| European "Hot Dogs" Posted: 6/11/2007 6:49:27 PM | | So I was recently in Vienna and wanted to find a light snack for lunch. I ordered a "hot dog" at a fairly busy vendor wagon (right in the main square) and was given this baguette with some type of course meat smokey tasting dog (bratwurst?). Best thing I have eaten at a vendor in a long time! Does anyone know the type of dog that the Austrians may have been serving (it's cheaper asking than flying back to ask the vendor)? | |

I'm thinking it was more of a smoked suasage. Hard to tell what kind tho, theres so many variations that they make in that region...sorry I couldn't be of more help!

I've been obsessed with these. Scary obsessed. Not very productive at work, googling austrian street vendors with no success, no product I've found exists in NA (at least in steet cart form). Why?
Do you think I could convince a Bud swilling, NASCAR addicted, pickuptruckradiostuckoncountrymuscistation blue collar Joe to eat a Eurodog?
Prolly not....
But I would travel far and wide for another taste of one of these babies (cont. US, eastern Canada - have to pass on Sask.) if anyone knows an eatery serving up such an animal?

nontangent: I don't know what kind of delicatessan's you have in Maine, but I know here in Windsor, and bigger cities like Toronto, you can get all kinds of different European sausages made fresh daily, at certain European deli's. Of course, you'll have to cook them yourself, but at least you'd have them!

Good tip, Tee. Not sure if I have ever seen a European deli round here, but I will scoot down to Boston and sniff around some weekend. Just thought there might have been a national brand out there that meets the taste test - or is at least comparable.

I think now that the dollar is at an all time low our weiners don't really seem that big to them anymore...it's the bling, not the schwing (Section A23158 Subsection 2351 European Union Sizing Codes, Non-Nationals)

| European Hot Dogs Posted: 6/11/2007 8:46:46 PM | If it was smooth texture and was about the same dimension and color as a hot dog it was probably a frankenfurter which better delis have and you can certainly get them in Kensington market. They're different from hot dogs.
If it had a course grained texture it was any one of a number of smoked sausages they get over there.

Not many street vendors have computers, so googling may not help..lol

| European Hot Dogs Posted: 6/11/2007 10:00:44 PM | Dunno...but it is said by several friends from there ..that Chicago has the best street dogs in the world. | |
|
| European Hot Dogs Posted: 6/11/2007 10:07:35 PM | | I figure a dogs a dog, Now sausage on the other hand can have variety, Westfalers, Spelling may be off but they are great, get them at costco. | |
|
| European Hot Dogs Posted: 6/11/2007 10:18:50 PM | I prefer the all beef. Most of the cheap chicken, pork, sheep, dog, raccon...just have a bland flavor. | |
|

| European Hot Dogs Posted: 6/11/2007 10:37:40 PM | | Ya its all beef , not the parts you want to eat..lol | |
|
| European Hot Dogs Posted: 6/11/2007 10:44:41 PM | | An old buddy would say lips and ***holes, I still eat hotdogs, Another friend worked at a hotdog plant so to speak, you don't want to know. I know I did'nt. | |
|
| European Hot Dogs Posted: 6/11/2007 10:48:20 PM | Maybe not but great flavor!! We used to haul the filling for dogs to Sietz before they were bought out by Sara Lee. The stuff was in combo bins and looked alot like the color of bubblegum. I did repair work on their reefers and from time to time I went into the plant. When they were making the beef ones, the smell would make you so hungry you didn't give a shit what was in them..... | |
|
| European Hot Dogs Posted: 6/11/2007 10:50:58 PM | | Contrary to popular belief, the filling is not ground up where they make the product. We still haul into Sara Lee, and they make Hillshire Sausage and various hotdogs. When you see the filling, you can't recognize what it was. | |
