| Is anyone out there Scottish? Posted: 5/24/2007 7:50:32 PM | If there is, do you know what men wear under their kilts? I have been dying to know for sure. Does anyone know?
I think they wear nothing under them and that is why they wear the little bag in front.
Can someone help me out here?

I happen to have a Utilikilt, which has big pockets. I don't wear it with a sporran, I wear it with a belt, and pretty much only when I'm going to be getting together with other friends who are wearing them too.
For things like weddings, I will wear black underwear, as the kilt I have is solid black.
On a warm summer day? Well, as I've seen it said on the utilikilt.com website, the boys do enjoy it when they catch a breeze. It feels... weird, and strangely liberating.

| Is anyone out there Scottish? Posted: 5/24/2007 9:27:18 PM | I love a man in a kilt...especially the burly ones!...men, not kilts. Oh the slender ones look good too...oh, heck...I love a man in a kilt!
I personally own a picture of a guy at one of the higland games tossing a small boulder...one of the games they do. He's got a great twirl goin on and his kilt looks like a tootoo (or however they spell it). He has on blue tighties.
I also know of a song that talks about a guy lifting his kilt to pee after a drunk and finds a yellow ribbon...the song goes on to say he "musta won first prize"

| Is anyone out there Scottish? Posted: 5/24/2007 11:03:45 PM | The first time I went to Edinburgh we were walking up towards the castle and there was a wedding party coming out of a beautiful church...the men were in kilts and it was stunning. I know that's an odd word, but to see it in such a beautiful city at such a lovely event...it was stunning. Of course, up the street there was a Braveheart character passing out tickets to a ghost tour, but I remember the wedding party more than anything.
If anyone gets the chance...go to Edinburgh for New Years (Hogomanay sp?)...it's a fabulous time and the city is absolutely incredible!!

They wear kilts so the sheep won't hear a zipper being pulled down behind them. Alot of my people are from Scotland long ago. I like a man in a kilt and love the bagpipes, maybe even his bagpipe, heh heh.

| Is anyone out there Scottish? Posted: 5/25/2007 1:15:27 PM | My uncle always had an answer to the question from ladies as to what was worn under the kilt. He would say, with a twinkle in his eye, "I'm a man of few words. Take my hand", gently hold her hand, and start to guide it to the bottom of his kilt. She would invariably yank her hand away and blush. I don't know what he would have done if she hadn't.
I first wore the kilt when my cousin got married and he wanted me to be a groomman with his brother, father, and uncle. My uncle had a spare set, so they set me up with the whole regalia. It felt exactly right. I stood there looking at my uncles and cousins, and said "Let's go to a bar and kick some @ss". We were a tough, good-looking bunch of Scots.
One more story. Once my uncle was attending the Highland Festival in Estes Park, Colorado with me. We had gone out to look for elk in their mating ritual, and came back to attend the night's festivities. We had little time, so we went to McDonald's (of course). We were in full kit, and some teen boys were there who obviously didn't know about the Scottish activities. They were nudging each other and laughing. My uncle didn't bat an eye. He just reached down to his stocking and brought out his skean dubh. His little knife is about 6 inches of blade with a horn grip and looks fierce. He just started cleaning his fingernails and smiled at them. They shut up and looked away. He was 75 then.
Uncle Don has a wicked, delightful sense of humor. It takes a real man to wear a kilt.

| Is anyone out there Scottish? Posted: 5/27/2007 3:02:30 PM | The kilt is a British military garment, derived from the plaid. The plaid is about seven yards of a woollen blanket wrapped around a person and fastened with a belt. The female version, the Arisaig, comes over both shoulders and is affixed with a brooch. The underwear thing, or lack thereof, is another military stipulation. For those of us who know our culture longer than what happened last Tuesday, the whole kilt/tartan thing is for the tourists and mad people in the penal colonies who dress up for Highland Games in a land subjugated by the aforementioned British Military and the burgeoning Empire. A lot of rubbish is spoken about Scotland and a lot of it is on this thread. Mind you, if my country had high culture the equivalent of warthogs wrestling in dung, then I might be inclined to cling to some notion of ancestry and something more civilised. Have a nice day y'all.

| Is anyone out there Scottish? Posted: 5/27/2007 7:09:20 PM | Have, I laughed out loud! You sound just like my ex-husband, Mr. MacGregor.
Although I was a MacGregor for 12 years, I never saw him in a kilt. The MacGregor tarton isn't an easy one to find (I believe because they were such a bad clan). I did make a pleated skirt of the tartan for myself while I was married and it always is worn with a kind of sash over the shoulders.
When my youngest daughter married recently, she wore my bright red MacGregor tartan sash over her one shoulder, pinned to her wedding gown. It was stunning. She was piped down the aisle by a piper (wow is that a loud sound inside a church!)
Then, when the ceremony was over, she and her new husband started their walk up the aisle and stopped at the first row where my ex and I were seated and my ex removed the tartan from her shoulder.
I thought it was a great gesture to my daughter's heritage. And a great symbol of a new phase of her life starting.

The Wicked Captain, please, do not be offended. There is another tread where I wrote I am very much looking for a Scottish lady... So you know how much respect I have for your country.

| Is anyone out there Scottish? Posted: 5/27/2007 8:26:07 PM | This was an interesting thread to read. But, wicked captain, when I was reading about the people dressing up for the Highland Games I almost choked on my cuppa tea when I misread 'penal colony.' Then when I re-read it, I cursed my bifocals because I was wrong! (Gee, I kinda liked the mental image when I read it the first time around, it was totally wrong...heh, heh, heh....)
Marcia, that was super about your daughter's wedding. How touching that she included that gesture in her ceremony!

FWIW, the lady Herself will be in Fergus ON for the Highland Games. A great place to look for MIKs (Men in Kilts) - I plan on being an official kilt inspector.
Regimental, my man, regimental!! (and that means "sans undies!") Woo hoo!!
