All troops to come home from Iraq by 2009.

All troops will be withdrawn from Iraq by 2009 the governments of forces stationed there have stated, though they have not yet set a date for their withdrawel. But most likely major troop reductions will begine next spring around March or Apri 2008. Their security role will be taken over by the new national Iraqi security forces.

This is great news, just hope that it's true, although I think they should come home sooner, but since I'm not a general or even in the military or even a politician, my opinion matters zilch.

The election is in 2008, but as far as I'm concerned, it sounds a little too much like Vietnam. In 1973, we withdrew for the South Vietnamese forces to take over the war and look what happened to them.
This sounds very much alike. After six years, we finally withdraw because we can't handle the roadside bomb attacks on us. We should've withdrawn in the first place back in 2003 after the fighting really ended, like we did in Kuwait and Iraq back in 1991. We were a standing presence, not permanent.

Smoke and mirrors.

Look closely, the career politicians' mouths are moving--hint: that most likely means they're lying.

We're spending billions upon billions to build at least 14 permanent US military bases in Iraq. We won't be leaving the Middle East for generations to come--or until Halliburton et al squeeze every last cent possible from every source possible.

Ole W and his puppetmasters are laughing all the way to the bank, snickering about how gullible the public shows itself to be, and how readily we continue to allow their fascist military-industrialist regime to strip our rights and freedoms from us and bankrupt the future of our grandchildren's grandchildren.

I sincerely hope that someone can come on here in 2009 and tell me, "Nyah, nyah, you were SO wrong!"

But I think I'm more likely to see Pastafarianism become the planet's dominant religious belief by then. All hail the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

And before anyone gets on here and calls me unpatriotic, that is so far from the truth. Patriots do their best to protect their country from harm from sources foreign AND domestic. Patriots call upon their government to be accountable and uphold the ideals the country was founded on and act accordingly when their government fails them and subverts the very principles our system of government is based on. The Patriot Act and other bills crammed through our system after 9/11 are the antithesis of our founders' ideals.

Unfortunately so.

Even worse civil war if they do, more of the same if they don't.

A 'I'll believe it when I see' situation. The troops should have been withdrawn years ago when Mr Bush proclaimed 'Mission accomplished'.

War is good for business.

We can debate whether or not we should have invaded Iraq. Now that we are in there, that debate is pointless. Anyone with half a brain knows that pulling out of Iraq now would have disasterous consequences.

Anyone who believes the next person to be president will unilaterally pull out is an idiot as well.

The same people who got us into this war will be in the pocket of the next regime too.

I disagree, there is a lot of accountability that is going to be ignore with the support of that attitude of ignoring the decisions and why there were made.

I dunno. The big news right now is that Iraq has only met something like two out of the eighteen benchmarks we set for them. It wouldn't surprise me that some Republicans change their mind and pass some measures that were vetoed and shot down recently.

It is real, and it is here. Despite pledges to reduce US dependance on middle eastern oil, it isn't going to happen...

I was just thinking about this issue once again (now that Congress is back in session and full of their usual hot air) and a thought occurs to me.
A possible perfect solution to whether or not we should withdraw our troops.
Obviously, most who wish for the troops to come back home are against the current administration and in another time with another party friendly president, this would never be considered.

So I think we should consider getting all of our troops out of Iraq within the next two months.
With one single stipulation.
Those congressmen and women who want our troops to witdraw without total victory, well, they must sign a pledge. A contract with America, so to speak, that promises that upon our retreat (a total retreat!), within a 12 month time if conditions in Iraq get worse and worse even when we're not around, then the congressman/woman who supported our retreat must publicly acknowledge they were wrong.

In addition, they must also forfeit their position in government and surrender any and all benefits that accompany the job, including pensions!

There was an additional stipulation I had considered, but thought it was unrealistic: try them for treason as well.

And of course, "Worse Condition" would be defined as a civil war, or being taken over by another neighboring country, and/or also being a place that harbors/grooms terrorists. Basically if the country collapses and loses it's march towards independence and Democracy, this would be the surest of signs.

So I offer this: For those in Congress who wish for us to retreat, let's do that within two or three months time and on the condition that those who support the retreat sign the pledge.

And on the flip side, should we stay and things get worse and worse, those who wanted us to stay must also sign a similar pledge.

Think that's too much to ask?

The military cannot sustain this war for much longer. It's already at the breaking point. That's one deadline that no one outside the military wants to talk about. Report after report is indicating the potential danger of this drain on US forces in every sense of the word.

Both the main and reserve forces are overstretched far beyond what they should be undergoing.

It doesn't matter what Iraqis do, it's a simple question of mathematics.

Yes everyone wants all our troops back safe in their own beds, after they have had their milk and cookies.

Grow up. There is a reason we have a military. Without it, others would try to destroy our country and way of life. Nice try traitor. go back and hang with AJ the president(dictator) of Iran.

Please point out the threat Iraq presented to the United States.

there's nothing wrong in iraq and afghanistan that a few hundred nukes in iran and the pakistani tribal areas won't fix.

I daresay nations such as Israel would have a rather negative reaction to nuclear weapons being used so close to their borders.

if you go to war, go to war to win and do whatever it takes to win.

There was no legitimate reason for this war to begin with.

that's the way this world has been since we first crawled out of the primordial ooze.

Whatever crawled out of the ooze that we eventually evolved from, I'm fairly confident they weren't particularly interested in warring against other creatures.

US troops will always be in Iraq... just as they are still in Germany, S. Korea etc etc etc.

They needed another place to put new military bases. Saudi doesn't want them in their country anymore. Nice allies aren't they? I wonder why the US didn't invade them as the majority of 9/11 terrorists were Saudi?

So they are building some nice shiny new ones in Iraq. Still think they will pull out of there after spending billions to build them?

US troops will always be in Iraq...

I'm sure that the United States would head home right away if they weren't the only ones who could keep a lid on the situation. If France, Germany and the other sanctimonious wimps of the world want the US out, maybe they could make a credible commitment to rebuilding Iraq.

just as they are still in Germany, S. Korea

On behalf of ungrateful Germans and South Koreans everywhere, let's all give a hearty thank you to Uncle Sam for sparing those two countries from communist dictatorship. The former East Germany and the present day North Korea offer good examples of the alternative to American sacrifice and generosity.

when the American people were sold on a pre emptive war against Iraq the economy was better, houses were selling, people were buying bigger and "better" houses, we were told that the best thing we could do to support the war was to spend, spend, spend and we did, did, did...

we will leave Iraq, we have turned our eye inwards and now that we are hurting internally, few will be able to swallow the billions that we pay on a war that didn't bring anything but more terrorist and more violence, we foolishly went to war and have now clicked it off because we, as a nation are hemorrging, it's not that we've accomplished anything in Iraq that we'll be pulling out, but we are now consumed with our own health care and economic problems, much of our economic woes are a result of the war, but until we physically felt it, we were happy to go along with it...

Besides it's too lucrative to give to out contracts to foreigners. Your tax dollars at work?

Companies receiving these contracts have given substantial amounts of campaign money over the years. Their contributions have been rewarded with new contracts, even with the overwhelming amount of evidence of malfeasance. Three companies that were recently awarded the major LOGCAP IV contract (worth up to $150 billion)[iv]-former Halliburton subsidiary KBR, DynCorp, and Fluor Intercontinental-have given $2.6 million in campaign contributions between 1999 and 2006, 77 percent of which went to Republicans and President Bush. All three of these companies had problems with previous contracts, including overcharging, wasteful spending, and false claims. These contracts include tasks related to supply and field operations, engineering and construction.

Why?.... you broke it...

The international community broke Iraq when it repelled Saddam Hussein's aggression against Kuwait. Or, to be a bit more accurate, Saddam Hussein broke Iraq when he become a dictator and an aggressor.

But, if you feel that America should fix the worlds problems, then you must be in favour of telling the busybodies and eurogoofs to shut their cakeholes, and let Uncle Sam clean up their mess, as usual.

Note to Basbain: Thank You Sir for your service! Good luck in Iraq. Would have mailed you but you don't like older women - arh.

As to troops comming home. With what I just heard word of mouth, not that I've read the news; we have been warned by the Ruskies to back off?? Also heard that China is setting up a grand alliance with Mexico to build a weapons depot just the other side of the Texas/Mexico border.

If these actions are true, we NEED our troops home and building forces here.

I know how we Texans feel. If someone aggressivly comes into my backyard, the gun comes out of the safe. All rules are off. I will defend my neighbors and myself.

PS: My son is in Iraq. Note that I am a very proud mum.
