If you could travel back in time, what would you change?Page 1 of 5    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
If you could go back in time and change one event or decision you made from any period in your life, What would you change? What would you do diferently? Please reply only if you do have an answer to the question, if you've always made the right choices, please don't reply with "I have no regrets."

I would have picked a different major in college.

Its not about always making right decisions. Nobody has ever done that.

It's about personally not wanting or needing to re-digest past regrets and instead live in the here and now. Reaching peace with the decisions i've made, both good and bad and making the most out of those decisions.

Like Sinatra...."Regrets, we've had a few"

But we've done it our way.

Not a damned thing...

But that's not because I have always made such swell choices...

Rather, because even the worst choices I made wrote on the slate of who I now am...

So taking anything back, would be like a denial of sorts...

I would not have gotten married for all the wrong reasons (she was hot, beautiful, crazy, and funny) - I would have gotten to know her better...I would have dated her a couple months longer...I would have clearly seen the very important things she lacked and then...

I would not feel so guilty for leaving - not so sad I spent six years with someone I found quickly into it I did not even like very much...

I would not be sad I wasted her time too, because everyone deserves someone special in their life who appreciates them...it is not that she was a bad person so much as she was bad for me...

oh, well, that was then this is now...

that was the "well in the past regret"

the "recent regret" - has to be a date I recently had with a truly wonderful person and I was very late to begin with - due to the most incredible bad luck- unusually bad LA trafffic coming out of the Valley--and (very late) this evening disintegrated quickly into her having an unfortunate misperception of me-due to other circumstances...which I could have handled much better if I'd been a little less annoyed I missed out on a significant portion of the date because I did not leave much earlier...
I cannot deny - my fault- but I realize you only really have once to make a good first impression. oh, well. whatever... on the other hand, things happen for a reason, and the twists and turns we take in life cannot really be regretful, can they? the chips sometimes land where they will no matter what we to to control situations.

more fish in the sea? yes...but not the really amazingly unusual, cool, rare tropical variety.

again...

things happen for a reason... we never know what is just around the corner for us.

To the two posts above bill...
Changing a bad decision you made in your past does not mean you're re-digesting the past, just means you admit you made a dumb decision and that if given the chance you would correct it. While it is true that all choices we've made in the past make us what we are today, having made better decisions could have resulted in a better us today. If you had the chance to improve yourselves by having made better choices, Wouldn't you do it?

Bill, I have also lost a great girl for being late, the problem is that I did it too many times. I think I'll change that too when my time machine is completed. Where's H.G. Wells when you need him?

^^ I improve upon myself by learning from my bad decisions and continuing to make good ones... not by going back in time...

first I think I would have waited before marrying my ex- learned more about him and his skeletons, then give it more of a go descision wise- also, I wish I would have met up with my sweetheart sooner. funny how God has a way of doing things... Good or Bad....

for those of you with a different perspective, let me ask you a question that may seem a little farfetched.

If you had unintentionally caused the death of a loved one because of your actions and you could now go back and prevent it you wouldn't do it?

This may seem a little extreme but it's just the same as changing any dumb decision, only enhanced.

I regret so much, but I wouldn't change the lessons I've taken with me and learned.

You are right. It is farfetched.

I only live in the real world though and thats more than enough for me.

I can't live in the real one and the farfetched one as well.

They just don't mesh together.

....Or maybe i'm just too logical for my own good

@ swordfishsfv:
absolutely. I also feel that every single day is a day to make an improvement of some sort in my life. We all should do this. Each day we can take another step in improving ourselves.
I think bad decisions will still be made, but not likely the same sort of bad decision I have had made before.

If I find I am interested in someone 50 miles away, fine, but if I have learned I can take off way early and go shopping in that area, then I'll already be in the vicinity and no more problem...at least related to being late, which is never the right foot to start off on.

I have totally learned from both of the above examples...and apply this to my life...there are always new things to learn and discover...more snafus to commits and the lesson learned...

Dontbebeautifu, undoing something does not mean you didn't learn from it. After all you wish you could change it because you learned it was a mistake.

swordfishsfv: great thread idea...thanks-

sometimes you cannot undo things...
here is something people do that cannot be learned from as a "bad decision" Once you decide "it's all too much- I'm going to end it all" - and do it--well, that is a decision that you cannot undo- you cannot even learn from the "mistake.

I have a particular heart for people who are depressed. Not pity party depressed- just depressed and overwhelmed. I think this can happen to the best of us.

However - some go to the extreme of offing themselves - and this is always a (as I sometimes say"a very permanent solution to a short term problem.") - I do like the fact I always have an antennae up for someone who is extremely depressed.

I have known for a very long time I have a special gift in that I seem to be able to come up with insightful and useful info for depressed people. To learn you possess a special talent (this I have learned) it really should be your responsibility to use it if it can benefit someone else.

Suicide is not an uncommon thing. Three acquaintances over the past two years have chose this unfortunate option. Not close friends, but within my egis. (egis - sp?) - circle of influence- whatever- friends of friends and friends of friends of friends I normally come across on a daily basis...I always think more and more- especially the last one- I never really had a conversation with this person, it was hello at a mutually attended event, dinner or whatever...and heard this guy killed himself- Just took a gun to his head and boom! - I had no idea this guy was having problems. I may have if I had talked with him...gotten to know him.

This is not to say at all (of course) I could have "saved him" - or I feel guilty for not getting to know him better- it is just to say, yeah, what did I learn,? well... I do have a good way with people-- I do seem to be able to reason with unreasonable people... so why not try to be a little more aware of my friends friends - and engage more- or ask about them at least...who know? had I struck up a conversation with this person, maybe I could have said something to trigger him to desire change rather than destruction...see? this too is learning...we have no idea what we say may i,pact someone else in a positive way.

Nothing. Not a thing. Everything that has happened in my past is what has brought to where I am today. Some things have been very good, some have been very painful, and there have been those moments that have been crippling. On a rare occasion, there have moments that didn't make any difference at all. But I still would not be here where I am at if they hadn't happened. So for me, living life has brought me to this point, and I wouldn't change anything.

Amazing. Simply amazing. The one "rule" was to not post "I have no regrets," yet that all I see here. Simple istructions y'all. Not that hard. I really believe some people just want to argue.

That said, if I could change anything, I would have gone straight to college after high school. Not gone back later, I feel so behind!

Also, I would have persued singing, instead of making it "just a hobby"

There's no shame in having regrets. In a way, having regrets signifies that a person has matured to the point of being able to recognize one's own shortcomings. Acknowledging regrets is all right, as long as they don't prevent you from moving forward and get stuck living in the past.

What I regret the most is not having an influential male figure when I was younger, like a father or grandfather I could go to for advice...someone who could steer me in the right paths and avoid others. What's great about older people is that they are human road maps. Yes, learning on the fly and making mistakes along the way have made me a stronger person today. At the same time, having important people in your life to teach you how to be successful the first time could have accomplish that as well... and less costly. If I had the choice, I would choose the latter.

Nope-I wouldn't mess with the time-space continuum. Everyone has some regrets, maybe they don't let them effect their life drastically, but I'm sure no one has not even one little one. Whatever decisions I have made, good bad, and albeit I have made some really bad ones, shape the person, the attitudes, and outlook I have today, which is fairly decent. I'll just let the past lie where it is, and focus on the future, and hope to not repeat the same mistakes.

I wouldn't change anything in my past. Everything happens for a reason. I am not proud of all decisions, so I just choose to apply the lesson learned from my mistakes to better my future choices. It didn't kill me so must have mad me stronger...right?!?!?!

too heavy of a topic for me swordfishsfv~I truly enjoyed reading the other's responses and lean towards thier beliefs. However, the basic question is fine just not he one on the death deal- we can't save the world. We lucky just to help ourselves & those here and now in the present. Take care and by all means be happy

P.S. next topic I hope is a bit more easygoing and fun~that one could cause aperson to want to go

I regret not emphasizing this rule a little more, if I could go back in time I would type it in caps maybe, or add emoticons so that it would be more difficult to ignore. Oh wait, that would mean I'm not happy, and I would have never learned the lesson I was supposed to learn from that experience!!!

Rules? It's an open forum. People are going to respond however they respond.

And surprisingly, some not the way you want.

If a person does'nt like the wide spectrum of answers, thoughts, opinions and perspectives that can result from a single posed question. They should'nt ask the question to begin with or simply ignore the answers they don't like.
