Join fellow PoF people for a night of karaoke at O'Brien's! Dog & Pony Sound has a huge catalogue that you can view online - and you can even print out song slips beforehand.
Sing or don't sing, it's your choice, but come along and meet some new people. Laugh, dance , sing, and applaud . Hoist a beverage or two , eat , and have loads of fun. The food is great - and the serving size makes it perfect for sharing with your favorite fishie.
Remember, sometimes you applaud because you appreciate the perfomance, and sometimes you applaud because you're glad it's over!
For those of you who haven't been to O'Brien's lately, the washrooms have been renovated, but they're still downstairs.
O'Brien's is on Heron near Bank, Karaoke starts at 9:30 pm to 1:30 am, Saturday, May 19, 2007. Some tables will be reserved for PoF starting at 9 pm (or earlier if some want to have dinner before karaoke).
The address is 1145 Heron Rd., just west of Bank St. Free parking in the lot - and on-street parking one block away.

| Ottawa Karaoke Party at O'Brien's - May 19, 2007 Posted: 5/4/2007 5:03:52 AM | Silly me, that should be 9:30 pm to 1:30 am, Saturday, May 19, 2007.
I'll fix the text in my post - I missed it when I copied and pasted the information from my last party.
If in doubt, use the date information in the heading/title. :-)
Now, if time travel was possible...

| Ottawa Karaoke Party at O'Brien's - May 19, 2007 Posted: 5/4/2007 5:54:36 AM | Hi SummerDream :)
I would LOVE to attend, but not sure if I'm in town yet, so I won't sign up. I have a question as well...will they give priority to POF people this time? I remember last time and well...the regulars of O'Brien's who weren't POFers seemed to get more "air time"...
Thanks for looking into this, Hon.

| Ottawa Karaoke Party at O'Brien's - May 19, 2007 Posted: 5/4/2007 8:45:28 AM | before I sign up I was hoping to see if anyone in the downtown or overbrook area would be going, message me perhaps we could meet up and share a cab or help pay for gas cause I'm not planning on renting a car when my flight comes in on Tuesday Karaoke does sound like a great idea seing it's the most popular entertainment we have here in New Brunswick had lot's of practice...lol...but still not the best...lmao | |

| Ottawa Karaoke Party at O'Brien's - May 19, 2007 Posted: 5/4/2007 9:49:09 AM | | Take a #1 bus down Bank, past Billings and just hop off when you see Canadian Tire on your right. O'Brien's is about 1.5 blocks away from Bank Street on Heron. No car necessary, so plan to drink up and sing 'til you hit all the right notes lol | |

| Ottawa Karaoke Party at O'Brien's - May 19, 2007 Posted: 5/4/2007 1:02:49 PM | Thanks Stephen, I guess I can sign up buses aren't usually that complicated however I don't like drinking but I guess I could make an exception seing it's a special occasion that is if it doesn't give me heart burn like the past. See you all soon | |

No one gets preferential treatment at a Dog & Pony show. Not PoF, not the regulars.
They use a strict rotation setup that prevents anyone from being "favoured". You may have felt that others got more "air time" because the rotation was so long that night, but you didn't see the same people get up more than once between your first turn and your second.
The last PoF party at O'Bs had an usually long rotation - 40+ singers - so very few people made it up to the mic the second time around. If you want to get up to sing earlier in the rotation, or be early in the second rotation, you have to put your song slip in near the beginning of the show. You can't wait for the liquid courage to kick in.
Since this event is on the Saturday of a holiday weekend when many people are out of town, I hope that the rotation will be shorter this time around.

I will let you know as soon as I find out about the other group.....It's sure fun actually having a "CHOICE" of what to do on a Saturday night!! :):)

That's great to know, even though I'm just attending to have fun and probably won't sing. Years ago, back when Johnny C seemed to be the hosting king of karaoke in Ottawa, it was definitely annoying that he'd have his favourites and basically run the night like an exclusive talent show for them, barely letting anyone else step up to the mic - regardless of what and when song requests were submitted by the crowd.
It's also been a handful of years since I've been to a Dog & Pony karaoke night, but I do remember that the rotation seemed more fair and inclusive regardless of numbers, that the host was helpful and contagiously enthusiastic, and that the sound system kicked butt. This should be a fun time, thanks for organizing it!

| Ottawa Karaoke Party at O'Brien's - May 19, 2007 Posted: 5/5/2007 4:42:26 PM | Hey Stephen and Moiraine, I rarely sing, but I enjoy watching others perform. If there are only a few people in the place, I might jump in, but microphones make me nervous unless I'm making a speech.
Dog & Pony is known for their great song selection and the fairness of their rotation.

| Ottawa Karaoke Party at O'Brien's - May 19, 2007 Posted: 5/5/2007 10:17:55 PM | Hiya SummerDream,
Yes, was talking about the rotation thing with another POF member and they reminded me that there was a huge number of people that night we went...I really liked the enthusiastic and professional DJ as Stephen mentioned, and it was fun to hear everyone sing ( ok, not EVERYONE hehe)...
If I'm in town that weekend, I'll be attending and looking forward to having a great time at O'Brien's as usual!

| Ottawa Karaoke Party at O'Brien's - May 19, 2007 Posted: 5/6/2007 2:50:42 AM | That's great, CJ! Whatever you do that weekend, I hope you have a great time, but I hope to see you out at O'Brien's!
Yes, there are aways a few really good singers (often regular Dog & Pony singers), but the occasional awkward or out of tune one reminds us that it's not a talent contest. Like I said in my invitation: Sometimes you applaud because the song was wonderful; other times you applaud because you're glad it's over.

| Ottawa Karaoke Party at O'Brien's - May 19, 2007 Posted: 5/6/2007 9:12:09 AM | The food at O'Brien's is wonderful - hot, tasty, and the portions are generous!
It's mostly pub food (wings, zucchini, pizza, etc.), but they do have other items on the menu such as steak, hot turkey/beef sandwiches, nachos, and salads. They do a big take-out business as well, especially for pizza and wings.

The pizzas are great, as are the wings, zucchini sticks, and even the club (made with real chicken and real bacon) with fries.
Al may be riding shotgun (if he remembers to email me so I know where to pick him up) from the west end.
See you on Saturday! | |
