Close the Mexican Border says the Governator!

"Close the borders in California and all across Mexico and in the United States," Schwarzenegger said at the annual meeting of the Newspaper Association of America (search). "Because I think it is just unfair to have all those people coming across, have the borders open the way it is, and have this kind of lax situation."

I couldn't agree more with Arnold! This is the one area where Bush is really lagging. This issue costs Americans millions of dollars and even lives. It's way past time to seriously restrict the unfettered access now available at our southern border.

I can just imagine the lynch mob that would emerge if we got another attack in our country that was conducted by terrorists who crossed the Mexican/American border. we need to better protect the people and the single largest exposure we have right now is this border.

I say close it down and pass the Social Security National ID card bill so we can track illegals entering this country.

One National ID card is great, unless of course you're an illegal immigrant....

I think the Governator's point is that why have a border if we can't control illegial emigration anyway.

But you know, I can't blame folks for coming here illegially. I've been to Mexico and not the resort Mexico that many Americans go to. I'm talking about every day Mexico. The government is corrupt, you can't find housing to buy and if you could, you can't get a mortgage. The unions that represent workers are more corrupt than the government. And a Mexican can come to the U.S., work as a migrant worker make a lot of money to send home.

What we need to do to slow illegial immigration is have Mexico and other countries reform. For too long Mexico has relied on the U.S. as a pressure relief valve. When people in the U.S. are upset with the way government is going, they vote. When Mexicans are upset, they tend to leave for the U.S. We need upset Mexicans to stay home and force changes. And we also need the Mexican government to reform.

I'm not against immigration and I realize there are a lot of jobs Americans just won't do -- so we need workers. But enabling illegial immigration should never be the answer. But don't blame the illegial immigrant. If you lived in what they live in, you'd want a better life too.

The part about "what would you do if you lived in Mexico?" was well written, Cadmus. This is the ethos and pathos part of the argument... but let's go into the logic of this, also. Why is it happening?
CAN Mexico create an economic climate like the US?
If not, this will never stop.
They do the best they have with what they have.
People in other countries are exploited, so they get in here any way they can to avoid that.

Jeez, WE have corruption... that's just something that happens in any government and the needier the people are, the more they cave in to bribes.

We live better here because the rich people live here. Even doctors in places like third world countries live hand to mouth. EVEN professionals like you, Cadmus.

Regarding how they deal with corruption..they already had a revolution. Most Americans don't know this, but Mexicans became a revolutionary government about 1918. Kinda knocks down the "domino" theory, doesn't it?

That's why it wasn't publicized too much on this side of the Rio Grande...

Nations with single source natual resources (mainly Oil) tend to be very corrupt. It was true in Iraq, it's true in Saudi Arabia, and it's true in Mexico. In my work trips to Mexico, I've seen a country that has a lot of potential. One place that has a lot of Oil but avoids same level of corruption is Alaska. Alaska developed a system where the citizens share the oil wealth. It would be great if Mexico did the same thing. Mexico also needs to update it's banking laws to allow credit and wealth accumilation. If I took a job in Mexico and wanted to buy a house, I'd either have to have the cash up front or pay rent. Mortgages are a simple way to accumulate wealth. Once people have a bigger stake in the government, they pay more attention (see Alexander Hamilton and his theory on government debt and taxes).

As far as corruption in the U.S., yes we have it but not to the degree as Mexico. We have strong checks and balances, independant courts, and strong anti-corruption laws. Corruption does occur but we have systems to root it out also. Mexico doesn't have strong systems to root out corruption. This is what Bush needs to stress with Fox.

But my friend in Mexico said something to me:

He said the USA is the Country of Tomorrow and Mexico is the Country of Manana (meaning they'll always do it tomorrow...)

Kadmus: I don't think you, or most people, understand HOW corrupt the US usually is, because it doesn't affect most of us. Now, I could criticize the federal government and go after our current or past administrations, but I know that's gonna cause a big fuss and make it even harder for you guys to see my point, BUT...

We had a judge in this area who was dirty as skunk snot. Spruance finally got nailed, after 30 years or so...

cjp.ca.gov/CNCensureRTF/Wasilenko%20DECISION%2003.02.05.rtf

...but in the meantime, NOBODY could get at him to bring him down. Law enforcement, private lawers, defense attorneys, DA's...

Business is business and everybody just goes along with things on a quid pro quo basis. The only reason things like this surface in a place like Mexico is that they don't stop it as often as we do; and that's dammed precious infrequently.

This is a county of 2.5 million people in an area of about 5 million and he was a judge of the superior court here. He's dead now, and EVERYONE knew this guy could be bought. Liquor store holdups, drug possessions, armed robberies...I used to know people whose lawyers dealt with this guy and according to them all he had was a price tag. The only times they couldn't get off were when they couldn't afford it.

Okay... so Arnold closes the Mexican border. This keeps out all the "undesirables" who can't speak, read or write English and have dirty clothes on their backs... diseases... bad hygiene... so desperate you can't trust them, etc.. etc...

NOW, how do you think you're going to feel after the jobs leave the country (and believe me, they are!) and our own American citizens are like that?

Do you think the overclasses want to keep workers out when they can use the excess supply of labor to keep wages down????

Someone like Arnold can easily say something like this. HE'll never be president and he'll get all kinda political "juice" and not ever have to make good on what he says should be done.

...but when you see common people working like slaves in foreign countries... don't ask: KNOW that it's going to be like that here someday if something that we don't see now doesn't happen. It's inevitable.

Why are you just targeting & stereotyping Hispanics? There are many illegal aliens from all over the world crossing into this country undocumented. They come by way of foot, cars, boats, planes. They are professionals, laborers, students, criminals - you name it - they're here! They come for many different reasons, but the number one reason they do is because of this misconception that our streets are paved with gold - that this is the land of equal opportunity. Shit, give me a break! We can't even take care of our own poor, needy, abused. The bottom line is that this nation has fooled the world that we are the greatest, and this might be true in the military sector, but the sad part of it all is that most Americans don't know how good they have it, or anything for that matter, until it's taken away. With that said, I wonder who you expect to be picking the crops that we enjoy eating? It certainly won't be Americans! There's not enough money in it!
