Bin Men To Come Every 2 Weeks !!
Posted: 3/16/2007 4:34:31 AM
Just heard on the news that Binmen are to come every two weeks instead of weekly !! I need mine emptied on a weekly basis as after a week my bins are ready to overspill and the mess becomes unmanagable hence why i make sure its securely bagged !! However sometimes the bag splits and the council refuses to take responsibility and am left with litter !! How often do you need emptying and is fortnightly sufficient?

We are already on fortnightly collections....we have normal refuge one week and the recycling the next.

I do recycle so to be honest every two weeks for me is fine. But for the families that do not, 2 weeks will be a nightmare! I believe it will also lead to a lot more fly tipping!

I just saw that too macforty. It actually wouldnt be a problem for me. We have weelie bins in this area, so I bag everything and it just goes in until it is collected, and being on my own I dont produce a lot of rubbish, so every two weeks would be fine.

Now if you are talking about the amount of rubbish I spout!!! That is a totally different matter!!

VVVVVVVVVVV We are encouraged to recycle glass, paper, cardboard and plastic, so this is all separate for me. However, although we separate out plastic, I was told the other day that Essex does not have the facility to recycle it!!! How stupid is that!!

I hope this doesn't happen where I live. My bin would be overflowing by the end of the fortnight and come summer...hell the bin would smell awful! The council here encourages recycling, but only of cans and glass. Perhaps more should be done to ensure plastic, cardboard and paper were also collected in my area

I find the thought of emptying my sack only once every 14 days quite disturbing!

I take recyclables to the recycling centre when I have a box full. (only certain stuff is collected by the Council here)

I have one bin bag of rubbish to be collected each week.

Two weekly collections won't affect me really.

Blimey! We have 2 wheelie bins, green for normal rubbish, brown for garden waste (compostable items), then 3 boxes too, glass tins and paper, we are also having a new one for plastics too

I thnk if everyone has these then fortnightly wouldnt be a problem. However finding room to keep them all will be!

We are on fortnightly and to be honest it's still a pain. I have 2 green boxes for glass, plastics and tins a green wheelie bin for garden refuse and my normal bin. However the recycling boxes are over flowing by collection date and the same goes for my normal bin. Yes I recycle but two weeks worth is still a lot of rubbish.

Maybe they are refusing to empty you because you are bagging incorrectly!! The council are very particular and wont let you empty your sack into any old wheelie !! Also they dont take kindly to Dumping !!

I couldnt stand it if the bin men only come every two weeks, they dont collect recycling down my road as it is and with a baby the amount of dirty nappies i chuck out it's shocking!
also in my flats we are told we have to keep our rubbish in our kitchens til bin day, now as it already stands weekly i find the stench of poo and decaying food etc disgusting, it puts me off of cooking for myself as i cannot stand the smell. so after two weeks can you imagine what my kitchen would smell like!!!

we have a communal garden but we are not allowed to put rubbish in bins in our garden, we will get fined if we do, alot of the people in my block of flats will be up in arms if this happens!!!

We have a green bin for normal rubbish & a grey bin for recycling and they alternate which bin they are fetching..
Just up the road from me they have introduced brown bins for garden rubbish to be emptied once a month..

I am all for recycling but I have a big enough problem remembering to put the bin out never mind which colour

Is this a new colour code system for excessive dumping then ?

MSG 10 sorry luv but how can you have a pavement in your house??? Couldn't resist that sorry! Actually it was on the news this morning about peep leaving bags n bags outside which is an environmental hazard, attracts vermin etc. Our bin men refuse to take black bin bags and they won't even empty your wheelie if the lid is not shut (if you have too much rubbish that the lid wont close they wont take it).

That's been in place here in Nottingham for ages..started last year, beginning of if i remember rightly. Green bin collected one week, and the recycle bin/garden waste collected the week after, alternate weeks. I must admit though, that the green bin don't half get full less now, with the recycle bin. Just want a bottle bin now! As the bottle banks are miles away from here, and my mate has one already over her way, just different councils.

On the news a while ago, they also said that, in some areas, they have put chips in the bins to see how much weight per week is being disposed of. The council want each and every household to have a limit. If you go over the limit, then you get a fine apparently. It's a trial thing they are doing at the moment, to see how effective it is.
Thing is the packaging that items are wrapped in, should be more limited. Some supermarkets have started doing this, but as for toys etc....there still seems to be a lot of packaging round them.
The other thing that annoys me, is bin men won't take polystyrene, so you're left to dispose of that somehow yourself. Im told it can be toxic if burnt...anybody got any ideas how to get rid of it?

I suppose if one is full to bursting point, it is necessary to pay someone to take the load, or dispose of it yourself?

I have learned that this can result in upleasant odours and/or a risk of spreading disease

Our bin men have been coming every two weeks since June last year, it's a right royal pain in the backside, i recycle everything I can, but they don't take carboard or plastic, I have to get into the bin to squash the rubbish down so I can get another couple of bin bags in. I phoned up to see if I could get another bin as I have four children, and even though I recycle the bin isn't big enough. They told me no.
Someone asked what the council tax is paid for,
for a band A property,
Total bill: £896.92
County council: £649.23
Police £92.23
District council £86.29
Fire authority £36.93
my town £31.57
our district council last year£23,000 on refurbishment of council offices that didn't need doing.
I phoned the county council up yesterday as I wanted a break down of the £649.23
I was told that a booklet came through telling me the percentage of what went where and to whom, I told him I wanted figures in pounds and pence, I did get they get they get £90 million, and on top of that goverment loads and grants that take it to £170 million. wouldn't give me a complete break down.

Collection here is, one wheelie bin (black)per fortnight, on the alternate week we have a small green box for glasss a green plastic sack and a red plastic sack. with instructions on what goes in them. God forbid you get something in the sack wrong because they will not take it. They are see through. Then for garden waste we have to pay extra for a brown wheelie bin collected every two weeks. The cost for the garden one is about £40.00 a year. Then the bin men look to see if you have put any garden waste in the regular one. One old lady here had put in dead flowers from in the house, they would not take it. You buy something like a new TV (I did big LCD) box was big then try getting all that in a little plastic bag. Then a new stereo with stand.(box)
(Polystyrene forget it your on your own. lol)

I did get it sorted wet them down well and let them soak then jumped on them.Had to rip them up too. They went into two bags, one collected, the other I threw on the pile when they where not looking. Did I feel guilty? lol No way lol, went indoors opened a bottle of red wine drank it, then had something to put in the lttle green box. lol

I live in a large block of apartments and our bins are collected 2 - 3 times per week or as and when needed, guess theres a special arrangement with the council for health and safety reasons? other wise the bin room down by the car park would be overflowing with stench and rats!

Wonder how this would apply to my appartment.

We have fortnightly collections, but they are alternated, so weeks 1,3,5 etc they take the black bin. Weeks 2,4 6 etc they take the green bin. Neither bin can have an accompanying bin bag.

Recycling is every week, and they can have extra bags.

It actually works well. And does make you think about what you are chucking out.

Hmmm will we get some council tax knocked off for the bin men not coming every week?

To be honest, i would be fine with getting my black bins emptied fortnightly.
I do recycle as much as possible. At the very most, bags of rubbish for my black bin is two bags a week, but usually just the one.

The rest is fit for the green bin. They get emptied once a month. And i have 3 green bins.

But as a family of 2, me and my son. It would be adequate. But if your a large family, then maybe weekly would be needed.

But product packaging these days, a massive percentage can be recycled. And the government are wanting more people to do it.
So maybe this is the reasoning behind the new system for refuge collection?

My bins are still emptied weekly, dont think there would be a problem with that changing to fortnightly because with recycling my wheelie bin is rarely full these days, altho hope it doesnt get whiffy if we have a hot summer.

Would need to be supplied with proper full sized recycling bins tho, at the moment we have crates for papers and another for cans and glass & they are always full weekly so my rubbish would be overflowing in two weeks.

Dont suppose i can look forward to a council tax rebate by any chance then?
