| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/25/2007 6:10:24 PM | | Just wondered. It was suggested to me, along with selenium and kelp, as a possible treatment for hypothyroid. I've done lots of research online, and have a lot of anectdotal evidence, but can't find much scientific evidence related to this. The selenium and kelp, yes, but the coconut oil, no. I did read that it's easily and quickly metabolized, and gives you energy, which would be nice after being seriously fatigued for so long. | |

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/25/2007 9:03:07 PM | From what I've read, substandard coconut oil is something I would not recommend(especially hydrogenated coconut oil or any other hydrogenated oil). Extra-virgin coconut oil though is healthy when used in moderation. Here are some links to check out about extra virgin coconut oil: http://www.risingstarlc.com/coconut.htm http://www.risingstarlc.com/coconut.pdf
Despite what the above links claim, that one brand is not the only extra virgin coconut oil available(perhaps it was back when the article was written), there are others now.

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/26/2007 10:46:37 AM | Thanks, redwood34. I've read just about everything I can on the web about it, and thought why not give it a try? I don't think it is supposed to be BAD for your thyoid. I've read it is good for it.
Anyway, I have read all the testimonials (real or not...who knows...it's the internet!), and all the stats and all the physiological considerations, so I'm giving it a try.
Just wanted to see if anyone else had used it, and what their experience was.

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/26/2007 11:20:40 AM | | i gave it a try, after reading about its properties. IF you can choke down a tablespoon of it, it can support thyroid health. i'll never do it again, because it's way too gross. i did it for about a month and i was never so happy to see the bottom of a jar. | |

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/26/2007 1:25:33 PM | | I have tried it too and did not find it gross, especially keeping in mind that it was good for you and really not much different from eating a raw coconut off the tree. It wasn't exactly the best tasting thing ever, but are there any other oils which are better for you and better tasting that are also good to cook with? If there are are, I've yet to find them. | |

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/26/2007 2:26:26 PM | Actually, I'm starting very slowly. I added 1/4 teaspoon to my coffee today, and it tasted good. I agree that just taking it by the spoonful wasn't very pleasant. Someone suggested mixing it with yogurt. I love yogurt, so I'll try that. Plain yogurt, fresh fruit, coconut oil....sounds yummy! Also, I may try cooking with it, like for frying eggs or stir frying and such. Might add a nice flavor.
Did either of you that tried it lose weight?
|
| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/26/2007 2:30:27 PM | | I lost some weight, but that could have been due to other factors like changes in amount of exercise and changes in diet so I am really not sure. If I could afford to, I'd use it all the time, but unfortunately can only afford to buy it once in awhile. | |

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/26/2007 5:24:42 PM | | Be aware that coconut,it's juices and oil are a natural laxitive... so ... you might live in the bathroom for a while if you take too much at once. | |
|
| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/26/2007 5:56:52 PM | | Hmm, never heard of that before. I never experienced that problem when I was using it, maybe it was because I kept intake down to no more than about 3 tablespoons per day. | |
|
| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/26/2007 7:41:42 PM | Yeah, I read about the laxative effect. That's why I'm doing it slowly. I took it in 1/4 tsp doses today, three times, and got some cramps, so I'm gonna slow it down. My system is pretty sensitive to laxative stuff.
Hey, maybe that's how people lose weight with it!

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/29/2007 9:25:36 AM | | I have used coconut oil for 6 months now and love it. Eating it by the spoonfull is gross and I have found that I like to put it in the microwave for a few seconds to melt it and then put in in a protien shake/smoothy with yogurt and fruit. Much easier to take that way. Coconut oil is a pure oil and I suggest looking for organic oilsover the conventional ones. It is quite high in calories, but it is not stored as fat and should not be avoided if that is your concern. I have had thyroid problems for years now and have not found that coconut oil helps or hurts this condition in any way. | |

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 6/29/2007 6:31:49 PM | Thanks, Sunny. I had read it was good for hypothyroid, that's why I wanted to try it. I'm using an organic virgin brand. So far, so good. I'm going very slowly, but so far, I seem to be tolerating it well. I'm doing a tsp. twice a day right now, trying to work my way up slowly, because of the laxative effect.
I think it's going to be good for giving me energy. Has it increased your energy, Sunny?

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 7/2/2007 7:30:24 PM | | I couldn't say for sure whether it has had any direct effects on my energy levels. I use it as part of my overall health and wellness regime and have found that my energy levels skyrocket when I am particular about what I put into my body and the amount of exercise I get. Coconut oil is not a miracle product, but as a part of a healthy whole it certainly has it's benefits. | |

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 7/11/2007 8:10:00 PM | I've been using organic virgin coconut oil for about 5 months. I use it for cooking and I don't mind the taste at all. If the taste is too strong in a particular dish, I still love olive oil. I put a tsp of coconut oil in my coffee in the morning and I use it as a moisurizer. I put in on my face too. It's rather greasy feeling if you put too much on, but your skin absorbs it and feels like velvet! My skin definitely looks better as well as feels better.
I've read that virgin coconut oil (organic) is good for thyroid function. I started using it because I was having symptoms of hypothyroidism and every time they test me, it comes back "fine". Problem was, I was exhausted most of the time, I was cold most of the time and my hair was falling out like mad...so I tried it and it seems to have helped with the body temp thing and I feel less fatigued. Jury is still out on the hair loss, as my hair is long and it always seems like I lose a lot...it's hard to tell right now. If it doesn't get any thinner, I guess it isn't hurting anything.

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 8/13/2007 2:40:04 PM | Coconut oil is not stored as fat on your body but burned for energy.

The benefits of coconut oil are outstanding and remarkable and too many to mention hence the websites provided.
Make sure if you start this, its organic, raw virgin. They say to take 3 to 4 tablespoons daily, if your are looking to take off lots of weight...even more thatn 4 tablespoons is recommended. Again, it isnt stored as fat on your body but burned as energy.
It is even good for dogs and preventing tumour growths both benign and cancerous.
I just mix it in a fruit smoothie and down it goes; you'd never know you were taking it in.

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 9/6/2007 8:48:49 PM | Extra virgin coconut oil is awesome. It is a good oil to cook with as it will withstand high heat. It is good for the heart, arteries,in fact its good for the whole body. You can use it for dry skin, chapped lips, even as a sunscreen. You can just leave the container on the counter for a year and it won't go rancid. I put a tablespoon in my morning "smoothie". The fruit helps to hide the taste. | |

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 9/6/2007 10:07:43 PM | I use it for cooking, but I have to lower the temp. or else I cannot scrape off the eggs. It isn't the same as most other oils for cooking.
Beware.
But it is good for you.
Dr. Mercola and other "guru's" feel the same way.

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 9/7/2007 11:01:30 AM | Lil trick with cooking your eggs. Spray a tiny bit of antisticking product on the pan...then add the coconut oil. They won't stick now
Yes...Dr. Mercola is all over that coconut oil. I was concerned about the saturation but find....it is actually good for your heart. Coconut oil is also an anti-viral. Amazing!!! No heart disease with pacific islanders where coconut oil was used in abundance until the inception of hydrogenated oils.
Best wishes Peace | |

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 9/10/2007 2:50:32 PM | | I have been using coconut oil for years it is an awesome product.I also use a grapeseed oil that comes from Greece. which is nice switch my mom has a hypothyriod. She is always battling wt. gain. She has done the old switch a roo now. Her weight gain is actually under control. The other thing like other's have stated it is not a stored fat.. If you are even moderately active you should burn it off. | |

| Anyone ever use coconut oil? Posted: 10/27/2009 1:58:58 PM | Gotta bring this thread back to life here...
If the calories aren't to be worried about, should I not be counting them? Or should one get down to their target weight before starting on the coconut oil if it's energy burned (since if someone is trying to lose fat, they will want to burn the fat already stored, right?)
I wanted to start taking 1tbsp Coconut Oil, 1tbsp Olive Oil and 1tbsp Flax Oil a day for all the healthy benefits, but am concerned that overall it would be too much of an increase in caloric intake. I try to eat from 1200 to 1400 cal a day (sometimes more, depending on the occassion.... sometimes less if it's a day or two after the "occassion", haha...), but I feel like the coconut oil alone (120 calories) is a snack in itself. Not sure how to incorporate it into my diet without GAINING weight, which is what it seems it would do.
Perhaps I'll just start with the coconut oil (1tsp a day) and see how that goes before adding 1tsp at a time of the other oils, too.
I does taste and smell awesome, though. I can easily eat it plain or think of a million other ways to eat it. Can't wait to try it on my skin!
I really need to read more about this stuff.
