Given that we are supposedly a nation of animal lovers which of our furry friends do we like most and who rocks when it comes to petting power. Mos of us are single so do we have a pooch or a puss at home to welcome us on those lonely singleton evenings home from work. Let's have your thoughts ...

It has got to be a dog, I have one, Jake and because I live alone he is good to come home to I have pretty much always had dogs, although we had a cat when I was small, only because it was a stray living in the house we moved in to when I was about 4/5. It ended up eating some weed killer and dying. When Jake goes, I may get a kitten and a puppy at the same time, so they get on.

well i have a beautiful black and white puss called Lollie Lou. Used to have an amazing tabby called Fred but he heartbreakingly got run over when we were on holiday a few weeks ago in Lanzerote. Cats are very empathetic. Lollie knows when I am sad and always makes me happy.

The reason this thread may have been up for deletion is because it isnt a topic for discussion according to the rules.. If you say do you prefer one thing to another then you dont actually leave any scope for discussion..
I like both cats and dogs but had to rehome my dog as she ate my hallway walls.. literally have about 7 holes in the walls..
I have 3 cats and the baby one is a complete sod. He keeps attacking the other 2 and thinking he is well 'ard.

my cats are good companions and when im stressed, they calm me with their quiet natures.
my pekingese is loyal and i love the way he greets me when ive been out and the fun we have when we play. he also picks up on my moods and even he stears clear when im due on!
the downsides?
the cats shit stinks somit chronic and my pup has no common sense when it comes to house training.
the dog thinks he owns the kids and the cats think they own me.

next time i'll get a pet stick insect

Nope... Cats are like some women. They look at you sideways and think i'll hang around as long as you feed me and keep me warm and stroke me when i want stroking, I'll come and go as i please and i will not answer to you so dont even bother... and if you don't like it...
I'll just go next door and get what i want there!

I'm in for it now aren't I?

Has to be cats, they come and go when please, and don't have to take them out for walks! I find them easier to care for than dogs.
I have 2 cats myself.

I have 2 dogs, a cat and a tortoise. I love the way that dogs adore their owners but I like the independence of a cat - I love the fact that a tortoise doesnt leave hair everywhere!

i have had dogs and now i have a cat.

i love both.... (not in the illegal sense u understand!!)

i just received this email which pretty much sums up the difference between the two, attitude wise. And SO true!!

DOG DIARY8:00 am - Dog food! My favourite thing! 9:30 am - A car ride! My favourite thing! 9:40 am - A walk in the park! My favourite thing! 10:30 am - Got rubbed and petted! My favourite thing! 12:00 pm - Lunch! My favourite thing! 1:00 pm - Played in the Yard! My favourite thing! 3:00 pm - Wagged my tail! My favourite thing! 5:00 pm - Milk bones! My favourite thing! 7:00 pm - Got to play ball! My favourite thing! 8:00 pm - Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favourite thing! 11:00 pm - Sleeping on the bed! My favourite thing !

CAT DIARY Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. The dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed some sort of dry nuggets.Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless, must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However - they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. B4stards!! There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies". I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage. This morning? I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow - but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe.
For now...
Cat

err, I've got a Giant Schnauzer...
and yep, he's smart... in the infuriating but endearing 'why on earth should I sit at the kerb - we can both see & hear there's not a car for miles' kind of way.

I'm not an either/or, I love both for the reasons most have already mentioned

I'm a cat person but I do love dogs too. Dogs in a more give them back when they're annoying sort of way. A bit like other people's children.

I have 5 good-for-nothing moggies. at the moment two are asleep on the sofa and one on the chair. Don't know where the others are. Probably out tormenting something.

Having cats, I never come downstairs, bleary-eyed and barefoot in the morning. Slippers every time. The risk of stepping on a corpse or in vomit is too high!

I'm definitely a cat person, although I love dogs I couldn't have one because they are too dependent on humans.

With a cat, if I have to go abroad for a couple of days, I know that if I put enough food out then the cat will be quite content nipping in and out the house whilst I'm away. A dog relies on you to come home for walks and letting it out to do it's business.

The only thing that YoYo does that annoys me, is wake me in the middle of the night by licking my face. I did go downstairs yesterday though and find a mouse running around the front room, cat must have brought it in and it escaped, as usually I just find the bits and pieces all over the place.

I do like pets, they definitely provide you with the company that is sometimes missing, although I often think my cat talks more sense then most of the women I've dated.

I love both...but i find cats easier to look after. No taking out for walks etc. Only problem i have with them, and i detest it, is they like walking over my kitchen counter!! Drives me nuts. I have two cats, had one since it was 8 weeks old and the other when 4 months old. They are both 3 years old now
Always wanted another Golden Labrador though. My kids keep going on about getting a dog!! Got enough with the 2 cats and the kids

And yes i talk to my cats lol

I've always had dogs up until 2 yrs ago. I've now got 2 cats called Belle & Geoff. They are so fab & Belle runs down the stairs to greet me when I come in from work. She's so friendly & loves a cuddle.
I do miss not having dogs around but I've got alot more freedom having the cats so aswell as going away when I want & not having to worry as much they are still great company when I'm on my own.
I've always had pets of some kind so couldn't imagine not having that around. It's also lovely to have that pet curl up with you when you're a bit down & they seem so happy, just brightens you up.
At least pets, whether cats or dogs, will never judge you & will just love you for you!

we've always had dogs as our main family pet since i can remember and i love em.....but the first time i got a place with a girl she wanted a kitten....i was a little dubious at first as i hadn't had much contact with cats...but within a week i was hooked....cat's have soooooo much character and personality they're amazing creatures......
i'll always regard a dog as mans best friend and i love them.......but unless you have the time to spend with and exercise a dog you shouldn't have one, they're social creatures and they need love and affection and daily exercise.
cat's on the other hand are quite happy to be left to sleep on your bed all day or take a stroll out alone when the need arises......i could comfortably leave a cat for 12hrs alone but not a dog.......and thats the reason i switched from dogs to cats.....i've never had a cat that smells all mine have been super clean and egotistical snobs lol....they're extremely intelligent..full of fun and mischief.....and very loving

I have always had both cats and dogs at the same time, like them both....although you need time for a dog, cats are their own bosses.........
Message 11....had an element of truth......Reminds me of when i was walking down the road one day and saw a house with 3 cats sat in the window, each pruning itself, one looked just like mine......on a second glance, it was mine!!!!!!!........crafty so and so was going through their cat flap during the day whilst i was out, eating the food of the cats that lived there, then returning at teatime knowing i had returned home......and the house belonged to a police officer as well....LOL...
