Classic 2D or 3D Computer Animation? Which do you like?
Posted: 4/21/2005 9:48:05 PM
As threads go, this topic more than likely, will disappear quickly. But I am curious how people feel about animation features morphing into computer generated simulations?

Pixar, bless them, keep the magic intact with good stories, fast pacing and best buy for the entertainment dollar, but Disney really came up with some 2D box office stinkers.

Is traditional hand drawn animation dead?

Which do you prefer? Computer or classic animation?

I actually like both. Why throw away hand drawn when computers help to make it smoother and easier for the animators. CGI (3d animation) is just as mind boggling as classic animation...think of all the things the animators have to do to make the toon look just right. A misplaced number or programming error and then...back to square one.

Pixar is very, very good. (Disney will miss these guys alot) But I still think regular hand drawn animation has some life left in it still. Remember...a computer might not work without power...but the pencil only needs to be sharpened.

3D for sure....simply amazing what those folks at piXar can do. I like to fool around with a variety of 3d programs bryce/poser/lightwave. Ever see renderosity.c0m? lots of cool 2d & 3d artists there, but as cartoons go I'll take the old looney toons to this cr*p now days.

I went out and bought Maya, Lightwave and Poser 5. I want to try my hand at this 3D rendering as well. I am old school but I want to see what I can do with this. I was finally able to get a twin processor to handle doing this. My Frankenstein computer is ready to create! (Evil laugh) Muuuahhhh.

Can't beat classic Looney Tunes for sheer inspiration. Chuck Jones was the master!

I am just not thrilled with Ice Age, or Veggie Tales (dull and uninspired) but then, I wasn't thrilled with 2D blunder wonders like Sinbad or Treasure Island.

I can't wait to see Sin City, I have heard so much about it.

Once you do start rendering you'll have a new found respect for Ice Age, the volumetrics in the movie must have taken some SERIOUS time. Not to mention the fur on the animals, just the sheer anti aliasing aarrrghh I want whatever computer they made it on lol

Ice Age was good. Ok it wasn't deep or as overly rendered as The Incredibles...but it still managed to deliever a solid looking film.

Sin City was awesome...it looked so much like the graphic novel Frank Miller must be very happy with it. Well...seeing how helped to co-direct it (not really directing...suggesting...but they put his name up as co-director anyway).

Im reviving this thread! Im happy that 2D is on the resurgence, and that Disney is hiring traditional animators back. I wish the media wasnt making such a giant deal that they're doing a black princess for their next film. Really, its insulting to make a big deal out of it at this point. Flash has taken over, Love the Esurance commercials, not so much a fan of anime. Indeed!

Both have their special qulities. that makes each one to stand out from loony tones to shrek/ice age.

But one thing I find interesting is the $2,000.00 to $6,000.00 per minite animation cost.

I enjoy both, however i love the Integrated CGI where you have both the real world and CGI combined together with actors to look real. Thats how they are really starting to make movies like Evolution, to name one. Video games are starting to use it to a certain extent aswell.

A minute of animation takes a long time for just one person to do, so ussually the cost of paying a team of animators to knock out 1 minute in less then two months comes in around those numbers, unless you're adult swim, in which case, the monkeys simply work for bananas.

I enjoy 2D characters set in 3D environments a ton, but thats done alot more in japan and europe than here.

I like both types, but am fascinated with 3D computer animation. One of the reasons I'm building a new computer is to explore that in more depth. I had Poser 2 (free from a computer magazine CD) , and it was a blast to use.

They offered Poser 5 ( for free) as a download last September, to celebrate the launch of the latest version. Guess who missed that one ?

GRRRRR.....

The problem with any new technology is that people will get caught up with ....the new technology. That means the actual reason for the work is sometimes lost. We see this in modern movies and computer games. People get caught up in the bells and whistles , and forget the real reason people came for - enjoyment and story.

Especially in gaming, "gameplay" has actually suffered because people aren't concentrating as much on the game aspect, as on the esthetic aspect. It LOOKS great, but it's boring.

Some of the old school computer games look primitive - but people still enjoy playing them. At that time the focus was on gameplay, as they had little else to offer.

Sin City was simply an amazing piece of work. It combined both aspects rather well, with the result being a good movie - if a bit violent.

Just look at something like "The Incredibles", which proved ( to me) the value of people using technology in an artistic way.

As a great example of technology ruining art, just look at the first "Final Fanatasy" movie. Visually, it looked INCREDIBLE.

The story was kind of lost.

There's a great Easter egg on that DVD, btw. It's a version of Micheal Jackson's "Thriller" video done by the "cast".
