :) | |

| New Orleans Bound! Posted: 8/2/2008 10:54:37 AM | I am going in August. What festivals or events are going on then. I tried NOLA ^ thanks to buffybebe, but not a thing there for August. Anyone have any suggestions? I am staying at the Ritz Carlton FQ and want to hang in the FQ for a couple of days. | |

| New Orleans Bound! Posted: 8/2/2008 6:30:05 PM | | Not sure what your dates are but we had White Linen tonight in the arts district and next weekend, August 9th, we have Dirty Linen in the Quarter. It is a fun event and will end with a second line parade. There is always something going on here. It is a slow time with the tourist so a lot of the hotels are doing events trying to attract the locals. Have tons of fun and watch out for the wild and crazy gals....smile! | |

| New Orleans Bound! Posted: 8/3/2008 9:14:20 AM | Wow, thanks Nola for the info. I will arrive the 9th - will enjoy airing my dirty laundry. I love browsing art gallerys, studios, museums... so if this is mostly an artsy thingy, I'll be happy as a gator with a cajun pinkie toothpick. | |
