Mechanical watch movements in higher grade watches are adjusted for accuracy in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or even more positions. Ok I understand that.

But I just spent a couple of hours determining one of my disk drives only works in 3 out of 4 possible positions. OF COURSE the one it won't work is the one that's "normal". I had to mount it upside down in the case to get it to work. This is 100% repeatable.

Has anybody ever seen this?

Just ran a test on a couple of drives and counldn't get them to stop working.... Sounds like a mechanical problem in the drive.

Drives are supposed to work in any position. I wouldn't expect any drive to not work in some weird position. Point is though, if a drive fails, try it in another position. It may at least work long enough to get the data off (if you're lucky).

yep have come across that before.
Thats the thing with harddrives. The general rule is always assume they will fail.

have spent a few time willing & praying to the magnetic data fairies to read that data one last time.

The drive isn't at fault. You'll probably find that the drive was manufactured on the opposite side of the world from you, so if you went back to where it was made it'd probably work the correct way.

Therefore, it's you who's at fault - you should move.

That makes as much sense as anything else. I'm assuming the heads aren't landing or loading correctly or something.

I have another drive here that came with 9 others in a RAID array that made a noise like a car engine dying when powered up. LOUD and DISTURBING. I powered it off and noticed things are rattling inside the drive. Not a good sign. Something came undone in there.

Remember all of the rush job PS1's withe the loose lense-assembly? Had to toss in a disc and flip the unit upsidedown for it to read.

I have seen the same error on a couple of IBM DeskStar units... albeit not for many many years now!
