| Adjusted to 3 positions Posted: 5/16/2007 2:37:10 AM | Mechanical watch movements in higher grade watches are adjusted for accuracy in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or even more positions. Ok I understand that.
But I just spent a couple of hours determining one of my disk drives only works in 3 out of 4 possible positions. OF COURSE the one it won't work is the one that's "normal". I had to mount it upside down in the case to get it to work. This is 100% repeatable.
Has anybody ever seen this?

Point is though, if a drive fails, try it in another position. It may at least work long enough to get the data off (if you're lucky).

have spent a few time willing & praying to the magnetic data fairies to read that data one last time.

Therefore, it's you who's at fault - you should move.

I have another drive here that came with 9 others in a RAID array that made a noise like a car engine dying when powered up. LOUD and DISTURBING. I powered it off and noticed things are rattling inside the drive. Not a good sign. Something came undone in there.
