| Information Everyone Should Know Before Giving Out Your Phone Number. Posted: 3/17/2007 12:22:53 PM | Google has implemented a new feature which enables you to type a telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and you will be given the person's name and address. If you then hit MapQuest, you will get a map to the person's house. Everyone should be aware of this! It's a nationwide reverse telephone book.
If a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming.
Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked. I tried my number and it came up along with the mapquest and directions straight to our house. I did fill out the removal form for myself, and encourage all of you to do the same. Quite scary.
Please look up your own number.
In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: google (http://www.google.com/) Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e. 555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on your telephone number and then click on the Removal Form. Removal takes 48-hours.
Check your own number and although this may not apply to you if you have an unlisted number or cell phone as primary contact, but you may know someone who needs to know this.
Please share this information with friends and family.

The world should adopt this law and perhaps it will save lives and the grief of junk mail and unsolicited phone calls.

Posted: 3/17/2007 2:30:45 PM | I hope you dont think this is something new.The reverse telephone system was avaiable before the days of computers. In the past you could go to your local library and look up this information, however it only had published talephone numbers in the book.I would doubt that even in the computer age it`s any different, except the ability to interface with mapping.

| Information Everyone Should Know Before Giving Out Your Phone Number. Posted: 3/17/2007 3:08:40 PM | I tried it for Canadian number and phew....it does not work. HOWEVER, anyone can go to Canada 411 or something similar and do a reverse search by phone number and *poof* there you are. If you're number is unlisted or cellular, then you are protected. Listen, best just not to give out phone number or only cell number until you really, really know and can trust person. That goes for both men and women alike. Seems a lot of men are really quick to give out their home phone numbers. Didn't anyone watch that movie? lol
Spring is just around the corner, folks..................enjoy :)

| Information Everyone Should Know Before Giving Out Your Phone Number. Posted: 3/17/2007 3:35:15 PM | | You have been able to do this on Whitepages.com for a long time as well. It can be quite handy, because not everyone who wants to know where you live wants to know that for malicious reasons. In fact, most people probably don't want to hurt you in any way. I guess my example would be that I am looking for a new place for next year. I have gotten several emails about places. These don't always have location information, but usually have a phone number. I want to look up where the house is, so that I can get an idea of whether I would even want to move there next year, so I go to Whitepages.com and do a reverse phone search, and find out whether I am interested in that house or not, without having to call or email back. And this service has been available for many years. It isn't anything new, either. It maybe speeds things up a bit, but it does not replace what was before done with a phone book and a Pearle's map book... | |

| Information Everyone Should Know Before Giving Out Your Phone Number. Posted: 3/17/2007 9:20:59 PM | You could do this years ago. Just type in reverse phone directory into your favorite search engine.
Using the information, you have a street address, last name and first initial. No need for google maps unless you want a visual. Then all you have to do is go to that address during garbage day (at night) if you want to be sneaky, grab their garbage (since it's put out on public property) and steal their identity.

| Information Everyone Should Know Before Giving Out Your Phone Number. Posted: 3/18/2007 2:16:51 AM | This little feature does come in handy for sniffing out telemarketers and phone scammers. A lot of them will have their phone numbers come up on caller ID, but not the name. You just look up the number then Google the name and you can usually find out what their game is. There's a lot of scammers claiming to be lawyers or collection agencies trying to get gullible people pay money fraudulently. Elderly people are most susceptible to these scams, thinking they are in some sort of trouble. | |
