Posted: 4/11/2007 11:33:28 PM | I know I know this is somewhat a bad question but It is true that a lot of people who send child support checks, The custodial parent just spend the money on Crack or weed or other drugs. I'm kinda curious as to what type of response comes. Hey! I have a right to seek information....The right to free speech ! Its still a free country isn't it?

Just wondering if you truly think your ex is spending your support checks in this manner, why is your child with her? Is the issue truly about buying drugs and gambling or really about what behaviors your child is being exposed to. My measly support goes towards buying food, clothing, food... I would not tolerate my ex using drugs and taking money away from supporting my child. Maybe the better question is what are you going to do about a parent who has these behaviors? | |

Unfortunately, sometimes people can skirt the law and be bad parents within the confines of the law. Your child is the one who will suffer until this is either proven or not. Try to stay strong for your child and keep your eyes wide open for any slip ups. I'm sorry, this is really not something I've had to deal with. I wish you and your child the best. | |

I would think it would be in the best interest of the children, as a drug addicted parent is not a fit parent. Is it becuase you are unable to prove it? Those drugs will stay in the system for months if she is a regular user, therefore, a drug audit would quickly prove your case, even if they did give "advance" warning. As well, it should be easy enough to document as your children will obviously show signs of this neglect. | |

Motrin & Tylenol and sometimes some Robitussin. The rest goes toward food, rent, electric, water, phone...ya know all the stuff a child support check should go towards. | |

Really? Thats not what I have heard. I know people that were being investigated by Child Services and Child Services just showed up whenever they chose, busting one couple smoking marijuana with their child in the same room.

What about smoking? Here, a pack of cigarrettes costs about $10... if you have a CP that smokes 1 - 2 packs a day... there's $300 - $600 per month EASILY that could have gone to the kids for whatever activities they want.
Completely legal, not considered child abuse, and blows what most NCP pays in CS. | |

Wow. I can get a whole carton for 25 bucks. And yep, I use my cs to buy smokes, and yep my husband knows it, and nope, he doesn't care. His kids have a roof over their heads, food in their bellies, and are well taken care of. As long as those requirements are met, he doesn't care what I do with the rest. What a concept! Two parents that actually get along and don't bicker over money, etc! Too bad it wasn't that easy when we were together. lol | |

That $50 a month can be invested for the kids, with interest compounded monthly, it adds up. If his support takes care of their roof and food, his payments should be decreased.
That is precisely why so many NCPs are upset about not having a say in how child support funds are spent.
Good for you your ex gladly gives you child support money to buy cigarrettes - and you think that is something to be proud of. How do the NCPs who pay support feel about this statement?

Sigh. HE chose the amount he pays in cs. And yes, it's cs, not spousal support. And frankly, I really don't care what you, or anyone else thinks about it. It's between me and him, and HE doesn't care, so why should you? And smokes are not all that my cs goes toward. I support us fully on what he gives me, so no worries, I'm not sucking off the government.  My bills get paid first and foremost. It's always been that way.
And I've already responded to you before that my kids' college is already paid for. Beyond that, for their birthday, they get savings bonds. I think that's more than plenty to get them started off in life.
And I never said I was proud of smoking or anything of the like. I AM proud that we can get along the way we do for the sake of our children. | |

Posted: 4/12/2007 10:03:22 AM | It really is no one's business what the CS goes to as long as the kids have everything they *need* and as long as the parent recieving CS is fit and not doing drugs! The NCP has no say how its spend(they shouldn't either) and CS is based on their income so the child can have as confortable a life as both parents would have provided had they remained together.
OE: I recieve not a dime in CS because my ex feels he should control where the money goes.....well that and he's a dead beat. | |

20$ for smoke from cs, and she takes 20$ of HER money NOT cs money and put it towards the kids?????

And i think it's GREAT that pwg and her ex can get along on how the cs money goes!!!

You are correct, as it stands currently the NCP does not have a say in how child support funds are spent. But as these threads clearly show, most NCPs would like for that to change and have a say in where the funds go, and have the recipient be held to some accountability as to where such funds are spent. Your ex may not care that you purchase cigarrettes with those funds, but a whole hell of a lot of other payors would and do.
You SHOULD be proud for getting along with your ex - too few people make that kind of effort for their children.
But this is about payors thinking their support fund go towards things other than the children, and your point proved that steretyope correct, no matter if your ex is fine with that or not, or how well you get along. Again commendable for that fact alone, but not for the NCPs who see their children go without things but know the recipient spends their money on things that have nothing to do with the children. | |

I know that's frustrating to a lot of NCP's. My mom was one of those that spent it on god knows what and then still complained to my dad that she didn't have money to buy me school lunch, or clothes, or what have you, so on top of giving her cs, he also paid for everything else for me. Thank God I have an awesome dad that just did it and didn't put me in the middle of it, or make me suffer because my mom was being an ass.
If the CP is doing drugs, or other illegal activities, and there is proof, then the NCP needs to be in court getting custody of the children. (Instead of just complaining about where the money is going.)
I was really only replying to the cost of cigarettes, but knew I'd better throw in the rest to clarify that he doesn't have an issue with me buying cigarettes. | |

As we all know in these forums, even though we like to think in terms of generalizations, it can be easy to use personal references, or think a reference is about us personally.

He also owes me 3000 dollars, and had to go to small claims for that.....still in the process. sheesh........at least some people GET cs | |
