I was under the impression, that the military in the US, would not discharge a person for being gay.

The rule is "Don't ask, don't tell."

In other words, if he didn't do anything that would cause concern, the mere fact of his sexual orientation is not an issue.

Hummmmm? In the Navy we have saying, don't care how many times you've had discharge, as long as you have it cleared up by the time we get to port.

(JK)....LOL really I am.....Sorry...

The policy is that "they" will not go around looking for homosexuals, but if somebody is identified as such, they will be kicked out of the military.

He was not discharged for being gay he was discharged for acting on it. Hetero's also are not allowed to act on it. As a military person you are not to act out sexually with another person there has always been gays in uniform there is only one way for a person to know a persons sexuallity.

Quite right we had a gay storekeeper on my second ship who was a flamer. He carried a purse and generally made a spectacle of himself but he bothered nobody, and as far as I know is still on active duty doing his job very well.

However we also had a fag who forced himself on somebody who worked for him and was busted for sodomy, harassment and maybe rape. We also had straight sailors busted for adultery and harassment.

Being gay in the military isn't punishable, when you cause problems because of it that's when it's wrong. Being straight and causing problems is also punishable under the UCMJ, there are very stringent rules for fraternization and harassment, far more stringent than for being gay.

In my 25 years of experience in the military far more people use the excuse of being gay to get out of military service than are actually gay and discharged. The member who was discharged twice was either a gay activist out to break the system or a malingerer out to break his contract.

thyme:

You are absolutely correct on people within the military doing as such, at least in my day. We were laffin one time at a guy who was in our unit during the war which I was in, he wanted to go back home so bad...that he walked into the officers tent and told the commander of all the sexual things he would like to do to him....keep in mind,,this guy was STRAIGHT!!!! The commander just laffed at him and made him leave lol That particular guy finished the deployment with all of us and of course with he being made fun of constantly in the shower, that is when we could get showers.

I also know of a guy who was so desperate to get out of the military..he told the commander and first sergeant that he pees the bed!!! I'm sorry..I'm still laffin at that one.

Don't ask don't tell means you do not tell people of your sexual orientation. If you do, then you are subjected to being discharged due to homosexuality. Same with lesbians. I personally never had a problem with serving with gay people, some were great soldiers and I would trust them anyday to watch my back. The fact is, it's in the UCMJ that one can not openly show their sexuality if they are gay. This is better than what the military use to do. Upon in processing through meps...I still remember the question..."Have you ever engaged in any homosexual acts"? My smartass reply was..."Drunk or sober"? The doctor laffed and ignored my reply. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong any prior military or current military...but isn't there a specific chapter where sexual activity during war time is prohibited? Yes..I know no one follows it, but I do believe it's in the military regulations. Correct me if I"m wrong though. :)

You'd think as hard up as they are to get people to go get maimed and mutilated ... they would just take anyone.

What always makes me wonder (and laugh as well) ... why are men so freaked out about having a gay man in their ranks? What the hell are they so afraid of?

I don't think I've ever seen any woman get freaked out about having a gay woman around ... not in any way the way men get freaked out.

I am not sure but the 4:7 males being sexually abused before the age of 21 (update stat if you have it please) is why I think they fear them what they need to know is that the folk who do that are sick (wo)men not all gay people are like that.

"vvendy" ... here's something I found but do not know when it was written ... I simply could not find a date on it, but it appears to be rather recent.

http://www.oprah.com/article/omagazine/200810_omag_sexual_abuse/1
A survey by researchers at the University of Massachusetts–Boston suggests that approximately one in six men is sexually abused before the age of 16.

Being a woman, I simply can't imagine what a man is feeling when encountering a gay man. I find gay men absolutely harmless, but apparently men do not. So I went looking and found this which I thought was interesting ...
http://askville.amazon.com/straight-men-hate-gay/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=5846879
"Why do so many straight men hate gay men?"

Most straight men I meet who hate/dislike gay men feel that way because they are afraid they, themselves, might be gay since it's perfectly normal to have sexual thoughts and feelings about the same sex, but they've been raised to believe it's wrong and should be squelched. They dislike gay men because to them, they are acting 'weak' giving in to those urges. But in reality, it's themselves they dislike, and their own, misunderstood, attraction to some men.

To further complicate matters, many people operate under the mistaken assumption that being gay is all about sex and nothing else. Many people don't understand the same love they feel for their hetero spouse is felt by those who are in gay relationships. So to add to the fear these types of men are sure every gay man within eyeshot is lusting after him and planning out how to take him down and rape him. When in reality most gay men are not attracted to straight men and are thinking nothing of the sort.

Thankfully, I no longer have such people in my life. I refuse to associate with anyone who is a racist or homophobe.

I recall a while back having a conversation with a man who was career Army and asked him what the problem is with having a gay guy in the armed services. He simply said he personally was concerned about being hit on. So I asked him if he had preferences that he looked for in women and he said, "Of course." Then I asked him if a woman who didn't fit those preferences would appeal to him. He said, "No."

That's when I told him the same thing the man said in the above article. "Gay men really don't just see all men as as a butt-hole to bang. They really are only drawn to other gay men. They would not randomly hit on straight men, neither in the barracks nor out on the battlefield." He said he never saw it that way.

I honestly do believe I enlightened him about it.

All people should bond with a group of people their age and sex unless they are being raised not to see sex. Sex is a matter of body parts but if the parts are never addressed a person is free to develope without the confines of social mores on gender identity. To me anti bias curriculuum should be introduced from start to finish.

I was raised not thinking of myself as agirl but as a person who loved to hunt run jump read/watch action comics and fight. When I saw Jackie Chan with his shirt off and said "Wow he's handsom. Can I have his picture mom" my mom and I had a talk about what made him handsome to me and she confirmed that I was going to be a woman soon. I was lucky number 7 and dressed in my brother's hand me downs the topic sex does not come up and every boy I played with just assumed I was one of them until 4th grade. You should have seen the eyes I looked like jessica rabbit most of my guy friends could not handle it. The girls were wrost.

I loved the Millitary because you stop being a girl and are back to a state of being. It is not about who is dating what it is about can I trust you to do your job with out letting some ones looks or your feelings get in the way.

I feel sorry for girls and unacceptable guys who ask me out or want me and never know what to say and feel wierd near them from that piont on and I am sure that is the same for guys. 1 in 6 is a big improvement still too high 1 in 6^99 is too high.
