I would like to find out how many would consider dropping out of life as we know it for a couple years and take a sailboat trip around the world with young kids. Boat schooling and all. I've thought about doing this, but also still want to have kids. I just wonder how adventurous is the average person. A simple yeah or neah answer or comments explaining your thoughts are welcome.

Yeah, Alaska is good that's where my picture is taken on top of Mt Thunderbird north of Eagle River. I could do that too. Thanks,

Well, I worked in tech for years and then made a killing during the Internet boom.

I then decided to drop out and re-embrace my earlier hippy roots from Berk as a student.

I carefully invested the money and set up a trust to maintain the farm community that I started along with several people I love.

Now, I'm 63 and healthy and very happy living this simple lifestyle. I have two great women that I co-habitat with and have 8 children with a ninth on the way. We eschew most modern conveniences and this computer is our only piece of modern tech.

I realize that this isn't the same as your situation, but I think you have a similar attitude as myself.

Drop-out for a while and enjoy this "Big Blue Marble".

I know that I've never been happier and more content.

However, it'd probably be difficult to sustain a boat-bound existence with children, unless you had a VERY large boat.

Still, if you can pull it off, then go for it.

Peace and love

Yeah a 40 foot boat would be about minimum for such an excursion. Thanks for the input. What do you do about your kids and school? You can mail direct if you don't want to post here. Have a great day.

I don't mind discussing my life or lifestyle.

We may be a bunch of hippies now, but most of us are well educated and had fancy careers before we dropped out.

Me, I've got a Ph.D from Berk. I even taught college for time.

We've got a lawyer, two doctors, two other tech guys, a former school teacher, a former highway patrolperson, and a marketing executive.

You get the idea.

The kids are "home-schooled" and I've put my two oldest through college. We make sure that we keep our children's education up-to-date, because even though we don't embrace it all, it's all still out there and we want the children to not be blind-sided. We do teach all of the children together and encourage intelligent debates. Of course, they all study at different rates, but it's worked out fairly well. We encourage the children to also pursue things that especially interest them, as well as teaching basics. We make sure that we meet any necessary requirements, so as to not have our lives disrupted by the government.

We make it clear that although we hope that the children will embrace our lifestyle, we'll understand if something else appeals to them. So, we don't censor ANYTHING in their learning. That's the big difference between our home-schooling and many others.

We believe in books and encourage reading. We avoid technology, but we do make use of our one computer for research, communication, etc.

All in all, it's not too bad. All the children in our extended family are intelligent and articulate. To my eyes, they are surprisingly well-adjusted. So, it seems to work.

I'm not saying that it's always easy, but it is ALWAYS worth it.

Oh, an advantage we have is that we have more adults than children, so we all take turns teaching, so it's not a big burden on us.

You would probably just have you and a mate to teach children. So, that add a new dimension of difficulty.

Still, it'd be an adventure.

The skeptic is my bloody hero. That's the retirement I wish to live, two women, lots of Jimi Hendrix and daily DMT trips.

I'm being serious.

Thanks
I enjoy teaching having done it my entire life. And I'm a very rounded person, could teach anything. Books are the key, for me it would just start at a couple years, so not a big deal. I would expect kids raised in your enviroment should experience the outside world and would probably want to when they grow up, but would not be surprized if they come back to the fold later. I'm sure I would fit in at your place no problem. Have a great day.

Jheld:
You're already sailing so you should have found all the sailing mags with discussions about raising kids on a boat. People seem to do it every which way - from starting a family on a 25 footer. There are tons of resources for home schooling on the web. Radio, Iridium or cafes for internet access. Most people seem to think its a great life for kids.

Yeah I'm not really wanting a how to here, more a test the waters to see if I think It possible to find anybody else that would want to do it. Sometimes what I think has nothing to do with reality. I still have to find the women to have the kids, so that's closer to what this is all about. Thanks

I'm thinking about teaching a year on the Navajo Nation. I think it is a great idea, and if you don't meet that special woman to share the journey you never know what you might find along the way. My gratitude goes out to everyone like you, now it is time for me to do something similar myself after one last midlife crisis summer in Wyoming. Happy Sails, or Trails, wherever you go friend!

Before my daughter started school we travelled around Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, Montana, took a trip out to Las Vegas for awhile. It was great fun and we created an incredible bond. I would love to go on several year long boat trip, but I don't think that my daughter could handle being away from people that long.

I am waiting until she grows up, then I'm going back to living in campsites and under signs along the highway. That's what I did for eight years before she was born, and those where the happiest days of my life. I'm a born drifter, but I must plant my boots for the sake of creating a stable home while my little girl goes to school.

Haha - emailed her your profile and a pic - the sailor one, of course! Email address still good?
Now I wanna know about the contraption you had for hauling that fuel behind your bike. - I guess it still counts as the thread since I'm planning on sailing around the world soon.

@Doublecabin: I have a picture of a moose about that close, my opinion it was my closest brush with death. I was backpacking in the woods in the Never Summer Wilderness west of Estes, by myself in late October. I heard a noise looked up and there was a 1200 pound bull moose about 15 feet away. I could see in his eyes he didn't appreciate my proximity. I took a couple more steps to put a tree between me and him, that made me feel about 2% better, I took out my Olympus XA camera from a belt hip pouch, and snapped a picture without raising the camera. Basically I was documenting for the rangers what had macerated me into the ground. As if there would be much question. I then backed my ass the hell out of there. It was Rut, he had a female up behind him and the female had a yearling up behind her, amazing got all three in the pic, XA's have a wide angle lens. I also have a similar bear story from Alaska, but never actually saw the bear, just the tracks heading toward me on the trail on a slightly rainy day and no raindrops in the tracks. Oh Shit!!!! I never was one that could walk alone making noise or wear bear bells. Still don't

It's made out of a high speed baby carriage, thriftshop item, those jogging things. It folds up has been modified with a couple drilled holes and some pieces removed, such a seat and a couple braces. Two 2x4's found floating in the water act as can holder and tongue. The cans are WallMart, no vent to leak and 2x4 fits handle well. A few straps to tie everything together, and act as a hitch around the seat post and a couple holes in the end of the tongue 2x4 to take bolts and it's done. 3 full cans is about 100 pounds, it pulls great and tracks well, saves a bunch every time I fill up.

The bicycle is also a home made folder, cut in half and put together with a couple cross drilled tubes and 4 bolts with wing niuts, back derailer shifter moved to back half of frame under seat and front derailer removed, hand operated by lifting the chain. Back brake lever on top tube back half of frame, not a good idea for panic stops, need some type of a cable disconect for it to leave it on the handle bar. Again works great. Cost $15

^^^^Hey, you know how to tell if it's Grizzly Scat don't you? It has pepper spray and bells in it.

It's a little black bear, mid sized moose. Ah, Lone Eagle Peak, The Mummy, great stuff. I'll say hi to Mt. Meeker and Longs Peak for you in a week as I head up to Wyoming. I just got a digital from a buddy, kind of psyched for this spring/summer.

@Doublecabin: Stop in at Saratoga Hot Springs, if you never been there, I camp about 5 miles north of town just north west of a bridge across the North Plate, good camp site and easy access to town and the springs. A few years ago one of the local racnchers brought in Bobby Bear for a free concert in town. Good stop on the way to Yellowstone and Wind River Area. Ever driven Crazy Woman Creek road near Buffalo, south of Sheridan? Have fun with the new camera, I'm holding out for a professional digital.

I have two good friends sailing around the world right now. No kids, but they are just having an amazing time doing it. One right now is off the coast of Australia(Brisbane) and the other is just off the coast of Panama.
I know of others who have done it with kids and they say they would do it again in a heartbeat with the kids, there is no school out there that can teach a life leason like exploring the world on 100 sqft :)
