| Why do guys want to wear facial hair?
Posted: 4/14/2007 9:26:29 PM | I've looked through several previous threads re: facial hair on guys, but haven't found an answer to my question, so hope that you'll help fill me in.
I've discovered over the past couple of years that I really, really don't like facial hair on guys, even mustaches. I've also had several conversations with women friends who feel the same as I do. I also know that some women prefer guys with beards, mustaches,etc and many women don't care either way.
My first question is.... why do so many guys want to have hair growing out of their faces? I understand that it takes effort to shave daily. I know that facial hair is in style right now for younger guys. But what is the appeal to you guys to have it? Are you trying to cover up acne or skin problems or wrinkles that you don't know another way to deal with? Is it laziness? Do you think it looks good on you? Or ?
And what about older guys who often end up looking a lot like my dog when I pick him up from the groomer?
I recently saw a show called "10 Years Younger" in which a team of fashion people help someone look WAY younger than they currently do due to hair/skin/teeth/fashion/makeup choices. Usually the show focuses on women, but last week they focued on 2 men. Both had LOTS of facial hair that was immediately removed, and both looked tremendously younger and more attractive without. The show's fashion experts stated that most any man in his 30s or older will look 10 years younger without the beard, etc. And I have to agree...the change was dramatic for both men.
I also notice that most of the U.S. men that I've seen photos of on POF have facial hair, but most of the Brits at least the older ones, that I've seen on POF, don't. And since I'm planning a long trip to England soon, I'm hopeful things won't change before I get there! :) But when I return to the US....
Would most of you with facial hair be offended if you were asked by a woman that you wanted to date to shave it off? And would you shave to make yourself more attractive to her? If I were to ask a guy to unload the hair, when and how should I do so?

Posted: 4/14/2007 9:39:20 PM | Well - I am an old fart. And I am “trying out” a goatee.
I have not been out too much this year yet (I work from a home office) but the smiles seem to be just as pretty as they were before I grew this thing.
My goatee is shaped pretty nice and I will keep it short and “shaped”.
After looking the same for all those years - I am like a gal that is “trying out” a new doo.
I am not exactly sold one way or the other ... so yes if I crossed paths with an honest potential two way match that preferred it gone ...
I would first ask to see “hers” and if it was ........ umm (ok this part is a joke) I would ditch it.
I’ve only had it a couple of months - not exactly all that attached to it.

I think that most guys would shave for their girl friend if asked. My ex asked me to and I did then she asked me to grow it back because she said I looked like I was a kid and she didn't like that at all...lol So as for me thatsc why I have it. Most guys though especially the younger ones use facial hair to look older and/or more rugged. If a guy is going to have it I think he should keep it trimmed and the other parts of his face shaved clean.

Yes I am almost unrecognizable with it off, and at the moment I am clean shaved (razor died med trim so had to shave it off ). I have gone both ways but I like how the beard defines my face even though it's actually harder to maintain the beard than it is to be clean shaved. So to answer your question I normally have the beard because I like how I look and yes I would shave it off if asked and have as well changed how I trim it upon request which is how I have gotten to the look I normally have. | |

Guys wear hair for a variety of reasons, like protection from the elements, convenience or laziness. I've heard at least one guy comment, that he gets more respect when wearing a goatee. Maybe cos he looks like satan...lol. Some guys would wear it to hide flaws or features, like a double chin. More importantly, we should be asking, where did the idea for a soul patch come from? and does it enhance sexual pleasure? | |

I respect your desires, but I think to judge someone on facial hair alone is superficial. I've dated women who had some facial hair, and they were some of the most beautiful women I've ever met. No insult meant here, but I hope I never meet you., as I'm sure you'd only date a guy worth 1.2 million, rather than 1.1.  | |

Perhaps I shouldn't pass by all the photos of the men with facial hair at this point, and if I do develop a good relationship with someone I could try to discuss it with him then.
This is a relatively new issue for me, since my ex as well as a couple of other guys that I dated before I met him had mustaches and/or beards, and I didn't mind them at the time. | |

I had an 8am advanced physics class and since I used a straight (cutthroat) razor, and the night before was usually long and involved much  &  ... I didn't want the chance of having something that sharp next to the jugular that early in the morning. Plus, at that age it did make me "look" older. Now I keep the mustache out of habit, but periodically shave or wear a beard.
Then again- with thinning hair on top, it had to go somewhere and I figure a beard is better than ear or nose hair. | |

I think you're right that younger guys use facial hair to look older...and it often does. Sadly though, it seems to make older guys look even older too.
My 23 year old son, who hasn't worn facial hair yet, is currently on a long trip to Australia and some other countries, & I'm very curious as to whether he'll have a beard, etc when he returns.
I guess the great thing, and the not-so-great thing, about hair is that it keeps growing...so if someone were to shave it off to please their partner, it could always grow back if that relationship were to end. | |

Oddly enough, I'd have figured their having pail skin and lanky bodies they'd have wanted to lean towards a more rugged look...but it's not the case.
would you shave to make yourself more attractive to her?
I dunno....I like my hair in a certain way, but my wife wants it brushed
forward or back with gel and we have a little battle over it. I think she's given

Now I know I don't look good with a mustache, or a goatie so I don't waste time growing one. Some of my friends have some sort of facial hair and it suits them better then being clean shaven.
I have a question...how often do women shave their legs and armpits? Do they shave as often as some guys on a daily basis or just once in awhile? | |

Posted: 4/15/2007 1:01:26 AM | It's not something you wear, it just grows there, like the hair on the top of your head. Why do women want to wear hair on the tops of their heads? And what is it with those eyebrows and eyelashes? Those could easily be shaved or plucked.
I'm all for people having whatever preferences they like, but it seems to me absurd to question why someone would be how they are. Do you ask your dog why it wears a tail? Then again, some people have their dog's tails chopped off. Truth is stranger than fiction.
In my experience the women who like beards are more fun all around than the women who don't. For that reason alone it is worth growing one.

Posted: 4/15/2007 1:12:24 AM | I never used to like facial hair, in fact if a guy had facial hair I almost automatically put him in the 'no' column, but lately I've dated a few guys with facial hair and have found them attractive. Kissing them is a little odd at first but something I could get used to.
As for women shaving, I've heard that some girls shave on a daily basis. I personally don't shave a lot in the winter, just because no one is going to see my legs, but if I'm going out on a date or to the bar, even if there's a zero percent chance anyone will see my legs I'll probably shave them. Armpits are pretty much the same. I usually wear sweaters and hoodies in the winter so they don't get shaved unless I think I might be wearing a t-shirt or if I'm going out. They probably get shaved more often because it doesn't take much to do a quick last minute shave if I decide to go out or something. In the summer I usually wear shorts and tank tops so I have to shave more often. I usually do my legs about once a week and armpits about 3 times a week. I also use shave minimizing lotion on my legs that really helps make the hair lighter and less noticable so I don't have to shave as often. | |

Answer: Because I am lazy some days, because it hurts like HELL to shave everyday (I have a practically bullet-proof beard with sensitive skin, terrible combo, I have to shave 2 ways every time) and don't have a woman in life to force me to shave more often. But I do manage to shave every 2 or 3 days, depending on other schedules.
I would shave more often if some cute little hottie in my life wanted me to! | |
