Bad English added to list of things Beijing Olympic officials want to ban Published: Wednesday, April 11, 2007 | 10:51 AM ET Canadian Press: STEPHEN WADE
BEIJING (AP) - Along with spitting, rundown housing and bad manners, add unintelligible English to the list of things organizers of the 2008 Beijing Olympics want to ban.
Municipal officials promised Wednesday to crack down on awkward Chinese-inflected English, known as "Chinglish," and asked the public to help police bad grammar and faulty syntax.
With 500,000 foreigners expected for the Olympics, taxi drivers who can't speak English - or signs that mangle the language - could be an embarrassment and distract from the US$40 billion being poured into rebuilding the city for the Games.
Throughout the city, examples abound.
A store selling tobacco products advertises: "An Excellent Winding Smoke."
On the floor at Beijing's Capital Airport, a sign reads: "Careful Landslip Attention Security."
On a billboard this mysterious message: "Shangri-La is in you mind, but your Buffalo is not."
In an elevator, parents are warned: "Please lead your child to tare the life."
Liu Yang, who heads the "Beijing Speaks Foreign Languages Program" for the city government, said 6,500 "standardized" English-language signs were put up last year on Beijing roads. But he acknowledged private businesses were not following the rules, which were handed to reporters - a stack of glossy documents weighing a kilogram.
"We will pass the message on to authorities in the advertising sector," Liu said. "If English translation is needed it must be subject to the standards set forth in the regulations."
Liu said a language hotline may be set up for the Games to encourage the public to report nonsense English. China's diplomatic missions abroad are assisting, Liu said, "and our people working in foreign companies are helping with correct usage."
"In the future when we set up new signs in public places in English, we hope all these standards will be followed to avoid more additional mistakes."
Liu said Beijing taxi drivers must pass an English test to keep their licence. But he admitted most speak only Chinese, and many are skipping language classes.
"The taxi training courses are not working effectively, and there is a problem of taxi drivers missing classes," he said. "Taxi drivers need to get their licences renewed every year, and an English test is now part of that that exam. But the exam is not so difficult."
"Some taxi drivers do speak some English, and that's a big change from the past," Liu added. "But the overall level still needs to improve. Some taxi drivers speak no English, they understand no English."
Despite the problems, Liu said 33 per cent of Beijing's 15 million residents speak some English, a claim that was challenged by a local reporter from China's state-run CCTV.
"I think five million is a big number," the reporter told Liu.
Liu stood by the figure, but acknowledged the vast majority of the English speakers fell into a category he labelled "low level."
"They can have very simply conversations, like: 'Who am I? Where am I going?"'
On one hand, I can see their point.... make a good impression for the games. But on the other hand, they are completely changing society for a bunch of tourists! Common sense tells me, that if I'm going to travel to somewhere that isn't predominantly english, maybe it's MY responsibility to be able to communicate in that language!

| Bad English banned from 2008 Olympics Posted: 4/11/2007 11:28:32 AM | That is a bit over the top. Lack of comunication is understandable, and don't think anyone would be offended if the Taxi guy didn't understand English...it is in China!! It would be on me to try to comunicate and learn some Chinese before I go.
I have some friends that traveled extensively after he retired from a CEO position. They went to france, Spain, India, Mexico..all over the world. Guess where they said was the absolute hardest place to comunicate with Cab Drivers......out of all the foriegn destinations they visited and traveled..... Miami..

|
| Bad English banned from 2008 Olympics Posted: 4/11/2007 9:10:59 PM | | will offenders be killed? Going by China's history of human rights, it wouldn't be far fetched to assume that they would do that. | |
|
| Bad English banned from 2008 Olympics Posted: 4/11/2007 9:16:52 PM | | ooooooooooooooooh.... Good point DJ_Smak!! I would guess that the cabbies would lose their licenses, and the private businesses would lose their business licenses... it is sort of insinuated that that is what will happen, and China is trying really hard to change our impression of them on the human rights front.... but you have a very very good point! | |
|
| Bad English banned from 2008 Olympics Posted: 4/11/2007 9:16:59 PM | Chinglish? WTF? I've never heard that term before lol

I agree entirely. BUT Green is a universal color...and the Olympics bring in TONS of money...so they'll do what they need to in order to appease those bringing in the cash.

Beijing says no red hair for cabbies Wed Apr 18, 7:39 AM ET BEIJING - Red hair and the big earrings are out for women Beijing cab drivers in the run-up to next summer's Olympic Games, a state-run newspaper reported Wednesday.
The bans were part of a 12-item self-improvement list given to cab drivers by the city's transport management bureau, the Beijing News said.
The list includes the usual pleas to be polite and not to smoke, spit or overcharge, plus the hair and jewelry tips for women. Men were told not to have long hair.
"Some drivers don't care about their appearance and this has a negative impact on the whole industry," the bureau's vice director Yao Kuo was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
"A person's hairstyle and accessories are their personal business, but cab drivers must remember they are a window for China's capital," Yao said.
Drivers who do not use their meters or refuse to pick up passengers will lose their licenses, the paper said.
It did not say if there would be any penalties for cab drivers who dyed their hair red or broke the other guidelines.

| Bad English banned from 2008 Olympics Posted: 11/25/2007 8:49:38 AM | | They're worried about poor English giving them a bad reputation??? Does that sound dumb to anyone else? Too bad they won't try to implement an environmental policy. Or better yet a human rights policy. No that's not important. | |

| Bad English banned from 2008 Olympics Posted: 11/25/2007 9:07:10 AM | | Sounds like America could benefit from the Chinese moral and conduct police. Next thing you know there will be a presidential counsel for the development and implication of Chinese moral and conduct principles into American society. Or has that already happened and I missed it? | |

| Bad English banned from 2008 Olympics Posted: 11/25/2007 2:27:15 PM | Hey...Quebec banned bad French...if the Chinese want to ban bad English, so be it. If the Olympics bring in so much money, howcome montreal almost went bankrupt, and paid for years the debt that the Olympics brought to it? Ah well....China should make a marine zoo for a lot of the oddball fish they have...probably become a world class attraction alone! | |

wow, where have you been to? around the corner of the 7-eleven nearby your apartment?
people are just gullible, or they are just willing to believe they are superior to ...

people are just gullible, REALLY? You mean "shiang rou " is a myth?
Millions of dogs and cats are slaughtered for consumption in China annually. Many suffer deliberate, horrific abuse in the mistaken belief that ?orture equals taste?
Chinglish is the least of their worries.

| Bad English banned from 2008 Olympics Posted: 11/26/2007 2:36:23 AM | Geez , I almost think it's a shame that they would roll out the red carpet so far for visitors. I mean, some of these mistranslations are hilarious. Coca Cola apparently came out as "Bite The Wax Tadpole". That's the only one that I can think of at the moment but , as the article proves , there are plenty more.
In any case, the cabbies , yeah, I can see why they would be required to learn English but otherwise , well, "When in Rome" as they say. I understand why English would be given such attention being as it is essentially the closest thing the world has to a lingua franca these days. Nevertheless, outside of the hospitality industry I'm not really sure it's fair to expect so much accommodation from the Chinese for their visitors. It's very gracious but not really necessary. Smart yes, but not necessary.
Actually, as my Chinese friends tell me , Beijing is already a "Chinglish" city so this really isn't such a bad idea. It's not just for the games I don't suppose but they are providing the impetus to get things done concerning the matter.
Che le ma ? Well, then bite the wax tadpole my friends.

Actually if you live in, or want to come to Canada, it is Canada's responsibility to provide you the tourist / immigrant the ability to communicate fully in your native language, shelter, a car, welfare money, and the ability to bring over your 30 brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and second cousins brothers step niece's great aunt. According to our laws anyways, "the people should not have to change for the country the country should change for the people" Another brilliant idea by our great Trudeau, what a moron.

| Bad English banned from 2008 Olympics Posted: 5/23/2008 1:27:42 PM | Oh no, come on don’t fix the Engrish! When I was in china last year our group got endless laughs from one Engrish sign after another. It became a game of who could find and photograph the most Engrish. It was great!
Now if they are really worried about what the world will think of them they should do something about the bathrooms! We went to a restaurant right down the street from the Olympic stadiums you could see the birds nest one from the front door and the place was nice but it still only had squatting hole in the floor toilets.
We all kept saying they really need to do something about this before the Olympics because westerners are going to be shocked when they have to hit the bathrooms as they travel around the city.
And that city is Olympics CRAZY its everywhere you turn you cant get away from it and that was when I was there almost 9 months ago!
