| Forum Quotes Posted: 5/20/2007 10:30:16 PM | Often when I read one poster quoting another, I try to go back to the original posting to read the quoted material in its entirety and context. This is relatively easy to do on a short thread.
However, this can be quite difficult to do, even if the quoter identifies the quotee by name, once the thread gets to be more than a page (25 postings) or two long--especially when some individual posts on those pages can be the equivalent of a page or more, and the quoted post may be two posts prior, or ten pages prior--or more. Sometimes the name has already changed, leading to confusion; other times sheer volume of postings make it a daunting task. Sometimes confusion occurs because a quoted post has been deleted or edited for one reason or another before I read the thread. But that's another matter....
I intend to do my part in alleviating this annoyance (if, indeed, I am not the only one to view it as such) in the future by not only referencing what POF member, but also the msg. # I am quoting.

After all, to quote someone's post, we must go to that particular message to accurately quote them. How much more trouble is it to definitively attribute the quote? A few seconds at most. Useful also for any time we comment on or have a question about a specific prior posting.

msg.1 What are your thoughts? I think it's a great idea, hope it's picked up by everyone on here. I'll refrain from adding the posters name though, easy enough to see when going to the message.
Now, ruckus123, here's a link that should show you what you're missing. I believe there's also a practice thread just for this purpose? You'll find many here that write their posts in a separate browser when they are quoting more than one post. If, after reading this, you still have any questions? Feel free to write to me, I'll gladly help you or any other POF'er out.

I agree that that's usually the case. I suggested using the name also because I have run into threads where one or more posts were removed by the mods for offensive content or some other rule-breaking and the remaining posts were renumbered. I was able to find most of the posts I was looking for by searching the nearby posts by name. Of course, if the name and the numbering have both changed, I'm usually SOL.
I don't know why sometimes the numbering changes when posts are removed and sometimes it remains the same, just with a gap. Personally, when a post is removed by the mods, I would prefer the person's name to remain and numbers stay the same--just replace the offending message with the reason it was deleted, e.g., Removed for flaming, broadcasting, off-topic, etc. I've made that suggestion in the suggestions/help forum in the past, but didn't get a response.

PG77, msg 5 Thanks for the responses. Yeah, all two of them considering ruckus has yet to learn how to quote here. He's been active in the forums, guess he just hasn't checked back in here yet.
Again, you bring up a valid point about renumbered posts, one I was remiss in considering. Bad poster bad bad bad I say But would either name or post number help under that situation? What was quoted would not match with what was now there, nor the name. Sorry, I see your SOL comment now, which means I do like your suggestion about leaving the post numbers in order, at least someone would know there used to be something there before what they see now.
Anyway, I see POF trying real hard to keep ahead as far as being user friendly, listening to the populous/membership, trying new things while continuing to steadily grow. The time lapse between reporting a forum violation and site action still seems too great but, free or not, it's still the best dating site I have ever found.

We are certainly in total agreement here! And these forums are a big reason why I think so. Entertaining, informative, and fun. And the vast majority of posters are friendly, civil people who can agree to disagree when appropriate!
