| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 6/14/2007 11:28:08 AM | | It will be interesting to see how the Flames players react to this signing. He's a "love him or hate him" coach who motivates by fear and I'm not sure the likes of Iginla and Hamrlik are going to buy into his iron fisted ways, not to mention Kiprosoff. Remember...Keenan is famous for pulling his goalies. I can't see Kipper being ok with being yanked in the first period, if he lets in a couple of goals. McLennan is probably the happiest man in camp right now. He knows with Keenan calling the shots, he's going to see a whole loy more ice time than ne did last year! | |

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 6/14/2007 12:39:50 PM | | Bad move for Calgary here. Sutter should go back behind the bench or hire his brother or Dale Hunter, from the OHL. Those guys can coach! | |

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 6/14/2007 12:59:23 PM | | I'd like to see Ryan McGill get a shot in the bigs, although I don't see him moving from Omaha directly to Calgary as head coach. Maybe Keenan will promote him as an assistant. He'd be a good fit for the younger players. | |

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 6/15/2007 7:11:43 AM | Interesting reading the TSN forums on this one. Not a popular move for the Calgary fans at all by the sounds of it. What kind of gets me is the fact that even though Calgary finished 8th in the West, the West is pretty darned tuff out there. They had 43 wins in the regualr season compared to Stanley Cup winner's Anaheim's 48 wins. Hardly reason to get rid of your coach and bring in Iron Mike.
I like Iron Mike from years and years ago...Philly, Chicago and the N.Y. Strangers he had very good success....going to the Finals with these times 4 times
St. Louis, Boston and Vancouver the track record wasn't so good. The Florida thing was a bit wierd as he was replaced after putting the pieces together that he liked...i.e Ed Balfour and bertuzzi...
Calgary seems to thrive on a hard hittin' defensive style with Kipper being Horatio at the bridge some nights. So keenan may help out here. Their offense the last couple of years has been their achilles heel, so maybe he might fit right into the style of play they adhere to. But it's official. he's the coach. Iron Mike is back in bizzness.

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 6/15/2007 12:56:39 PM | Sigh.
This news totally RUINED my day yesterday. What the he!! is Sutter thinking?? I had the pleasure (NOT) of meeting Keenan a fundraiser a long time ago when he coached Chicago. What a total a$$ he is in person. Arrogant and ignorant - not a good combo.
I can't even comment on his coaching style and abilities because it makes me too
I love the FLAMES and this move hurts - big time. I watched Mike destroy the Canucks and it was such a shame to see him ruin a decent team.
I am worried, very worried about Jarome, Dion and the rest of the boys in Calgary. How many players will he trade away this season?????
Not looking forward to the 07/08 season. Perhaps I will have to start cheering for my local team instead (noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo)

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 6/15/2007 6:00:45 PM | | I know someone will argue about his past successes but he has such a destructive streak. I like the Flames. They should have won it all in 2004. I hope Keenan proves us all wrong. | |

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 6/17/2007 12:41:20 PM | It doesn't surprise me in the least that Sutter would choose a coach with an iron fist. That is Sutter's style himself, and you could see his disappointment in Playfair last year, as he isn't as cut-throat as Sutter... Look what happened when he DID play cut-throat......
It certainly makes for an interesting upcoming hockey season!!!!

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 6/19/2007 5:10:30 PM | I was surprised also... BUT Keenan gave Sutter his first job in Chicago..... Full circle I guess......
I do feel sorry for the Flames fans...... Keenan was really hard on the ranger players the year they won the cup..... I read his biography.... If you don't like him now, you would hate him once your done reading it...... The way he spoke to and treated players, was just awful......

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 6/19/2007 8:40:02 PM | Aaahh geez !! ... Well, I guess he had to emerge from a 'manhole' somewhere -- too bad it was in Canada. Poor Calgary. Well, they've had a good run. I suppose they can stand a year out of the playoffs. Hopefully, when they dump Keenan mid-season or near the trading deadline he won't have traded away the whole team and there'll still be something left to build a decent team for the following year. I sure wish Mike Keenan would take up selling cars or something.

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 7/4/2007 6:08:02 AM | I guess since I'm a Flyers fan I still have a soft spot for Mike. You people question Sutters decision... he did coach a few of the Sutter brothers here in Philly. We had a cup run with him in the 86-87 season (in my opnion our best team since the mid 70's) only to lose to the BEST TEAM EVER in the NHL...Oilers. Oh btw im not an Edmonton fan.
So I think if Calargy has a young team you guys will be ok. Mike and older teams don't do to well together.

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 7/4/2007 6:18:04 AM | my gawd people, really give me a break. EVERYONE wanted playfair not as the head coach, iron mike will be great for the team. today iggy and reggie resign for 5 years each. humm if our captain and assistaint captian think calgary is the place where they wanna play seems to me they think its a good thing having iron mike coach here.
think if we went .500 on the road last season we would have won the west. think mike will let the boys dog it on the road like last season? no he will bag skate them will the next game. maybe we will get back to being the hardest team to play against again.
in sutter we trust go flames go sutter knows more about hockey then anyone here, just trust him

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 7/4/2007 7:27:57 AM | yep. i think i agree with you smackemhard. I've thought about this one for a couple of weeks now. Calgary already plays a Mike keenan hard nosed style so that won't change too much. And Sutter is almost god-like around calgary so I'm quite sure iron Mike won't be causing any untoward unrest with the upper offices. I have a feeling the Flames are going to start the season hard and play tough all year and finish strong.
This could be a blessing in disguise for Flames fans. Keep the faith that Sutter knows what's good for his club and for the city of Calgary.

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 7/4/2007 5:53:59 PM | | Mike keenan is definatley not the sollution for the flames..........he's been passed around the nhl by more teams than anyone else that come to mind.......i don't see him being a good fit | |
|
| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 7/5/2007 2:13:20 PM | so who is a good fit? really its easy to say someone isnt going to work out, hbut no one here is saying what other coach would have been better. DONT say sutter he is a gm not a coach.
plus one of the reasons why iggy resigned is because of mike, nolan also.
come on people name a coach better for the job
go flames go in sutter we trust +.500 on the road in 07-08
|
| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 7/5/2007 2:16:08 PM | "plus one of the reasons why iggy resigned is because of mike" Where are you getting that from? I've seen three separate Iggy interviews and I've yet to hear him mention Keenan. He says – and you should be very proud of this smack – that it's all about the city and the fans... and that he believes the team will get back to the Cup final. | |
|
| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 7/6/2007 1:42:09 PM | not even sure now man. ive read 4 or 5 interviews from iggy about the singing. he didnt direrctly say one reason is mike. but it was to the effect of mike is a good coach, ive only met him a few times but he is an intense person. blah blah knows alot about hockey. when his teams are winning its good, so lets just win.

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 7/6/2007 8:49:32 PM | cause sutter has a plan right? emm how many times has sutter missed the playoffs? as a head coach or gm? give your head a shake if you even ever want to ask that.

| Mike Keenan behind the bench in Calgary Posted: 12/2/2007 10:58:33 AM | Well fans here in Etown have been ready to get rid of MacT for some time (me being one of them). However, in Calgary the impatience with a team that was supposed to be top 3 in the West this year must be growing quickly. Being essentially the same place in the standings as the Oil has got to be pissing some ppl off!! I would say its too early for the Flames to punt Iron Mike, but he's been canned a few times so I would expect he packs lightly nowadays. | |
