| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/26/2007 7:25:30 PM | I am learning how to hula-hoop again (who would think you could forget how) for an upcoming party. Anyway........is there any benefits from it? I mean.......what muscles do you actually use and could it possibly be a fun way to lose weight? | |

| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/26/2007 7:29:07 PM | | Oh my God, I'm not sure if theres any benefits but I happen to have one (brand new) for the grand kids. I'll do it now and let you know. | |

| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/26/2007 8:36:31 PM | | Do it for about 30 minutes, and the next morning, let us know which muscles ache. If you're sweating at the end of those 30 minutes, that will give us a better indication of how well it worked too. | |

| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/27/2007 8:00:10 AM | Hula hoops can be great exercise for abs/lower back (if you do the regular on-the-waist hooping)... and great for spine mobility... they can also strengthen arms... you can use them on your neck....
I have a number of "sport" hoops in my gym and clients love them--a few have bought their own (check out http://www.sports-hoop.com/service_canadabuyer.html) and if you google "hula hoops" you'll find all sorts of sites that offer different exercises you can try.
...I just got back from doing the Relay for Life where I let people try some hoops and also made a glow-in-the-dark hoop from pvc tubing and glow sticks! Very fun!

| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/27/2007 8:04:38 AM | I'm sure it could be considered "cardio" to a point, however, as with any type of cardio, the more you do it, the more efficient your body becomes at doing it so you would have to vary the intensity or do it for longer and longer periods of time.
Whether or not your muscles ache, isn't a sign of anything other then your body getting used to something different. It's not an indicator of a good workout.

I wouldn't call it cardio--I've done it for long periods of time and you can do it fast with some velocity and it can be challenging, but doesn't increase your heart rate significantly.

| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/27/2007 9:04:41 AM | | Give up the hula hoop and grab a skipping rope. Try to do some of Mayweathers skipping workouts, now THAT is cardio... | |

I'm sure you can agree that the speed of YOUR heart rate doesn't represent everyone's. If someone is significantly out of shape, it could be cardio - and that's what I meant when I said "could" and "to a point".
I agree with Anti-Hero that jumping rope is a much better option.

| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/27/2007 10:59:42 AM | | the time you spend standing in a circle twirling a ring around your wast could be better spent if you're looking to lose weight. | |
|
| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/27/2007 11:38:26 AM | I'm doubting anyone here is keeping up with the worlds best P-4-P boxer in the world. Sometimes we have to set our standards a little lower, like with a hula hoop.
....mainly because jump roping is no joke.

No one thing is "the" thing--I use skipping ropes, I run, I bike, I swim, I lift weights, I do yoga... everything has a place and time. Hula hoops are FUN and a good ab workout--and if you interest people in doing something they enjoy doing then that's great! Cross-training is the best option!
agree that the speed of YOUR heart rate doesn't
That's true... but a lot of my clients have used them as well and I pay attention to the effects on them. I also use weighted hoops that most beginners can't do for more than a few minutes at a time--great core workout.

| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/27/2007 11:51:34 AM | or you know... HIIT.
Get over yourself and jump in a lake--for FUN. Working out doesn't have to be all serious-every-minute-make-it-count activity. There's a time for HIIT and a time for frisbees and hula-hoops.
Lighten up!
...also you'll notice the OP said she's learning for an upcoming "party"... see? FUN!

| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/27/2007 11:55:56 AM | I agree completely, infact yesterday my work out was playing some makeshift full contact version of water polo at the pool.
I'm just saying if people are looking to lose weight... you gotta bite the bullet and do it properly... you can't keep eating crap food and go to the dollar store and buy a hoola hoop.

Yeah, I'll say it again, the OP is learning for a PARTY.

| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/27/2007 1:04:36 PM | | According to my Cardio Kickboxing instructor you can burn up to 300 calories per hour with the hula hoop. We have a day called boot camp where it is just one station of many and you rotate every two minutes. For me it's good exercise because I'm bending over and picking it up every two seconds. lol | |

| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/27/2007 2:06:26 PM | offthewheel: Thank you, for your advice and for understanding what I was looking for. Now I am sitting here wondering........did they check out my profile and decided I really needed some weight loss help?
While practicing for a Hawaiian themed party, which will have a hula hoop contest, I couldn't help but wonder if I was actually doing any good. (not with the hula-hoop...........the damn thing still keeps falling to the floor, must be defective)
Thanks for all the input.

I never said anyone here could keep up, all I said is tr his skipping workouts. Im not saying anyone should be the next mayweather, thats for sure.
Hoola Hoops wont get you anywhere. That is a fact.

I was wondering if they'd checked out mine! I'm a personal trainer btw and I've always felt that the best thing I can do for people is to help them find things they enjoy doing so they'll see fitness as fun and not a chore--and it usually encourages them to try other things and stay active.

Well, while the rest are at the gym doing deadlifts or something, I'll ignore them and tell you the secret is to have one foot in front of the other and don't attempt to follow the motion of the hoop (circular)... it's a back/forth thing with the hips... which is great for abs!
Hope that helps! And have fun! Hope you win!

Lack of coordination. Practice can fix that.

| Serious question about hula-hoops Posted: 5/27/2007 11:11:18 PM | jumping rope would be a better way to lose weight than a hula hoop.
Hula hoop is for having fun, not thinking of it as exercise.

Not everyone needs or wants to lose weight! Some people like to do it for FUN!
