Paying for dinner date with 2 for 1 coupon. Will she be impressed?

My friend went on a date with a guy she met for the first time last night. They went to dinner at a local mexican restaurant. She said it was all going good and they seemed to have a connection.
The dinner gets over and the waitress brings the check and leave it at the table, She looks at it and insist on paying for her half which the guy does not object to. She calculated how much her part was and put the money on the check, they are still talking when the waitress comes back to get the check and now the guy reaches into his wallet and takes out a two for one coupon and puts it with her money and says "this is for my half".

Now she says she is a little stunned by this but he never offered to give her any of her money back and she never asked him for it. She just continued along as if nothing happened until the date ended. Then she called me late last night and wanted to know my opinion and what would i have done in that situation.

OMG! I am friggin dying here! Not sure what you would have done OP, but I know when I got done rolling on the floor laughing, I probably would have said something along the lines of: "Good I see you still have enough for cab fare home. Have a nice evening." Then turned around and walked out. I am very sorry for your friend, but that is without question, the most hilarious dating story I have heard in a long, long time. While I don't use coupons as a rule, and I don't begrudge those who do, using one that way is just bloody pitiful, and hilariously funny because of it. Wish your friend good luck.

Have fun ;)!

I would not go on a date with him again. I would not be impressed at all.

If there was a particular reason why he could not pay and he had mentioned it before I would have had no problem. But really if you want to date you need to have some money - so he should have said I have a two for 1 coupon, lets use it and split the cost.

It seems sneaky too me. And damn, that also means that the waitress was cheated on her tip.

So? What would you have done? Finish the story.

Now she says she is a little stunned by this but he never offered to give her any of her money back and she never asked him for it. She just continued along as if nothing happened until the date ended. Then she called me late last night and wanted to know my opinion and what would i have done in that situation.

I'd of shown my 2 for 1 coupon when the cheque arrived. If my date wanted to pay half of the net amount due, I'd not argue the point too vigourously. I'd hope she would be impressed at my sense of thrift, and ability to retain household money, whihc ought to be an asset.

However, the 2 for 1 coupon does have value, and it's fair enough for a fellow if parsimony's his primary objective, to use a coupon instead of cash for his share. His date would be insulted, I'd anticipate, but, she'd lose a Small Claims Court case, which I suppose is a point if such things matter.

She should have went in for a goodnight "mack" and then gave him a swift knee to the groin.

That sh it is weak! even if the guy was broke, he could have made her a balogna sandwich for .32 cents and seemed romantic.

coupon for his half... LOL!!! that's good stuff right there.

LOL..........that's some funny Shit. Reminds me when my Dad reccomended this expensive resturuant, ($160 per person), and proceeded to give me a cupon he had for free dessert. I took my lady friend, and during dinner I told her about the cupon, and she said she would get up and leave if I used that damn cupon......LOL We were good friends and had been seeing each other for awhile, and we both got a kick out of it. But nevertheless I would not advise using a cupon in any dating situation

**but on a side note, maybe she's just as cheap as him (breaking out the calculator), and would be impressed at his ability to save a buck**
LOL......it could happen

so basically she paid for him seeing as she was the only one to pay. i am all for splitting the check but this is just ridiculous. what a cheapskate . i would never go out again with this guy. even if he had a 2 for one he should of saved it for something other then a date. i would of left right there. there is being economical and there is being cheap.

I don't have alot of rules when it comes to dating, I am a kind of go with the flow kind of person...but if i did start making rules of things not to ever do under any circumstance....Using a two for one coupon on a date would be right up there at the top of the list. that it just weak.

While there is nothing wrong with two for 1 coupons, but use them with your friends, not on a date.

^ Despite what people think, you aren't REQUIRED to leave a tip. You leave a tip, if you can afford to, or want
to (some people don't approve of the idea of tips, on principle), to reward excellent service.

It doesn't strike me as such a terrible thing to have/ or use a coupon on a first date, as it would give me the
impression that he wasn't an idiot with money. And I have met very few men, who aren't. But he should've
split the cost of the one meal, after they deducted the value of the coupon. He would've looked smart and
considerate, instead of like a chump.

They should really include "How to use a 2 for 1 Coupon on a Date" instructions on the back of those bad boys. I mean, Wowzers. I probably would have reacted the same way your friend did, and just been baffled. I'm not a big coupon user, but I have nothing against coupon users. My sister uses coupons all the time. But, typically, when/if I've ever had one of those or another person has . . . first of all - I can't recall it ever being on a first date, but, second - it's always been used to basically reduce the cost of the entire meal and then the check gets split evenly for the remainder, and, the tip should be calculated based on what the total cost WOULD have been without the coupon.

But, how would a guy react if he intended to pay for all of dinner (but wouldn't turn down the offer of the woman paying her half, should she do so), and instead, the woman said, "hey, I have a 2 for 1 coupon for this restaurant - wanna use it?" But, she didn't offer to contribute money - just the coupon. How would the guys respond to that?

Hey OP, thanks for the idea. I'll have to give that a try someday

As for those posters who are concerned for the waitress's gratuity...try this the next time you go out on a date. When the waitress brings the menu, give her a portion of the gratuity up front. You say "TIP" like it is a word. Well, it may be now, but at one time, it was an accronym for To Insure Proper Service. That is why the Maitre d' gets his money up front and then he insures that the service is proper.

Well... had he told me about the 2 fer prior to my paying my half, I would have been fine with it, but if I'd paid for my full dinner and he pulled out that coupon and didn't pay a cent? I would have said 'ohhh... you have a coupon? Cool... I'll take back half of what I just gave you then' and held my hand out. More than likely he would have stumbled all over himself saying he didn't have any money at which point I would have probably had raised eyebrow look and said 'you're kidding me right?'. Then I would have shaken my head in disbelief and got up and left probably making it clear not to bother contacting me again.

I would have asked for my share of the money back for sure if that had happened to me. At that point, when someone pulls something like that, I wouldn't hesitate.

Unreal that a guy would think for a minute that would be acceptable on a date... 1st or otherwise! Having said that, IF I was in an actual RELATIONSHIP with someone and I wanted to go for dinner but money was a tad tight and I could afford to pay for one of the two dinners and we had a coupon, I would offer to do that... but the key is knowing about the truth of the cirumstances before hand. That was just plain lowball IMHO. I hope she learned from this. That's why I'll never go for dinner on a first date. I've heard too many horror stories! geesh!

She should be grateful that he did this on the first date. At least she found out about his character before she started caring for him.

I had a guy pull out a coupon for free popcorn with the purchase of a soft drink on a first date once - we were going to see a movie...I was completely un-impressed with it. Hopefully your friend won't go out with him again - it'll get worse, trust me.

Ummm, I thought about that. She can have the prize, UNLESS, it's part of a collection or a set.

A couple of months ago I bought one of those coupon books with ten thousand gazillion coupons in it, of which I'll only use maybe a half dozen. Actually I made my money back on the first one.

So does this mean I can't go out on any dates until I use all the coupons?

I wonder If there is a two for one dating coupon? Two dates for the price of one.
That's like two prunes for the price of one. I always get them confused anyway.
dates, prunes, pomagranetes, mango's - Golly gee!

so what was her opinion is what counts..
he handled the whole thing real cheap like...not much there in the way of class or trust to start off a relationship...but it's funny how you can usually find a way to make lemonade out of lemons...

for the some of the women that are so unimpressed, i wonder a couple of things regarding the concept of the coupon...

let's say the guy up front, like depeche asserts, says hey, why don't we go to this mexican joint, i have a two for one coupon...i think that'd be fine, and if the girl thought that was a joke, i'd ask someone else...

even at the mexican restn't under the origianl scenario, had the guy shown a bit of class and said first, or during the meal, how do you want to square this up...then again, i see nothing wrong with the coupon...

i like to use the five year rule on stuff like this...and if we're together 5 years and she still thinks it's foolish not to use a coupon where it might happen to come up, she probably has more money than brains...which isn't always a bad combination when looking for a female...jmo...otherwise i'd probably be scratchng my head as to how we made it 5 years...

my mom and dad celebrated their 50th about 18 months ago and they use coupons all the time...i'll have to let them know how so few women of today find the use of coupons the least bit impressive...hohum

I apparently have a curveball to throw..

I was on a date with a girl once and I was ready to pay for the meal and all of a sudden I hear "hold up a second, I think I have a coupon" and she digs one out and it was a B1G1F coupon. I wanted to argue that I didnt want to use her coupon and felt bad, but she insisted. Shes a very thrifty person for her age (23) and she uses coupons all the time for groceries and when she eats out, and Im sure for other things as well. I actually admire a bit of fiscal responsibility in a girl, but it did bug me just a bit. I try to pick the places out now where she wont have a coupon (I hope..)..

I used to get the "Entertainment" books for my area every year, used them a lot w/ my GF at the time, they had 100's of coupons for various restaurants in the area (up to abt 45 mins drive), so we'd look them over and pick a different restaurant to try out. Definitely kept it from being monotonous and rotating around the dozen or so decent restaurants in town... expecially in the summer, a nice evening road trip to some restaurant we've never been to. Hey, some were good, a few were "eh", but it mixed things up.
