| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 5/5/2007 8:05:36 PM | | ..and apparently all of their six original releases with Jim Morrison have been re-issued for the occasion with new mixes and bonus tracks. I have oly heard the LA Woman re-release so fr...but was awed with the clarity of the sound, the new 'effects' in places and the actual sound of a drum, rather than the cardboard box sound of previous releases. What are your thoughts??? | |

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 5/5/2007 8:26:02 PM | news to me...how are the bounus tracks? LA woman is the only doors album I'm missing....maybe I'll order it along with the new re-issue of ELP.....
...."effects"??? that sounds a little bizzare....

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 5/6/2007 5:14:17 AM | the cd liners explain it...the technology at the time and multi-tracking and what have you...I was suspicious of overdubs at first...but, after more listening, I don't think it is the case. The bonus tracks are like any other classic album bonus tracks...session jams and incomplete takes, studio banter between band and producer etc. (On "Morrison Motel" ...Roadhouse Blues in the extra tracks is quite long). I got all 6 discs for under 60 bucks..the booklets are neat with good stories and such. Totally worth it in my opinion. The only one that sounds similar is the first album, and I think that is because it is on 8 track, rather than 16 track tape the following ones were on. But still a vast clarity in sound quality. I wonder if they will put em' out on vinyl as well???...
(I found these by 'accident'...but makes me all the more curious about the new Sly & The Family Stone re-isssues...will they be as clear sounding???)

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 5/6/2007 3:28:45 PM | There has been a lot of unreleased stuff made available by The Doors themselves on their website in the past. I've picked up some mind boggling outtakes and studio chatter that is quite cool to listen to.
One outtake is Peace Frog.... Robby's guitar just leaps out and the recording is crystal clear.
Yup, Perception is totally worth it.
I watched the DVD of Oliver Stone's The Doors last night. I hadn't seen it in awhile. Listening to the commentary by Stone was really facinating. Oliver took a lot of creative license and just made quite a bit up? But unfortunately, one part was true.
The Doors (without Jim) did sell the song "Light my Fire for a commercial that was actually made... and was scheduled to be aired on the Dean Martin Show. When Jim found out, he quickly put an end to it, and the commercial was withdrawn.
Stone said this was a major contention with Ray who insisted it never happened.
Flawed film, but it really pulls you in, listening to Oliver's commentary. I just wish he had put in a little bit more of the real Jim, instead of the raving drunk most of the time?
The Doors turn 40..... may they live on forever in America's memory.

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 5/6/2007 6:17:25 PM | | yes..I noticed the guitarwork of Robbie Krieger stands out on these releases...much more a 'slider' style than i had previously realized...In th LA Woman disc stories, it said that at this stage of the band, the album was done in a week, Jim stayed generally sober (the odd beer, that's all)...and that he took up smoking cigarettes at this point of his life! He bought packs from all around the world, but the brand he chose was a French label...a place he was very very shortly going to visit! I think I'm gunna have another listen.... | |
|
| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 5/6/2007 9:37:06 PM | I bought four of the remixed/remastered albums. Im going to get the other two next week if they are at the store. I'm amazed at how cheap they are. Most of them were less than $15.00. The Soft Parade was only $5.99.
The extra tracks were interesting and the sound quality is fantastic. It sounds like they just recorded this stuff.
|
| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 7/8/2007 3:42:45 PM | Stumbled upon Strange Days @ the store today....and for 10 bucks...thought "why not?" ....the mixes are quite different...the effect on Jims vocals at the beginning of strange days is WAY more pronounced....
...the guitar tone sounds way better...overall amazing clarity worked into it....you can pick out every little subtle nuance....doesn't sound like anything new has been added...just mixed with a shit load of attention to detail....might just have to replace my old collection.....

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 7/8/2007 3:57:27 PM | | The Doors are one band that I listen to less and less as the years go by. I used to be really into them back in my teen years. Now, I don't like them too much anymore. Not sure why. | |

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 7/8/2007 6:00:52 PM | Never really cared for the Doors.
Now The Who is a different story.

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 7/9/2007 2:34:11 PM | Nah, I think Jim Morrison's poetry really does suck. | |
|
| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 7/9/2007 2:35:38 PM | | When I was younger I used to be a big Doors fan. They have a few deep LP cuts(that arent played to death on radio), that I still like. However I just lost interest and cant get into them anymore. When I was a Doors fan I remember seeing that film and being really dissapointed in it. I had expected better from Oliver Stone. Lastly I never really got the whole Morrison poet thing. | |
|
| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 7/9/2007 6:57:19 PM | I've never really liked the Doors. I always thought Jim Morrison's lyrics were pretentious.
But, was he ever cute!!!! (lol, I am such a twit)
I can't remember the title of the song, but the opening lyrics were, "keep your eye on the road and your hand upon the wheel" Oh, this song IS good....think I'll try to find this CD and play it.
Cheers, Raven | |

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 7/27/2007 8:42:22 AM | | Always a good time to listen to The Doors...especially when ur camping! | |

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 7/27/2007 2:34:19 PM | I like The Doors, but I get soooooo tired of people treating Jim Morrison like he was the Second Coming of Greatness. His myth is larger than the band.
I remember seeing the film when it came out and absolutely hating it. I remember when Ray and Robbie toured with the lead singer of The Cult (can't remember his name right now) back in 2003 (as the Doors 21st Century),and everyone complained that it "wasn't Jim." Well, helllooooo, of COURSE it wasn't Jim! That's what I liked about it. People are so obsessed with the figurehead of Jim Morrison that they tend to forget there were three equally talented members in that band.

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 7/29/2007 2:32:17 PM | what are my thoughts?
YAWN. i mean they are good and all, lol...
i'm w/dj mac & thatguy67 on this one...at one time in my youth i couldnt get enough of them, but never did i think morrison was god (now J MASCIS on the other hand...) and now i can hardly stand listening to them as soon as they come on the radio instead of cranking it up i change the channel-- and quick.guess i got burned out maybe? but i never get tired of the beatles or stones so i know that couldnt be it, who knows really...maybe too macho and no longer age appropriate, taste has just changed probably, yeah thats it haha
oh and yeah i agree the doors movie SUCKED BIG TIME what a let down indeed and rofls at kyle maclachlin playing ray manzarek hahahahahaha---what an absolute joke.

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 9/21/2007 9:45:47 PM | Glad I'm not the only "Doors" fan around here. I look at the play count on my Itunes, and they are, in order:
Light My Fire ... listen to 128 times The End ... listen to 101 times (and that's over 11-1/2 minute song) Five to One ... listen to 95 times When the Music's Over - 64 times (10-1/2 minute song) L.A. Woman - 52 times

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 9/22/2007 6:08:22 AM | Couple of my favorite Doors tunes would have to be: Peace Frog Texas Radio and the Big Beat Alabama Song
Piece of useless Information: If your a fan of the show" Cheers", than you know they show them in the mens bathroom sometimes...If you look close written on the wall is: Show me the way to the next Whiskey Bar

People are so obsessed with the figurehead of Jim Morrison that they tend to forget there were three equally talented members in that band. It was Ian Astbury from The Cult. John Densmore wasn't part of D21C either, no one complained about it not being the same w/o the original drummer. Go figure.

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 9/22/2007 5:15:59 PM | Ian Astbury IS a good replacement... he even looks like him when he grows his beard out.
The Doors are very good... I'm going to have to get their whole collection pretty soon.

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 9/24/2007 8:21:23 PM | | Love Peace Frog & Roadhouse Blues. Agree w/ above. Jim Morrison's voice was distinctive, but the music was made by the men behind him. | |

| The Doors turn 40... Posted: 9/25/2007 10:19:33 PM | The Doors w/Morrison, did a pretty cool cover of Gloria. | |
