Suppose you are taking a young lady or chap for a walk in the hills or woods. The plan is to find a nice romantic spot & woo your chosen belle or beau with some home made nibbles!

What would you prepare? (should really be served cold)

A nice selection of cheese and crackers, and some smoked summer sausage. Some good pate if you can find it or make it. Chilled wine or a few ice cold beers unless you don't use alcohol. It is simple but appetizing.

An assortment of cheeses and fruits like apples and pears or papaya. Water crackers or wafers, light medium sweet wine or other adult beverage of choice. Sparkley juices if you're avoiding wine or spirits.

The key is keeping it light, nothing sloppy or messy (like pomegranite or oranges). Finger foods, but get whole fruits and cheese in blocks and slice directly as you eat. It keeps the fruit from discoloring and can be oh-so-sexy feeding your date.

Stay away from any mayo or egg dishes, lunch meats, or milk products. Giving your companion salmonella or other food poisoning is probably not a good way to score another date.

I love the idea of champers & strawberries dipped in chocolate. If you find a nice stream, you can always chill the wine in the water.

No bears here, so that's not an issue.

I was thinking something like chicken salad, but that might be too fiddly.

Picnics are supposed to be fun and easy, and if you dont have an entire morning to spend in the kitchen, or its a spontantous event (the best kind!) Go to the supermarket deli, get a nice rotisserie chicken, a loaf of fresh bread, some really good cheese or two(fresh mozz is my fave with the chicken), grapes, and sparkling water. The floral department usually has some inexpensive baskets if you really want to do it up. Get good paperware, not the flimsy kind of paper plates. They usually even have plastic checkered tablecloths, to give 'ambience'. Dont forget the nice clear plastic cups, not the multicolored ones.

This is the 'tearing into' kind of meal, eaten more with fingers than silverware anyway. Dont be afraid to tear into good bread. Bread wasnt meant to be sliced anyway, its made to be broken. The chicken is tender enough that it can be sliced with a plastic knife, so that its a little bit neater. You might want to include some wetnaps from the paper section too, lol..

THis is a great Sunday afternoon impromptu picky nicky.. can be very romantic by to a lake or in a field...

It's so simple! Cheese, baquette, grapes...maybe some dried apricots, bottle of good wine. Done! And if not the wine than some icy cold water...simple is best for romantic picnics....Don't forget the checked blanket and the book of poetry.

Of course! One of the nicest things about picnics is you can drop crumbs everywhere & it doesn't matter.

Choose your poetry carefully - pond poets might be more appropriate, rather than Sylvia Plath

some nice bakery sourdough, redpeppery hummus, avocado, pepperjack cheese and a tomato, all washed down with a smooth bottle of wine (red or white, depending on your flavor)
be sure to bring a knife or two, and the corkscrew!!

:) At my fav past picnic-date, he brought the yummiest apples, sharp cheese, and some crackers. The posting about slicing it while you're eating is spot-on. :)

I'll tell what NOT to try - sushi and gelato in summer. Man, I won't do that again.

I like to take my favorite foods (special foods I eat rarely) and make the meal really special. My mate loves smoked oysters, marinated artichoke hearts, beer, a lite cracker, and I love smoked cheeses and hearty breads to tear off in chunks. I agree with everyone that fruit is exceptional on a picnic especially chilled grapes and apples with thin slices of cheese. If I have a small cooler I am inclined to make something like a pasta salad, or a fruit salad. My indulgence is to pack some really dark chocolate and coffee if it s chilly. (This picnic idea has me planning one for Spring break...Thanks everyone for all the great ideas!)
