| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/15/2007 2:29:02 PM | Alright, I wanted to open this up to all ages because it kinda baffles me. How can anyone, no matter their age, purport to be a genius? Heck I just had the worst date of my life with a 25 year old who said he was a SUPER Genius.
I'm 43. with a Master of Fine Arts and I have had many extremely responsible jobs and acted in classics by the masters. But could I ever say I was a genius? Gosh no, I can't even change the oil in my car. I flirt with the mechanics at Complete Auto because, geesh, fancy this, they know shit my MFA can't touch. THAT is the secret of humility.
What, if anything, means GENIUS? Do you care? Should we just forget this cult of intellect of define what it means for us?
I admit no dummy can attract me. But anyone can pretend to be smart. What defines it for you? What makes you throw someone back for being a "dummy?"
Thanks! | |

| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/15/2007 2:57:57 PM | There are many types of geniuses. Perhaps your 25 year old lover is in fact a super genius. I considered myself one at that age. I went on to get a patent in NASA related technology just a few years later, I have also done performance theatre, directed, written, blah blah blah. It takes time for people to fully blossom, I now have my own company and blah blah blah. My IQ is over 140, which is the boundary between intellectualist and genius via standardized exams. That's how one would objectively tell. But who cares. There are not too many ppl out there that will make that claim unless they honestly think they can back it up. Just ask them to tell you something of what they have done that gives them the idea that they fit into that segment of the populace. If it sounds real cool, then they probably are a genius or you're a dope.

Thanks for coming it and telling us how smart you are...."But i could never ever say i was a genius" No you would not, but you sure as hell would imply it by telling us how many degrees you have. You have even acted in classics by the masters.Well thank you for blessing us dumb Pofers with your presents oh great one.
Personally i would never throw someone back for not being as smart as i was, but i sure would throw someone back for being way too full of themselves. You must have a real problem finding hats that fit that oversized head of yours.

| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/15/2007 3:23:03 PM | Actually GENIUS is measureable by tests. However in many cases there is no practical purpose to it.In many cases that particular "gift" isolate them from the rest of the population, and makes them socially inapt. So your IQ is not a real determining factor about your success or failure in life.If it is lower than average that will make a difference.Going on a date with a brilliant person,is a challenge in it self. She /he may find you boring, while you may find her/him dull and one dimentional, let's check his pulse. You must be prepered, and willing to accept that they are very different from the rest of the population in some aspects. Most GENIUS are introverts,so if you are a party animal that probably won't work out too well. You can pretend as much as you like, but being smart or intelligent has nothing to do with any degrees one may have.It only means the ability to retain information. Working on difficult problems AND finding solution for them only the REAL DEAL can do it.You can't fake it.It is either a yes or a no. I find the idea of classifying GENIUSES as just other people is rather ignorant. They are not. They actually have the ability to find solutions in a short period of time, while a normal person could never do it.Do you think a normal person would ever come up with E=MC2.Highly onlikely. At that times many theories can't be proven. But now we know most of his theories were correct.I was talking about EINSTEIN just in case.... | |

| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/15/2007 4:21:47 PM | Here. it looks like you need help with more than the word genius wikpedia:
Humility: Humility is a quality or characteristic ascribed to a person who is considered to be humble. A humble person is generally thought to be
unpretentious and modest: someone who does not think that he or she is better or more important than others. The concept of humility in various religions is often much more precise and extensive.
Humility is not to be confused with humiliation, which is the act of making someone else feel ashamed, and is something completely different.
Genius A genius is a person with great intelligence. The term also applies to one who is a polymath, or someone skilled in many mental areas. The term specifically applies to mental skills rather than anything else, although it is also colloquially used to denote the possession of a superior talent in any field; e.g., Pelé may be said to have a genius for soccer, or Winston Churchill for statesmanship, or Mozart for music.
Dummy: Dummy may refer to:
pacifier, a rubber, plastic, or silicone nipple given to an infant or other young child to suck upon. military dummies, fake military weapons, vehicles or buildings. crash test dummy, a full-scale replica of a human being, weighted and articulated to simulate the behavior of a human body in an accident. steam dummy or dummy engine, a steam engine enclosed in a wooden box to resemble a railroad passenger coach. mannequin. ventriloquism prop. forgery. In language and literature:
Dummy pronoun. ...For Dummies a publication series of instructional books.
A slang term for an idiot, derived from "dumb" or stupid. In sports: In the card game contract bridge, the partner of the player who wins the auction. Dummy reversal, technique in contact bridge to draw the opponents' remaining trump cards. Dummy Hoy, an American center fielder in Major League Baseball. Dummy (football), a football (soccer) technique. In entertainment: Crash Test Dummies, a Canadian folk-rock band formed in the 1990s Dummy (album), a 1994 album by Portishead Dummy (film), a 2002 movie Dummy (band), a band from Chicago, Illinois In programming, mathematics and electronics: Dummy code, coding that's not used in the final product, but left in to avoid creating bugs. Dummy data, data in a database, computer memory, or other repository used as a placeholder or for testing purposes only. Dummy variable. Dummy load, a term in radio frequency electronics. Dummy file, files used to fit the space in data optical discs. ahh the ignorance of youth...poor kid, doesn't know how lucky he was What makes you throw someone back for being a "dummy?" probably reading post 1

| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/15/2007 5:38:00 PM | What went wrong on the date?
I wonder if it was the fact that the OP felt intellectually inferior? Uneducated does not mean unintelligent, just as education does not automatically give one a degree in 'class'. My .02

I think the date went wrong because she was insulted that this 25 year old kid would have the nerve to think he was her intellectual equal...Obviously the whole night was spent with her showing him the error of his ways.
|
| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/15/2007 6:22:27 PM | i think you're pretty close tdh, but i also think that she initially intimidated the kid, whether intentionally or unintentionally with her pretentiousness, and about how smart and worldy she is, and the kid being almost 20 years younger tried to act like he was smarter than he was to make up for what he felt was maybe some intellectual deficiency and the whole thing unravelled from there...
merely a theory mind you, my dear watson...
but i know when i was his age, and i was dating them her age, we sure as hell weren't talking about much after a nice dinner in a restaurant and then it's back to her place for some serious grinding...serious grinding...kid of 25 going like a choo choo train with a woman probably peaking in her prime...been there...done that...and it's gggggggggggreat!

| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/15/2007 6:45:43 PM | Tough Crowd. Anyway, I've dated two rocket scientists, (no really) and they were both a'sholes who thought they were geniuses.
I've dated some guys that were SLOW but had a heart of gold.
I guess now, I am at a point in my life where I thirst for knowlege about a lot of things. I'm looking for somebody who can stimulate that, teach me some more things, explain some of the things I've been reading, but don't quite get. It would be nice to find a happy medium. The only guy I won't date is somebody who refuses to attempt to learn anything new.

| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/15/2007 7:28:19 PM | I think I figured it out from her user name. He tried to climb her hair, and pulled out her weave. Yep, that would suck.
By the IQ definition of genius, both of my parents and my brother are. I wouldn't be surprised if my sister was, too. She was precocious, scary smart, sailed through college. We never talked about test scores. Nobody in my family ever used the word genius as far as I can remember. My father used to remark on occasion that his graduate students had been delivered into his care unable to think. He was grading papers at the end of the semester, increasingly frustrated with each one. He threw down the stack and yelled "They don't know how to THINK!" That was on a quiet day, coming out of the blue, a moment of protest, and then he would get another cup of coffee and pick up the papers and bleed red ink on the white pages. He was more likely to ask a question than give an answer. Teach a man to fish, as they say. I can imagine he had mountains of trouble dating after the divorce, if he was looking for more than warmth and affection. It can be hard to find someone to have anything to talk about between times.

| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/15/2007 7:29:04 PM | "Genius" is what scientists call anyone who tests at the 98th percentile or higher on any of many tests that have been specially designed by expert doctors and psychologists to determine an individual's ability to think. A super-genius tests at the 99.9th percentile. Geniuses, by definition, exist. However, brainpower is no sunstitute for experience or emotional maturity, and should not be confused with education. I suspect your date was trying to show you that you two could be equals even though you are much older (and therefore more experienced) than him. Yes, I think he was trying to tell you he could keep up with you.
Look for my new thread: Why does everyone assume that being a genius is a GOOD thing?

| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/15/2007 8:06:48 PM | | I define dummy as a man in a committed relationship who thinks he can fool me for long. Not only will I throw him back, I might be inclined to also gut him. | |

To truly be genius one must actively use the potential with which one is born...
It's all about potential, mental potential...

Posted: 4/15/2007 8:34:25 PM | | genius is unique, all society understands this...all cultures recognize this...Genius IS there, a small percentage, but so is the empath. In modern times genius is USED as a tool to gain advancement in society (arts, science, and yes social genius) USE your own 'smarts' for your own life and then the leftover genius in YOU can benefit the world (around you for way way beyond you). Such is the value of genius in all aspects of society. Throw back a dummy and miss an opportunity for emotional, societal or realistal genius!

Heck I just had the worst date of my life with a 25 year old who said he was a SUPER Genius.
He will probably be the next Bill Gates and you will be eating crow.
43 and 25= Not Smart, in my book of dating. Maybe it wasn't the intellect that bothered you. Maybe it was the age difference and having nothing in common.

| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/16/2007 8:47:43 AM | There are tests for various types of genius. Language, mathematics and spacial relations have measurable quantities that show a person's ability to learn.
I was tested in 1978 and shown to be slightly higher than normal for language, exceptional in math and genius in spacial relations.
Has it done me any good? Because of my brain, the government paid for my electronics degree with a minor in computer science.
Not only did they pay for tuition, I was paid $15.00 an hour to attend class, a blank check to purchase books and supplies at the campus store and $12.00 per student per hour out of class for tutoring peer students. The profs would see me in the cafeteria with 8 people at a table studying and joke that I was making more than them.
Having a these higher than average ratings comes with a curse as well. Schools and parents want to push and brag about this ability and siblings and peer students have attention taken away and feel resentment and the need to prove, "I'm not as smart as I think I am." Girlfriends and the ex wife were highly angered that I did not apply my intellect to becoming a "rock star" or the pursuit of wealth.
Having this status and ability I get exposed to many people that self proclaim to be experts and convince others of this but actually know very little. They can usually get away with it because their audience knows even less than them.
Anyone can pretend to be smart to to people that don't know what they're talking about. When someone is expounding on something you don't understand, at some level, your viewing yourself as a dummy because you don't understand and your letting the other person go on with out saying 'I don't understand what you're saying."
When someone claims to be a genius around me, I ask if they have a Mensa card or where they've been tested and which area of genius do they excel in. If they say they are an expert in computers or electronics, I can ask if they know what a PNP junction's barrier effect is or what C++ is for. If they don't know the answers, they are no expert.
If I doubted your MFA, you have a diploma(s) to prove it but I wouldn't have a clue as to how to judge that type of knowledge. As an engineer, one has to grasp a concept before moving on to a higher concept and it's fairly easy to discern at what level of understanding someone has with technical abilities. You might be able to go on an on about art history or techniques but If I don't understand you. were not communicating well.
Mensa only measures and defines the people that in the top 2% of their test that includes all categories of genius. People can excel in math beyond a Mensa level but because they can't communicate well would not qualify as a mensa genius.
Throwing someone back for being a dummy? No that would not happen. If I would do that, I would be ....
just another person that justifies calling others names(dummies).
Instead of saying I'm throwing you back you cause you're a dummy, say I'm throwing you back cause I don't understand what you say and I want more communication.
But it's so much easier to say 'you are dumb' rather than 'I don't understand' that I can believe absolutely everybody is dumber than me, therefore, I'm the smartest of all .javascript:smilie(' ')javascript:smilie(' ') javascript:smilie(' ')

| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/16/2007 9:00:38 AM | | I wouldn't have an issue with the person being a genius or not. I would have an issue with the person's arrogance. People who have the need to proclaim their intelligence (or things they have or other qualities about them) are arrogant. I prefer someone who is confident, and a confident person does not have the need to tell everyone how good they are. | |
|
| When someone says they are a genius!? Posted: 4/16/2007 9:10:56 AM | I've loved this question for years, because it makes it easier than some other questions of quality (Who is 'evil?' Who is 'Christian?') to distinguish between actuality and potential.
Suppose you have perfect pitch, but never sing or play a note. Are you a musician? Suppose you have an exquisite sense of balance and no fear of heights, but never leave the ground. Are you a trapeze artist? Suppose, that is, that you have the capacity to do something few others can do, but you don't do it. Does your potential define you, or does what you do define you?
I suppose I know as well as anyone how overrated intelligence can be. Smart people can reach conclusions out of arrogance, delusion, or other stupid reasons just as easily as anyone else can. And the dimmest person in the room may well have the brilliant idea. It happens. Smart ain't necessarily right. (Take that any way you like : )
I say a genius is someone who has produced work of genius. Einstein's General Theory. Picasso's Demoiselles D'Avignon. Lennon's "Imagine." And this is not so much about proving one's genius, though I suppose it does. No, it's really about the questions I posed at the top. If I never create something of value that few others could create, what difference does it make that I'm so smart? It doesn't make me more valuable or more reliable, does it? It doesn't make me anything but a killer at Scrabble. And that's not genius. At best, it's a waste.
Cheers!
