What would the world be like if there were no religion?

I think that there would be less war for the most part. Religions seem to bring out the strongest feelings in people in some cases people are willing to die for that faith. I think religion in some regions of the world causes fear more than faith and hope. John Lennon had it right Imagine. I always wonder if there would be more peace or if the world would tear its self appart. Its I guess a kind of double edged sword, nobody knows if it would be peace or war if religion were put to an end I just always find myself thinking about it when persay watching whats happing in the world on tv or hearing of it from friends. When I see it I think what are we doing to ourselves with all this war and debate everything from how one raises their children to who we perfer to go to bed with and or marry ect ect ect....Do you think that we have created some safe haven based on something that may not be? I think that humanity has become far to complex and religions are becoming too many that now we have rules that are supposed to help but they hurt, like we are protecting something that doesn't need to be protected, fixing something thats not broken. Like people sending food to 3rd world countries and them not eating it because it has been geneticly altared, taking someones child away because thay diciplined them with a little spanking to send them into a situation that could be worse for them. Humans have put their faith in something thats beyond reach to any of us for so long I just wonder would it be better or worse for us if religion didn't play a part in our lives or we didn't know what it was or never heard of it. would it be the world of togetherness that religion as of yet hasn't been able to form?

trees would uproot themselves due to a sudden lack of gravity. Cheese would take 7 times as long to culture. Nike would drop Tiger and go with Emmanuel Lewis as their poster child. The spelling of the word Llama would change to Lama.

Thats about it though.

even if there was no religion..I would sTILL have faith in my Father..its not something that is taught it is something that you feel..and without it there will allways remain a sense of unfufillment in my life ,like there was for years when I turned my back on GOD and tried to do life my OWN way without his good graces...so in as far as that question goes..it wouldnt have mattered to me whether the rest of the world beleived er not....I have no choice in the matter

Do you honestly think there would be a civilized world without religion?

exactly..in early civilization I would think that in order to get society to continuely perpetuate itself the populations needed a fear that extended beyond this life in order for them to not go around killing each other so that a healthy fear of something greater then themselves was a necessity in order for us to actually have the chance to co-operate as a majority for a greater purpose then just self fufillment...I would guess we would all be ruled by tyrants if it wasn't for religion keeping the kings in line somewhat....I could come up with a better ideology on that one but its just off tha cuff

religion was a product of supply and demand.

all major religions bare traces to an age of intellectual immaturity when this demand was HIGH. Religion was evolutionarly favorable as it encouraged peace/ Perhaps religion elevated us from savages and put us on the right path. Maybe the benifits of civilization we take for granted now would have been impossible without the means of religon.

Interesting Niceguy. Are you actually admitting that Religion had a positive role in the Order of things?

I think that it would be one less thing for humanity to argue over because we seem to be in constant conflict in one place in the world or another and the root of it is always religion.

RD, although I'm a convinced Atheist myself, yes Religion has had some good effects on civilization, that's for sure. But it has had bad effects on some civilizations though with the inquiziation, the forced conversion of the native americans etc. You cannot dismiss the message of love and respect, that would be stupid. On the other end though it doesn't mean that a God exists. The problem nowadays and one of the big reasons that the Vatican is losing more and more fidels is their lack of openeness. The fact that they don't evolve with what's happening in the real world and the fact that many Country Leaders use religions to justify going to war etc. If The Church would modernize and evolve, they would gain many believers........most likely not me that's for sure but many agnostics and others who are slipping away from their Fate and the election of an ultra conservative new Pope will not help The Church at all I believe.

Without God the world would not exist! And with God there is a love a bond,a magnetic thing pulling you towards him and his ways(the some of us that dont have a block up) and His WORD, There is only his WORD if you label that religion so be it but if God( religion)did not exist Nor would the world!!!Dua!

And if just by imagination we formed out of dirt, fell from the sky, or came from monkeys without God and religion the world would be Caouse! ANd it would Suck because God watches over people and the earth and i wouldent want to be without his protection in a world of the craziness and the evil minded people!

Well lets set religion aside and look at it from a differant perspective, if there were no religion what would it be like? well, no churches for one(ok i'd enjoy that! but thats me), no faith in an after life, so no cemeterys ethier probably just burn all the dead bodies and dispose of the ash in a trash can, probably wouldn't even have a memorial service. But i think depression would be massive! with no faith people would be dull and boring and have nothing to really live for. Crime would probably go up way high too, why? because people would want things for the here and now even worse then they do currently. just a few things i can see would be way differant off hand. As for the whole " laws of physics would cease to exist cause god/s didn't exist" umm, there are scientific reasons that those things occur, and thats how you'd have to look at it from a scientific point of view... man am i glad i have my religion*huggles it*

I posted this in one of the music forums (and don't beleive in god) and it has a lovely message: A single thread in the tapestry though it colour brightly shines can never see its purpose in the patter of the grand design and the stone that sits on the very top of the mountains mighty face does he think hes more important than the stones that form the base and how can you see what your life is worth or where your value lies you can never see with your eyes one earth, look at your life through heavens eyes.
A lake of gold in the desert sand is little more than a cool fresh spring and to one lost sheep a shepard boy is greater than the richest king and if a man were to loose everything he owns has he truely lost his worth or is it the begining of a new a brighter birth?
Its from the cartoon the prince of egypt and it struck a cord to me with the first line because its so true and its not because of religion it would be a song for many to listen too because its values are nice. The stone that sits at the very top of the mountains mighty face does he think he's more important than the stones that form the base...Maybe people will get along that way someday when religions less strict with its compashon.

A world without religion....

Personally I think that in the earily days of civilization humans needed a way to organize themselves in such large groups. Going from every person and/or small tribe for themselves for food, mates etc... all the way to community living was probably hard too grasp at first. So very basic guidlines were most likely set and communicated in very... VERY simplified ways. Over time as lang. , cultures and the people grew more complexed I would guess the interepritions of those rules become mirky, and confused.. Thus, religion! Basically in my opinion religion was nessesary to grow civilization and culture, not specificly to gain any type of spiritual enlightenment.

Now adays though... ugh.
