| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 6/5/2007 2:23:05 AM | I know it is reasonable to conclude that intelligence and brain size are not linked, but is wit linked to intelligence...
Is a 'quick - witted' person necessarily an intelligent one?

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 6/5/2007 2:57:58 AM | We all have 'intelligence' to some degree, or else we'd be cattle, sheep or ameoba - or whatever- but we don't all have the skill or ability of 'quick wittedness'.
That's like linking 'hunger' to filling your stomach via your nose.
Wit and it's skill at the art, are more a gift, and not linked or comparable to intelligence or intellect.
Some people are blissfully unaware they are witty, and they are a delight, and some people work really hard at perfecting the skill (professional comedians), and soem know they have the wit, and can produce it at will, spontaneously, when the occasion calls for it.
I love the play on words, and comic timing, and I love to make laugh and to be made to laugh by a few well chosen words.
I wonder where our 'sense of humour' lives in our brain, and does it have a 'funny bone'?

This really goes back to the old debate that ran recently about what intelligence is. Academic ability is just one form in my opinion. People with genuine wit are always intelligent, but maybe in a different way.
I've been racking my brains, but I can't think of anyone who I'd describe as witty and thick.

Is it acceptable thinking, given restless native's argument, to think wit and intelligence do go hand in hand ?
You cannot be witty without having an ounce of brains, and Einstein's brain was very large, huge in fact.

i would not say that natural intelligence like being able to absorb books and memorise would automatically make anyone witty, but nor indeed does it mean that they cant be witty, i believe upbringings can form a part of your humour, and i do feel we have always been able to laugh at our own misfortunes and thats what i like about the british humour

| Are Wit And Intelligence Related? Posted: 6/5/2007 4:53:03 AM | My answer is sometimes. For some I think it takes a certain type of intelligence to be witty, where they speedily weight up the situation and the audience before witticism delivery. For others it comes naturally and wit seems to be delivered with no visible effort.
ahh this fence is comfy today.

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 6/5/2007 4:55:17 AM | well .. yes.. i think they are related
there is a difference between wit and a sense of humour. (no i haven't checked in the dictionary i'm just making it up as i go .. but .. ) everyone has a sense of humour but not everyone has wit. i do know some very smart people who lack a sense of humour but do have a very dry wit. i also know some amazingly stupid people who lack wit but know how to have a good laugh.
keep your wits about you .... !

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 6/5/2007 5:02:59 AM | I know people who are intelligent ,some of those have wit and are funny without even trying and some do not.
I also know people who are not so intelligent and some of those have wit and some do not.
I do not believe that wit and intelligence go hand in hand,You are either a funny witty person or you are not .Also what someone sees as wit or being witty, someone else will not .

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 6/5/2007 5:14:25 AM | ok ... i went to the dictionary ....
wit; intelligence, understanding, sense, sagacity (!); the power of perceiving analogies and other relations between apparently incongruous ideas or of forming unexpected striking or ludicrous combinations of them; a person distinguished for this power; a witty person ....
it goes on a bit more but i think it's safe to say that according to my dictionary they are indeed linked !

I think combined wit and intelligence is a cultural thing and only the Irish and Chinese are capable of it really.

A person may have a high "IQ" but very little common sense, life experience, or social skills. As such, I'd say that they weren't hugely "intelligent" in my subjective sense of the word.
A person who is truly intelligent, is not only knowledgable and intellectual, but a good communicator with a sense of humour who has wit to go with his geekiness!

In Shakespearean language, a slang term for the penis or libido. 'Zounds! His wit hath failed to arouse his mistress. Lo!' I think I like this definition the best!!

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 6/5/2007 8:47:34 AM | I don't think you need to be really smart to be witty. But I think you do to be quick-witted. Often times a quip isn't funny if it's an hour late.
Moreso I think "intelligence" is just one metric of, for lack of a better word, brainpower.
There's intelligence, wisdom and sharpness, the latter being a measure of how "quick" somebody is.
I've heard some right thickies say some very funny and insightful things. But they have to think about it a bit. And I've known some people that were really intelligent that were also really stupid which is more a reflection of wisdom (or lack of) than the ability to do really well on intelligence tests.

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 6/5/2007 1:24:53 PM | MSG The two have to be related in some way.
'Wit' is the ability to respond in an appropriate manner (whatever the circumstances), and someone with little intelligence won't be able to do this as well as someone who is intelligent.

Is a 'quick - witted' person necessarily an intelligent one
Now do you want a humerous answer, or an intelligent one?
Is a half wit half as intelligent?

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 6/5/2007 3:46:47 PM | On the whole, I'd agree with msg 6, and say that I don't know anyone who is witty who is also thick.
But then I remembered an ex of mine, who had such a cracking personality cos of his charm and wit, and yet he was dead thick.
I definitely know many people who have academic intelligence, yet wouldn't know witty if it smacked them in the mouth.
