Hi folks,

If you have read some of my threads, Meccano gets mentioned. I do it as a hobby.
For our American friends you would have known it as Erector.
I'm in 10 clubs in 4 countries. I'm secretary and editor of the newsletter of one of the clubs.

Did any of you ever do it in the past or present?
What set did you have?
Did you have a brother or know anyone who did it?
What memories do you have?

My brother had a huge tub of it when he was a kid and would spend hours making things with it. Caused mayhem in our house though when the smaller pieces and the nuts got sucked up and then knackered the hoover!

I did have a bit of the cheap plastic stuff , but was more lego lego lego.

The plastic set I had was ok until you over tightened the nut & sheared the bolts

Yes, I've seen those plastic bits. Only useful for decoration purposes. Some nice new metal bits out too.

Meccano got me started on the track to being an engineer. My father bought me one of the new digital (red) watches when they first came out, they were really expensive then, he was in a foul mood when i swapped it for meccano. I didn't have sets, or rather I never kept it in sets, I used parts of various sets to build different things

Exactly the same for me. I put all of my sets together to make one big one (including a number 10 set). I have 300 kg now.

My mother could swap stories with you

If you want to sell it, let me know what you have and I'll tell you what it is worth. You won't get ripped off then.

We have a bit of a joke in the clubs about uttereing the dreaded "L" word. Several times I've had kids come up to me at exhibitions and say it. "Excuse me, will you keep your child under control?". "Why what has he done". "Uttered the 'L' word". "LEGO!". "Told you!".

If you want to know more about what I do, please type in "Dave Bradley Meccano" on the websearch and you will see what I do. I know it's not everybody's cup of tea (I hate gardening), but so many people know what it is.
Thank you for your responses.

me and my brother used to build railway bridges with it, and purposley never tightened the little bolts, so when the train went over it, it all collapsed ... ohhh yeah, that was fun and we used to lie bits of metal on the tracks and crash the trains and and we used to get plastic soldiers and tie some cotton round their necks and dangle them off the railway bridge so the train would decappatate them BAHAHAHaha and and and we used to purposely park police cars on the track so the train would smash em up to pieces and and and and ....

We had my dad's metal meccano - mainly used by my brother to build all sorts of machines, I liked my dolls and fairy stories. My brother's father-in-law has it all now to play with my 9 year old nephew and my 7 year old niece although she prefers it pink to make space rockets and camper vans. I wonder if he will refurbish some of it pink not the original racing green and pillar box red...?

My son loved it, although I hated standing on the bits that hadn't been picked up! Grrrrr.... On saying that though, standing on Lego hurts more! Seriously though, both Meccano and Lego have been my saviour on a rainy day....!

heh heh! Just got my son some "real" metal meccano from the charity shop. It's a lot better than the modern plastic stuff.

Tenuously on topic, but as a child my nick name was 'Meccano', as this bloke could not pronounce my surname, Maclaren, and called me Meccano instead.
On topic entirely though, I had a Crane and a JCB, but I spent a lot more time playing with my train set. Until I discovered women and beer of course!

My brother used to have a couple of sets when we were growing up and on a rare occassion would let me play with it.

I think that may have been the start of my fascination for tools, back then I started taking things apart to see how they worked, then spent ages putting them back together again!!

I was a Lego boy (not literally), but I did have few bits and pieces of Meccano.

Stuff like Lego and Meccano were and still are fantastic tool's for kids to use to bring out their creative impulses and they can be passed down from generation to generation (once you have emptied the hoover), till one generation has enough pieces to build a house to live in or a full size working car... I wonder if anyone has ever done that?... I guess it would be pretty hard actually getting the council to agree for planning permission to build an extension out of Lego or Meccano.

And how many little boys get their faces slapped for asking little girls to come round and play with their Erector ? (And how many not so little boys too )

My 5yr old son got brought a box of the new style meccano for Christmas, its rubbish.
Linear cheap plastic parts, that when constructed do not function properly, when constructed and played with all the plastic nuts and bolts become loose and it falls apart. A very poor imitation of the original.

The original Meccano was super stuff, my brothers had a small amount, as it was very expensive.

Lego was used far more in our house and was played with all the time.

Actually, my brothers Tonka toys were used to wipe out everything that we ever built.
