i sound like a fog horn if i am abnormally tired, suffering badly from allergies, experiencing a bad head cold or intoxicated.
i do suffer horribly from allergies so it is not unlike me to amble on upstairs to my couch to sleep upright after bumpin' uglies. it is usually a good sign of post nasal drip. try an antihistamine.

joecool: Make an appointment to see your doctor and rule out any health-related reasons for your snoring like sleep apnea. That is a potentially life-threatening condition.

There are things your doctor can do to help you, but the best relief for your girlfriend right now is probably a good pair of earplugs or a comfy couch.

It's no fun sleeping with a snorer that sounds like a chainsaw. Ack. I did for many years. Ear plugs did help, somewhat, although smothering the source of the noise with a pillow might have worked better. ;-) Lucky for him I'm a pacifist.

You and your girlfriend have my sympathies.

I agree with Ooli Ooop about the sleep apnea thing. Most sufferers are very bad snorers. I know I was. The CPAP machine or surgery will fix the problem and you will have more energy.

Google the subject for more info.

I agree with the other posters that you should get checked out and make sure that it's not a more serious condition you're dealing with.

If not... my brother has allergies that make him snore a great deal and he also has to use an inhaler from time to time. His solution has been in the past to have a seperate bedroom from his wife and it's worked because they both get their sleep which contributes to both of them staying healthy and happy. As for intimacy, there is nothing lacking in that department either... seems to be the best of both worlds for them. Just a thought.

But definitely see a doctor and find out what's causing it too... s/he may be able to help you find other solutions.

Good luck!

i find a gimp mask is the best cure for snoring, must have the optional flap/zip with attached gag though!

Also known as obstructive sleep apnea. See a doctor BEFORE trying any over the counter solutions. Obstructive sleep apnea can have a VERY negative impact on your lungs and because of that on your heart. It is very common now (probably because it is more diagnosed). As a retired RRT I have worked with it. If you get CPAP you might not like the rig BUT you will feel REALLY much better and certainly livelier. Also the contraptions they are coming out with (high technology) are actually getting smaller and smaller and I saw a few last week on a morning show. WOW small as in lighter size!!!!

I am chronically fatiqued and had a sleep study done years and years ago. My heart throws hundreds and hundreds of PVC's (Premature Ventricular Contractions) which means my pump (heart) is not doing its job in an efficient manner and voila I'm tired. Now that the devices are coming down in size I might consider having the study again and being evaluated for the breathing rig.

HEY at least your girlfriend hasn't thrown you out. God I hate snoring. Once I've heard it, I can't get rid of the sound and can't sleep. BUT then I have caught myself snoring too!!!!! what am I going to do, kick me in the back and tell me to go sleep on the couch!!!!

Separate bedrooms at opposite ends of the house.

OMG snoring.............what a god awful irritate-the-hell-outta-me sound that is.

That really is a deal breaker for me. I will not listen to that crap night after night after night. No way. absolutely no way. Talk to your doctor, good luck getting it resolved. Until then, separate bedrooms for sleeping is not the end of the world.

Da plane!!!! Da plane, Boss!!!!

This, girl cant't help it, won't deny it, Dr. Strange has been witness....YEP, I'm a snorer!!! And yes, I'm sure it sucks (for those who can hear it!! Like my neighbors, Cali and Utah; my cats, oh never mind!!!)

I do go to S.A. (Snorer's Anon) and my sponser says I'm doin' well, she now can hear the F-14's from Nellis at night!

(Hey, for those of you who don't know of this, that's not funny, that's an improvement as F-14's are quite loud and can, at times, crack your windows of your house!)

P.S. Luv that Dr. S!!!

Weight has a lot to do with snoring sometimes. I know that overweight people sleeping on their backs tend to sound like fog horns......

hmmmmmmm Jumper ........

I know that overweight people sleeping on their backs tend to sound like fog horns......

that sounds like a wee bit harsh sentence. My old girl weighed in a 98 lbs soaking wet with jump boots on and she could make the shingles rattle!
When she slept on her side all was well..... but wait theres more! .......
I've had problems with my wee one snoring and nope shes not overweight and she is 8 y.o. but it boils down to allergies that make her gizzard swell up.
a dose of zyrtec syrup and things get much more peaceful.
some you might look into allergies like dust, lint, linty dustbunnies... or anything fuzzy...like my ex..... (kiddn)
Even trying a new pillow can make a diff.

OP.... do you have any medical conditions such as asthma or breathing problems?

There are a lot of different causes for abnormal snoring.... I just have ear plugs to deal with it and I find I get a great nights sleep now.....

Duct tape. Yup .. good old duct tape.

Cut a strip about 1/4 inch wide by about 1 to 1 +1/2 inches long and stretch it across the bridge of your nose. just like the nose strips ad on tv - it helps to keep your nasal passage open.

I love duct tape ..

Snoring can be caused by the flap at the back of the throat relaxing and partially closing...that's the noise. And if you are a bad snorer, you'll wake yourself up to breathe again. No, you won't be aware of it, but someone listening can tell. Trust me, *we* can tell.

This means of course you aren't getting good quality sleep AND you are missing out on oxygen, which is why the body wakes itself just enough to fix the problem.

Sleep on your side, and tilt your head back...pretend you are getting cpr. When you give someone CPR you tilt their head back to open the airway. So, I figure the same reasoning out to work for a snorer.

Sleeping on your back is about the WORST way to sleep - I swear we all snore in that position.

In kids, snoring can be caused by enlarged tonsils. For the poster whose 8 yr old snores, if she hasn't been checked by an ENT for enlarged adenoids or tonsils, I'd do so. I have 2 friends IRL whose girls just got theirs out for that reason. Esp if your child gets strep or tonsillitis and has a hard time shaking it. The one child who got hers out this past week, well, hers appeared incredibly diseased after they came out from all the past infections -scarred and enlarged. Ick.

being overweight is also a contributor to snoring. I'm guessing it has something to do w/the physiology in there and the muscle tissue relaxing but I really don't know. I *do* know that in my very overweight stbx-hub that when he dropped a little weight his snoring greatly decreased.

I'm no dr...my snoring knowledge just comes from friends and being married too many years to a bad snorer...thank goodness for divorce! It's sad that I sleep so much better alone.

Oh...and...btw... sleep apnea. Yeah, a friend of mine's dh died from it. Basically, one night he just didn't wake up. This was years and years ago, but still very sad. So if you are a chronic snorer, it's probably worth the sleep study. I also know of someone who uses the air machine at night and he got used to it - and it has made a huge difference in his daytime quality of life.

In the meantime, try the side sleeping w/your head tilted back... see if that helps.

OPie...and all others mentioning issues like this. Take a look at http://www.sleepohio.com/sleep_disorders.asp --- This is but one of many sites that can clue you in to the potential damage that may be occurring to you.

I strongly urge you to read a site like this and then consult a Sleep Medicine specialist...most ordinary MD's don't treat Sleep issues as real issues and often sent the patients to nuero or cardio specialists who have a sleep medicine affinity. Find a Sleep MD.

Oh no...most definitely would NOT have been good to have a cast iron frying pan within reach some nights... because there were times I was tempted...

I remember kicking my stbx during his snoring... and it truly wasn't even on purpose. It would either scare me or piss off my sleep deprived self so much that my leg did it reflexively. *I swear*!

I remember nights I'd be 99% asleep then *honk* and I bolt upright scared sh*tless from the sound!

Oh...to find a non-snoring man...now that would be heaven! In the meantime...I"m enjoying sleeping w/a purring kittycat, i have to say. Sure, it's lonely. Sure, it's sucks having no sex life. But I am enjoying the silence!

Sigh. Earplugs.

Thank you verdengarden.

Such a simple resolution.

People tend to make soooo much out of everything on here.

But, yes, if you snore that badly, go get yourself to a doctor, but till then, give the gift of life to your partners, earplugs.

Earplugs are a nice thought but not if you have children. I did learn to keep a pillow over my head to dull it out a bit. But can't do earplugs b/c being the momma I was the one who wke up when the kids called out. Mr. Snoring next to me needed to hear a bomb go off to wake up.

Plus, I've really come to the conclusion that snoring is annoying for a reason -because it's not healthy to do so. I mean, if a dr tells you why you snore and tells you it's harmless, that's one thing. But if you are having apnea spells. Or if your body "jolts" you to wake you up enough to get air, well, that's NOT good for the body. A better solution than earplugs is getting the snoring to stop altogether.
