2 cups Bisquick baking mix 2/3 cups buttermilk 2 teaspoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons margarine, melted and divided
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. 2. Combine the baking mix, buttermilk, sugar, salt, and half of the melted margarine in a medium bowl. Mix until well blended. 3. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 30 seconds, or until dough becomes elastic. 4. Roll dough to about 3/4-inch thick and punch out biscuits using a 3-inch cutter. Arrange the punched-out dough on an ungreased baking sheet, and bake for 10 to12 minutes or until the biscuits are golden on top and have doubled in height. 5. Remove the biscuits from the oven and immediately brush each one with a light coating of the remaining melted margarine. Serve warm. Makes 8 biscuits.

| Biscuits Posted: 4/25/2007 10:58:33 PM | | Sounds almost like my recipe; no egg and 1 tsp Baking powder per cup of flour. Grated sharp cheddar is really good in biscuits. Or sweetened strawberries and whipped cream on a fresh plain biscuit! | |

| Biscuits Posted: 4/29/2007 8:34:59 PM | anyone ever bust open a can of cheap biscuits and float them in the deep fryer?? A staple at fish frys around here. Spinkle some sugar on them or butter and honey... | |
|
| Biscuits Posted: 4/30/2007 8:45:44 AM | | Hmmmm, interesting concept..will have to give that a try...is that a Florida Keys thing? | |
|
| Biscuits Posted: 4/30/2007 9:04:29 AM | | Nope...thats a midwest Mo. river thing. It takes no time to cook them in hot grease , maybe a minut a side. They puff up and are like donuts...just add butter and honey and your good. We used to buy them 3 cans for a buck. | |

| Biscuits Posted: 4/30/2007 9:14:08 AM | Friend of mine (now deceased) turned me on to this many years ago. He didn't use the butter and honey, it was powdered or granulated sugar and cinnamon. I've only done them a couple of times, but I found them easier to manage by cutting them in half before cooking them.
RK9, have you ever had them with buttermilk biscuits. I bet those would be pretty descent too. Ooh, ooh, ooh! How about with crescent rolls?
|
| Biscuits Posted: 4/30/2007 9:45:56 AM | We used to do it at fish frys. If you don't cut them in half, they stay doughy on the middle.... We were using my buddies big ass fish fryer he made, but I have made them in a small fry daddy to. They do make good donuts, and roll them in sugar and kids and adults alike will scarf them down. And a cheap way to go as well. | |

...bust open a can of cheap biscuits and float them in the deep fryer
Oh yeah we do it all the time in Scouts. We deep fry them in a dutch oven, 5 or 10 at a time, drop, flip, drain, add powdered sugar or honey, serve and make more. The buttermilk is good, but the butter biscuits fried with wild or buckwheat honey is absolutely decadent.
We also have some "over-achieving" types that fill them, and as much as I hate it the kids love them with a shot of canned spray-on cheese, or injected with dips of various flavors, or with canned whipped cream shot in.
You can also use these to wrap around hot dogs and then into the fryer. Or use as dumplings in soup or stew. Not as good as fresh homemade, but acceptable for camping and fast frugal meals.

| Biscuits Posted: 4/30/2007 12:24:26 PM | You like which better, RK, the plain or the buttermilk?
"canned spray on cheese"... my arteries are clogging at the thought. Leave it to a kid.
And canned whipped-cream... UGH! Nothing but real whipped-cream or real butter for this kid. My granny raised me to be a butter snob... Oh, oh! new post coming!
|
| Biscuits Posted: 4/30/2007 12:29:24 PM | I like the buttermilk myself. But the regular is good also. And really, the 3 fer a dollar tastes as good as premium ones. A great tasty way to feed a large crowd at a fish fry. Fried catfish , fried taters and biscuits, all in the deep fryer.... | |

| Biscuits Posted: 4/30/2007 12:50:09 PM | Uh HUh...and I suppose you would be the one to spill the container of breaded Okra and cauliflower into the deep fryer, and then we would have to fish that out and feed it to everyone....... | |

| Biscuits Posted: 4/30/2007 2:32:46 PM | | Breaded fried tomatoes, cauliflower and broccoli... you betcha! Okra...never go near the stuff unless I'm putting in gumbo and cooking it to pieces so that I can't tell it's in there. | |
|
| Biscuits Posted: 4/30/2007 2:40:00 PM | It does tend to get a little slimy. I am not a big fan of okra, but deep fried at a Churches chicken is pretty tasty.... | |
