| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/8/2007 8:20:00 AM | | Seriously, like so many people talk bad about it and they don't know it's history. Many Emo people tend to be very very nice sensitive people. Plus the music's awsome from Rites of Spring and Moss Icon all the way up to Sunny Day Real Estate (who's influenced Dashboard Confessional by the way) Just want to know why people hate a genre they don't understand. | |

That being said, the music is pretty whiny alot of the time. Most of them should just grab the razor blade and end it all already.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/8/2007 9:22:37 AM | | The same reason that other genres are hated. People often times will reject what they dont understand, or have a bad experience with something or someone and base their decision on that. You cant really let it get to you, what you like is what you like, and who you are is who you are. People will accept it or they wont. | |

...and after hearing the stuff I've heard...you really begin to realize the lack of creativity in that music....but you probably wouldn't understand the stuff I listen to....c'est la vie...

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/8/2007 9:56:25 AM | | Alot of people diss it as a "trend" I've been accused of being an Emo for over about 7 years Emos are the nicest people when I moved from near Boston I wanted to see the Get Up Kids again but because I moved I couldnt see them it would be too inconvienent, and the Emo people comforted me =) so Emo people tend to be very nice. Theres a melancholy but you can seem depressed and still feel good some people have a meloncholic disposition. Allthough I myself am not an Emo I like alot of what is considered Emo (Like Quicksand, Moss Icon, and Rites of Spring, hey you didnt seriously think Rain on my interest section refered to the weather condition did you? Like seriously...) And some say MCR is Emo (they are not) and I've seen them in concert they put on a show as with Taking Back Sunday (hardcore punk mistaken for Emo) who also has a fun show =) | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/8/2007 10:00:28 AM | | Emo is shorthand for "Emotional hardcore" which distinguishes it from conventional hardcore punk by having melodic lerics and singing about personal relationship issues, and sometimes even political issues. The loud soft dynamic is why Emo's it's own catagory. | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/8/2007 12:31:48 PM | | Hate? It's just another silly trend young people get caught up in while trying to figure out their identity. You happen to be young, the Emo trend happens to be one of the current "underground" social identity trends. I'm only 10 years older than you and I remember the exact same words you're using being spoken about people who were into what was called "alternative" music. "They just don't understand." Um yea, we do, we're just a bit older now and mature enough to let you play it out without embarrassing you about it. One day the saying, "You're unique, just like everyone else" will make perfect sense, and you'll be beyond the phase you're in now. See you on the other side! | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/8/2007 6:31:03 PM | | The same reason they dissed glam rock in the 80s', nu metal in the 90s'. Its a trend, a teenage trend. Not that that's bad per say, just that it is in fact a trend, and people hate teens and their wares, and trends are simply great for bashing and making you feel better about yourself, lol. Never got into emo myself, was emo before emo came about, so I passed go. Couldn't name a proper emo band if my life depended on it. I'm sure there's some good tunes, like all genres, I'm just past scenes and things. Some pretty emo ladies out there for sure! | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/8/2007 8:37:05 PM | Given the fact that 'Emo' came full tilt in my Junior/Senior Year at High School, I'll shed a light on it...if it hasn't been already...and for you to understand this, I need to get into my High School, because, it's probably different hear then anywhere else. My High School was, well...different.
Basically...the short of it...A bunch of emotional people that hate life, think they have problems, think that life isn't worth living and love the concept of death, but they're all too wimpy to actually commit suicide, so they cut themselves, and put band-aids on or cover them up with long sleeve shirts, some attempt to OD on pills and right before they pass out, they call 9-1-1...That's basic emo around my old school.
My school was about 65-70% upper class with 15-25% middle class, and the rest lower class...so you had the upper class kids whom everyone hated, even themselves, they drove around in brand new BMWs, Mercedes Benzes, and one brand new Austin Martin Vanquish which was, "It was a Christmas present from my daddy." and every single emokid was part of the 'upper class' of the school, ****ing and complaining how horrible his/her life was...soon the clique, like so many in high school, of Emo started...with every clique, you had the initiation...
Jocks had their own way...you had to be publicly humiliated in the shower/locker room...
Punks had theirs...you had to destroy something...more the value, the more respect you gained.
The Thugs had theirs...guys would get jumped in, and girls would be raped in...I’m not kidding either.
And Emo's had theirs......[WARNING: VULGER]...the new member had to eat a piece of bread that all other members...[I MEAN IT: VULGER]...ejaculated onto...
Most guys in the group were homosexual from the beginning...or at least Bi-sexual, but what mainly ran in the group was sex, drugs, and suicide...well...attempted suicide...it was because of this they became the most hated people in school...and the music just promoted it all...Emo isn't just music...it's a whole...'way of life' if you will.
Although I didn't really give a crap, my friends had our own clique...the clique which everyone could be themselves and could come and go as they please...no pun intended.
With the shit that went on in my High School, looking back on it, I'm shocked that nothing ever happened...there were several kids in that school that could have gone ballistic at any given moment, I’m just glad that it didn’t.
Maybe that's why people hate emo, because it's so easy to hate.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/8/2007 8:45:53 PM | Because Emo sucks. I think that men getting onstage to scream about their ex's and then writhe on the floor crying need to have the living crap beat out of them. The WORST part is that the emo/screamo movement has infected the "pop" metal scene to the degree that emo is pretty much mainstream now. Its just sickening to any self respecting metalhead.
And FYI, I DO understand it. I also enjoy some bands deemed "emo" by the mainstream....IE Brighteyes, Elliot Smith, etc. However that doesn't mean that I consider the scene itself to be anything more than a bunch of pathetically malnourished weakling males that can't even bring themselves to embrace their masculinity. Crying about your pain constantly isn't strength, get over it.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/8/2007 10:24:35 PM | For a long time I had no idea what EMO was, but from my understanding this genre of music has been around for a very long time. Also, from what I know some have said it's so called depressing to listen to.
Also, a lot of it has been recycled from other bands of the past from my understanding so many claim it's not original which is one reason why people dislike this genre. I don't see anything wrong with being influenced by another band/artist for the most part. As long as you create something different that can make it your own. I don't listen to this music so I can't really say I know anything about this genre of music. All I know it's become more of a fashion trend more than anything else.
However, the subject of depression and not knowing of who you are etc.(which is common to go through your teenage years) has been present long time before EMO. I mean has anyone listened to The Smiths for example? Gee...has anyone listened to Morrisey's lyrics? They can drive anyone to slit their wrists
From my understanding EMO stands for Emotional. I thought music was supposed to and meant to bring some kind of emotion in someone. Whether it's happiness, anger or sadness etc. If someone likes this genre of music so be it. Sometimes the so called depression etc. within the music can be a positive thing for them instead of a negative. It's all about perspective. It's a trend and will go back to the underground again soon enough till it resurfaces again in popularity like with all genres of music.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/8/2007 10:39:40 PM | It's just teenage angst--and some people never grow out of it. Emo is nothing new at all, so there's really no reason to hate it or love it. Most of us at one time or another have been angst-ridden. The music, the lyrics, the poetry, the style . . . it's all a little self-indulgent, saying, "No one understands me!"--while ironically trying to pretend that they don't want to be understood. It can get a little old, but I imagine most people have felt this way sometime in their lives. It's possible that some people hate it because it reminds them of themselves when they were going through a difficult time in their lives. That's my take on it anyway. | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/9/2007 11:33:13 AM | But Emo allows one to be ones self, and the wrist cutters looking for attention are shunned by the real Emo community. Has anyone here who's put down the scene actually met an Emo? There some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, often randomly hugging you or will play spin the bottle with you ^_^ Theres even an Emo dance known as the Shuffle which is quite fun. I know this is off topic but I think Grudge will make a come back, Nirvana just sounds too damn good for people to not try to copy them. I suspect Grudge will be melded with another genre. (Note: Both Emo and Grudge are derived from Hardcore punk, Both Guy Piccioto of Rites of Spring and Kurt Cobain of Nirvana despised there respective labels, prefering "Punk" As both bands where influenced by Black Flag, if one listens to "Spank Thru" on Nirvana Silver it sounds ALOT like Emo, complete with the relationship themes, screaming, and melodic learics, so I guess Kurt was Emo at one point ) | |

But Emo allows one to be ones self
You can be yourself without emo as well. If you have to depend on some outside influence to "allow yourself to be yourself," then you have bigger problems than wondering why some people dislike emo. You are more than the music you listen to or the clothes you wear or even the emotions you display. Now don't ask me exactly what self-indentity is because I can't tell ya', but I know self-identity is more than what emo or any other pop culture occurence can give you. Do you relate to it? Sure! But don't fool yourself! It is funny that even emo addresses the issue of indentity and expression, but I don't think any emo artists would really suggest that you use them as examples as a way to define yourself.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/9/2007 2:52:28 PM | i don't mind if people hate emo, but if you're going to put so much energy into hating one genre and style, you HAVE to hate gangsters as well, and country folk, and punk rockers, and ravers. if you really HATE one genre and style of music and culture, then it's mandatory that you hate the rest or at least a couple other very noticeable and popular styles, which would be Gansters and Rockers.
all's Emo is is a certain dress, and hairstyle, and music genre.
it's no different than gangsters and thug rap. it's all style and music genre.
BTW, i'm not emo. some people seem to think i am because of my hairstyle? but i certainly am not emo.

I'm saying the music, the scene, and the effect it has on how metal is perceived by the "norms" is less than thrilling. Just go cry in a corner and be angst ridden with your primadonna wanna be gothbutgothissooutoffashion friends.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/9/2007 3:19:45 PM | ender, emo has no effect on metal.
metal is its own category, and its own style.
do you hate punks, goths and rocker as much as emos?

Bands like Senses Fail and thier ilk have been the frontrunners in the "new" metal movement accepted by popular society, and they are damn sure members of the screamo subculture. Which in turn evolved out of the emo subculture.
And I don't dislike individuals, I dislike the scene and what it does the perception of the metal subculture.
Punks - Anscesotrs of just about every "rock" oriented musical subculture today.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/9/2007 6:03:41 PM | | Alphapunk I think you meant to say, Grunge NOT Grudge which is something I grew up with plus lived through the first time around when Nirvana plus other bands that appeared into the spotlight back in the 90's. Like I mentioned above EMO has been around for a very long time. Also, like I mentioned above it is ok to be influenced by another band or artist BUT please do not try to sound like exactly like the band/artist you're influenced by. Try and create something that is your own. Create your own sound. This is what most people seem to have trouble with EMO that a lot of these bands do not create their own sound in order to evolve. | |

Emo sucks.
Period.
Get over it.
I don't care what you say.

all's Emo is is a certain dress, and hairstyle
I woulda stopped there....there's so much crap the record companies pass off as music when it's more in line with a fashion statement....and lacks creativity....but hey...kids get sucked into trends and all that nail polish, eyeliner, and hair products really help to push those discs off the shelves......
....how the hell can these guys be singing about girls when they look like that....
