| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy! Posted: 5/6/2007 6:26:39 PM | This works great and is a whole lot of fun. It's good for when all your family is together, or you have company, & no one has to wait, and they can each have their omelet their own special way. Give them each a quart sized ziploc freezer bag, and have them write their name on it with permanent marker. (It's also good for when you just don't want to clean up an omelet skillet after breakfast:-) Crack 2 eggs (large or extra-large) into the bag (do not use more than 2 eggs at a time.) Zip the bag and shake to combine the eggs. Put out a variety of cut up ingredients such as: cheeses, onion, green pepper, mushrooms, olives, tomato, salsa, etc. Have each person add the prepared ingredients of choice to their bag & shake it again. (Make sure to get the air out of the bag before you zip it up.)
In a deep kettle, place the bags into rolling, boiling water for exactly 13 minutes. (You can usually cook 6 to 8 omelets in a large pot.) For more, make another pot of boiling water.
When done boiling, open the bags & the omelet will roll out easily. Be prepared, everyone will be totally amazed. (It is a great conversations starter because everybody will think you've totally flipped your wig) The really nice part is everyone's meal is done at the same time, and there's no mess to clean up! It's nice to serve this with some fresh fruit or coffee cake. everyone gets involved in the process & a it's a great conversation starter.

| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy! Posted: 5/7/2007 7:27:03 AM | Windkist & comatoso, when I did it, it worked perfect! I love the looks on peoples faces when you do this, they're like incredulous. Gee comatoso, I never thought about it for camping, but I guess as long as you've got a boiling kettle of water it doesn't matter where you are. Good idea, will have to pass this along to my camping friends. Thanks! Oh...and have a Happy Mother's Day, too! | |

| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy! Posted: 5/7/2007 7:54:20 AM | You don't want to cook in plastic where oils are involved. And eggs are full of oils.
It's one of the few things that helps plastic break down and it's quite bad for you.

| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy! Posted: 5/7/2007 9:34:33 AM | There are estrogens and all sorts of nasty things in there...so instead of plastic bags...hmmm what could we use? Have to be something natural...
Lambskin...now what would I have in the house or commercially available...oh yeah....I'm just not sure Trojan Man would approve! Then again, all mine are WAY past the expiration date!
Be more like a omelet roll tho...
Cheers! | |

| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy! Posted: 5/7/2007 9:39:14 AM | | i wouldnt be too concerned with whatever oils are in eggs breaking the plastic down...they would have to stay in the bags too lonf to do much...the eggs would likely spoil by that time anyway...so enjoy your bagged omelets without guilt | |

| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy! Posted: 5/7/2007 9:59:06 AM | I'm with fistncuffs on that, I don't think the eggs would be in the plastic long enough to break down anything. Besides, it's not like you're doing it every day, and it's only in the bag for 13 minutes. Hmmmmm, onesimpleneed, guess we'd have to rename that a Trojan omelet. | |

| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy! Posted: 5/7/2007 10:57:56 AM | | Just wondering.............do you think this would work using canning jars instead? The concept is awesome but I personally dislike the idea of cooking in plastic, especially after reading the info on the link that was presented. I will certainly give this a try using jars at some point and will let you know how it works. | |

| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy Posted: 5/7/2007 11:19:22 AM | Cook in plastic to a GAIN WEIGHT and Men; Lower your sperm count, and grow Man-Boobs
"After learning last week that boiling freezer bags is not recommended I decided to do a little more research about polyethylene plastic, the main "ingredient" in plastic bags ...."And as it turns out, polyethylene melts."
(source http://www.megnut.com/2007/04/the-dangers-of-polyethylene-plastic, Posted on April 24, 2007)
The synethic estrogens in our bodies, experts suggest, may be the reason for excess weight gain (estrogen controls fat development & storage), early onset of puberty, and the development of Man BOOBS. (Seriously, the cases of a condition wherein men develop quite a bit of tissue there, has increased significantly from previous decades.) Tough guys, do you WANT tto have more ESTROGEN in your bodies? (source: just me, Commfreegirl) . . . "Even if you think your food will cook well below the melting point, there's still the issue of transference: molecules of the chemicals in the plastic can leach into the food or beverage. These chemicals are added to the plastic during the manufacturing process and some studies have shown they can find their ways into our bodies, especially when heated." (source: http://www.megnut.com/2007/04/the-dangers-of-polyethylene-plastic, Posted on April 24, 2007)
Of course, this is one of those crazy ideas put forth by extremists, like there's a whole in the ozone, the climate is changing, or smoking increases your risk of certain cancers. Ridiculous, just read what the GLOBE and MAIL has to say....
"Are plastic products coated in peril? MARTIN MITTELSTAEDT ENVIRONMENT REPORTER May 31, 2006 at 12:57 AM EDT
....Experiments on lab animals exposed to____small____ doses of BPA have linked it to _ low sperm counts_, _the earlier onset of puberty_ , _ insulin resistance_ and _diabetes_, _prostate abnormalities_ and skewed mammary gland development, among other effects. Some researchers, such as Dr. vom Saal, worry that these sorts of adverse effects, if they occur in people, seem to mirror recent human disease and health trends. .... (emphasis [_text_ ] added by _me_ ~ commfree girl)
"the lowest dose to date was at exposures ____1,000 ___times lower than the amount Health Canada deems safe_. The results of that experiment, published last year by researchers at Tufts University in Boston, involved exposing pregnant mice to 25 parts per trillion of BPA, a minute amount that was still enough to skew the development of mammary gland tissue in their female pups when they reached puberty"....
..."The same effect, if it occurred in humans, would lead to an increase in the number of sites where _breast cancers may occur_ ..."
It may be fast and easy with quick clean-up, yeah and once probably won't kill you, but RX11sS is right!!!! its not safe to cook in plastic at all.
i'd like to SUGGEST, COOKING IN A MULTI-EGG POACHER INSTEAD. Put your ingredients on top, or stir 'em in, rub a litle butter inside the egg cups before hand (like greasing a cookie sheet) and the eggs will slide out like, well....like butter
While I am here, if you're pregnant, trying to conceive (or just generally concerned about issues listed above), consider buying your milk in the carboard containers, or hard plastic milk jugs; They leach LESS synthetic hormones. And for heaven's sake, don't microwave food in plastic containers.
I know its convenient, you might want to weigh the short term EFFORT vs. Long term EFFECT. Walking over the cupboard and getting a dishplate vs. ..... Man Boobs

| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy! Posted: 5/7/2007 12:42:13 PM | Call Me The Breeze (msg 13) Gee, I never thought about canning jars. I would think that they'd have to be hot first just like when you're canning. Maybe if the jars were heated, and the egg mixture mixed in a different jar and poured in it would work. Thanks for the thought...will have to give it a test spin and see.
commfreegirl & rsx11s, thanks for the input.
FistnCuffs (msg 16) I was thinking the same thing about the boil-in-bag products too.

At least the estrogen from plastics...consuming it over all these years...now I know why I can and it also explains why my ovaries hurt!
I avoid plastic and aluminum whenever I can.
Now back to the Trojan omlette...
would that be made with....SAUSAGE?

I just read this whole thread... and I was like... COOL! Oooh! Wait... damn that sucks.... OH! Oh. Bad. Damn. That sucks.
All in one thread. About eggs. Seemed like such a good idea too. I was about to give it a try.

| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy! Posted: 5/7/2007 3:38:15 PM | wow sounds good, great for camping too.
Not only that but I can grow my own boobs with it and take my profile off of POF to boot, wOOt !!!

| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy! Posted: 5/7/2007 3:41:39 PM | Lol, love the recipe, can hardly wait to try it. And laughed even harder at the buzz-killers: I think the point, as was raised by the thread author, is total dose: this is a once a year thing, remember, then I promise to stop eating plastic bags. And if we're talking food safety, soy products would have the most estrogen, bean sprouts are the #1 food hazard, 'organic' means it was fertilised with poo, and bottled water is making toddlers teeth rot. Thanks, maplesweet. Will let you know how the experiment turned out. Spinach and potato omelet: my favourite! | |

| Ziploc Omelets - Quick & Easy! Posted: 5/7/2007 3:47:09 PM | I showed this trick to my scouts and they loved.
Also, put an egg into a paper cup full of water. Place the paper cup in the fire and the egg will soon become hardboiled. The paper cup will not burn while the water is in it.
Water boils off at 212 F. Paper burns at 454 F. Obviously if the water is in the cup, the cup will not reach the full burning temperature.
Next week will learn how to cook bacon in a paper bag.

It all depends on size, I think. Some might be made with Tofu Pups.
