They say that if you put up a photo, you are more likely to get responses to your add, but, I have found.....that when I had NO photo up, I got 10 times more responses than when I put my photo up. The minute I put my picture up, the responses stopped.

Do you feel it is better to put up a photo or to leave your photo off of your profile?

Privacy still can be had . but if they can't send a pic in the first or second email forget it, not interested. to anal

Honestly, I will very rarely look at the profiles that have no pics (although, I don't normally look at too many profiles in the first place even if they DO have pics..). A picture is what attracts me to a profile, and I'm not shallow lol, I don't mean that the picture has to be some muscular, drop dead gorgeous man lol, if the picture looks interesting I will look at the profile. It's just nice to know who you're reading about/talking to I guess.

I typically don't send an email to a profile without a pic (although I have before a handful of times), but I will always respond to an email even if they have no pic.

It's neither. Everybody has different reasons for doing either. I put a picture in mine because even headless shots attract more attention than no picture at all. However, I will not display a facial shot because I don't want to be blindsided by some nut job. Now I don't know whether a facial shot would attract or repel more people, but I don't really care. I have my reasons for not displaying it, and people can avoid me because of it if they so choose. I won't get mad at them if they won't get mad at me.

Hmm...I think having a picture really makes me look at profiles more. But in all reality the only profiles I look at are those people who viewed me. Anyway it is a whole lot more interesting to look at people, I am a big people watcher to start with.
And then I can see the whole point of not puttin g apicture up and eventually sending one, for the saftey and personal reasons. But it is always nice to put a face to the voice you are talking to. And I am sorry to sound all superficial and stuff, but looks do count for something, if you are not physically attracted to someone in my opinion there isn't a whole lot of chance of things working out intimatly, if you know what I am saying.
But that really is just my opinion!

well you know what the old saying is.....a picture is worth a thousand words.....that means there is a lot less explaining to do in your profile. or in my case a lot more explaining to do, but hey, my two fingers sure like typing so i'm not worried lmao

I would rather have someone have a picture up as god forbid I contact my uncle or some garbage like that on here. Also as someone said, looks are important, we are all visual creatures. The guy I am dating had a few pics up on his profle but wow, when I finally met him in person, they so dont do him justice..and I thought he was hot going off his pics alone. But I have contacted people without pics due to something interesting in their profiles or something they have said on the forums. Now really the only people I contact are people off the forums as I am not looking anymore, just being a forum junkie so if I have veiwed you I either think you are really smart in the forums/want to find out a bit more about you or I think you are a complete idiot and want to see if you can string a few words together in your profile/that and to find out where you live so I can throw rotten eggs and dirty diapers at your house.

I prefer a picture profile although, some people do prefer more privacy and provide it in their first email, I appreciate this and it tells me they are serious. But to speak or email continuously, a no picture profile because they dont have a picture or dont know how to do it......hmmmmm it is 2007 someone can help you.

I have a purely pragmatic reason for wanting to see a picture. How do you possibly know, without the benefit of a 'genuine' picture or webcam chat, who to look for when you plan a meet? Yes, you could say you'll be wearing this or that or you could describe yourself. But as the old saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Now, the less pragmatic side of me says, oh c'mon... you know you wanna see what they look like, as much as they wanna see what you look like. True! As an earlier poster said, I certainly do NOT wanna be chatting with a relative on a dating site (oh that'll be fun to discuss at the next family reunion).

I can appreciate people wanting to not put a picture up in their profile, because they live in a small community or just want to maintain their privacy. But if someone doesn't share a picture with me after contact is made, it's pretty much unlikely that I would be brave enough to discuss even meeting.

I like pictures, especialy from the intimate encounter profiles, . However, I do read the profiles to see if if anyone has an interesting profile in place of a pic. Most profiles have a blah, blah content since they are too bored to fill it out. I dont look at those. If women can't be bothered to write something about themselves and not post, then my guess is they are not good talkers. I like to talk, when it suits me. I have a team of cunning linguists that help me post as I sometimes run out of snappy things to say.

I stand corrected....the responses I received did, in fact, slow down.......however, since I placed my picture up on the profile, I have received Far more responses from men looking for a cheap thrill!! By this, I mean cyber chat, web cam cyber etc. I find this to rather dis-heartening......do men no longer even bother to actually read the profile if there happens to be a picture up?

Why would they? The picture is the serious part.

You're damned if you do, damned if you don't. I prefer to be damned by don'ting because at least this way no raging monsta looney nutta is going to come up to me and say, "Hey! Aren't you That Guy off of POF?" when I'm out somewhere. Avoiding crazies is more important to me than finding a date.

OK.....so some would rather not put their pic up on the site. They could state that they will send a pic to any 'suitors'. Its the ones that state they have a 'position' and cannot put one up. It just seems to kinda irritate me when I read that.

well what is the big deal not putting one up? sheesh would almost suggest "insecurities” like what does the person have to hide, or are they “not comfortable” with who they are?
People walking up to you and saying “hey are you so & so from POF?” I had that happen to me, in a store..so? I am not ashamed to be here and have meet some people I went to school and now from “the real world”.lol If someone is ashamed to be on here, then don’t be…If they seen you on POF, what were they doing there? As for nut jobs, lets be real here, how many have you truly meet or talked to? Less then 1%??? (not counting pervs..lol) We here this all the time but in all honesty I have only talked to 1 nut job and they have their pic up..lol
We all here the same stories, small town, in the public personally it usually means they are hiding something…the internet has changed the way we live our lives, it is a medium to meet people you wouldn’t otherwise meet.
But if you are truly interested in meeting someone, then show them who and what you are…no?
Just my 2 cents, I will get off my soap box now….lol

Don't slip off your soap box !! lol jk
I have had my pic up here, and I have not also. It's my choice isn't it? As for insecure...I think not. Too many people judge a book by its cover here, not my problem either, all I'm doing here is passing time till later spring.

^^ Those who judge the book only by its cover you probably dont want anyways. We're all struggling (or most of us are) trying to find that piece to complete the puzzle in our lives. Just remember......do you want a trophy or a true heart? something to think about.

Well, I guess I've been quilty of having a no pic profile, most of the time I've been on here. I've occassionally put a pic up at times, where you could actually see my face. But most of the time, I've just been more comfortable with either no pic, or the current one, where I'm far enough away that no-one can recognise me.

I have found, that when having no pic, the responses that I get, are more likely to be from someone, who's actually taken the time to read my profile.

We all here the same stories, small town, in the public personally it usually means they are hiding something…

Sorry to disappoint your conspiracy theory mind, y b, I'm not hiding a damn thing.
I've been perfectly willing to give my pics to anyone I have contact with. I just see no need to broadcast them to everyone.

I'm sure that there may be some people hiding something, such as the married men who are hiding from their wives.
But from my experience on here, very few of the people with no pic, are hiding anything. They're usually just not comfortable putting a pic up. I've gotten to know some people who don't display pics, and I must say that they've been very real, very open, down-to-earth people. They weren't ugly, they weren't hiding anything, they just didn't feel like displaying their pics to the entire world.

Neither am I. I talk to people about the site all the time. But I am on the site for a reason... because I suck at interactions with people whom I know nothing about. If my first interaction with a person from the site is in person and not through even a slight bit of conversation online before-hand, they are shortly going to find out exactly why I am here.

As for nut jobs, lets be real here, how many have you truly meet or talked to? Less then 1%???

It only takes one. The worst case scenario I've heard in regards to nut jobs is why I don't take the chance.

We all here the same stories, small town, in the public personally it usually means they are hiding something

I have a facial shot on here, I just don't display it in my profile. I also don't advertise it in my profile that the picture is here. I will make the decision who I will share it with. If people want to believe I'm hiding something... meh... don't really care. I'm not really looking for someone who's always going to be suspicious that I've got ulterior motives anyway. I've already lived with one perpetual victim who believed everyone in the world had a hidden agenda to get her.

god you just have to love the forums and freedom of speech...lol

a poster earlier had said we "don't walk around in public with lil blue boxes over our head"...I agree.. people want to see who they are talking to "its called interaction"...
looks have nothing to do with it...people who deceive can also put up a pic 10 years old..
So did this person with the hidden agenda have a pic??? shheshh people nut jobs are nut jobs pure and simple....sometimes the paranoia amazes me.."the whole world is out to get me"...lol because thier could be a nut job stalking you....if the thinking is that way then why take the chance at all???? would it not be safer to stay at home, no computer, after all there is a possibility you could get hit by a meteor, its possible but not probable..
okay bring it on, call me judgemental, I have thick skin...lol

we "don't walk around in public with lil blue boxes over our head"...
But we also don't need to walk around in public, screaming for people to give us attention. At least I don't. Perhaps some people do? Perhaps the people who do need to walk around publicly screaming for attention, are unable to see why other people don't?

people want to see who they are talking to
I send pictures to people I chose to comminicate with.
(That's the last time I'm going to state that in this thread. If people are unable to understand that the 1st or 2nd time I say it, then there's no point me repeating it)

Too funny….I’m getting a good laugh reading some of the responses of picture people trying to speculate and assume they know why some of us, possibly more private people, prefer not to post a photo.

To me it’s no different than individuals wanting an unlisted telephone number or, if they are in the phone book, prefer not to have their address listed and just put their number in.

I exchange pictures with those I choose to do so with but I also won’t waste my time with someone who doesn’t have a picture available for exchange.

We all have different reasons for posting or not posting a picture. There’s no right or wrong way to this online stuff - it’s simply a preference and I have no desire to publicize my picture on the Internet. I have no underlying insecurities or paranoia and hey…I’m not even hiding anything…imagine that. I might even venture out to the next get-together without that bag or blue box on my head.

It sounds to me like someone may have a case of 'sour grapes'.

Msg.23 says "I think that a picture , REGARDLESS OF WHAT IT IS, makes a difference for me."

I fail to see how said posters inclusion of a 'noncurrent' picture in her profile constitutes hypocrisy.

Holding grudges only hurts ones self.

OK......we have our "stupid statment of the thread" winner!

So posting a pic taken years ago is one in the same as no pic honey bun. Hypocritical imo.

First of all......I seriously doubt that you have ANY idea how old someone elses
pic is......and second.......NO......the situations are not one in the same.
At least in an old pic you can get some idea of who a person is and what they look
like. My pics are all fairly recent but I'm sure I could post one several years old
and you wouldn't know the difference......some folks don't age a whole lot at
certain times in their lives. I'm sure I'd at the very least be recognizable from a
pic as old as 10 - 12 years. My height and weight are the same and my looks are
not much different.

I also think someone with no pic at all shouldn't be complaining about other's pics.

I've heard two good reasons for not posting a pic.......one from someone who
works with criminals on a regular basis......and the other is just "I don't want to".
Of course I'd rather see who I'm talking to.......and I do wonder why someone
doesn't have a pic..... or has an old one or one you can't see well........but that's
still their right.......and the fact that I think people should post a pic is just my
opinion.....which is what these threads are for.......our opinions.

I think in this case......Peter nailed it......sour grapes.
Just because someone rejects you does NOT give you reason to insult them at
every opportunity......maybe it's time to "man up".
