| | Nigerians and Yahoo PersonalsPage 1 of 2 (1, 2) | Well take note, this was sent to me by a gentlemen who knows I bait.
He writes
About a week ago, I came across a personals ad at Yahoo Personals with two photos of an attractive petite woman taken by a professional photographer. The woman in the ad was listed as being 27, living within 50 km of where I live, and that her first and only spoken language was English (You will see why this is important in a moment.). Being a sucker for a beautiful face, I sent an ice breaker, a simple one line pick up message from a predetermined list used by Yahoo Personals, to the woman in the ad. Three or four days later, I got the following reply. Please note that this is completely unaltered:
She wrote to him:

Beware! assisting another in the act of fraud carries a 20 year coviction! Mmmm Ever wonder why they are ALWAYS having problems cashing their money orders???
|
| Nigerians and Yahoo Personals Posted: 5/4/2005 12:05:45 AM | | Had this happen to me the other day on myspace... amazing the lengths these people go to too, they gave me their yahoo messenger screenname and chatted it up with me for like 3 days before all of a sudden "hey I need help with this money order that I can't cash, let me send it to you and you wire transfer the money back to me ok?"... a gut instinct and a google search later revealing the scam routine and I was like no way "babe" find yourself another sucker. | |

| Nigerians and Yahoo Personals Posted: 5/7/2005 6:51:48 PM | Got one for you!! THis guy sees my profile on Webdate, starts a chat with me. Tells me he is from the UK, but won't give me a city name. Also tells me he is in nIgeria, buying goods for his import/export company. Well we chat for a while, I am polite, but suspicious because his language is strange (like he's translating), he is going on about his "feelings". Shortly he asks for my help with cashing a check and wiring him the money. A friend in finances tells me the FBI is invstigating this, so play along. A few days later I recieve a check, totally different name on the check, and it is from AZ, NOT Nigeria. I did some research, found the address on the check was a Wendy's rest. Called the bank it was drawn off of, and it is not a valid acct. When the guy came back and asked about it, I played the "dumbstruck female" with the "Oh My god, what am I to do now?" routine. Well, he then sends 3 seperate money orders, one gets siezed by customs, the others he glues inside of a magazine so they do not know it is there. Well, I called the compnay that supposedly drew up the MOs, and they informed me that they were already cashed back in February for different amounts. Well, he freaks out when I tell him the bank will not cash them. He claims he has to take it to the police, yada, yada, yada. Well he popped up yesterday asking me to send him money, when I declined he became angry and asked how could I leave him there at the mercy of such a corrupt people! Well, i am still waiting to hear baout the investigation here, but I am laughing at how presumptious this guy is!
To make a long story short (too late I know! ) drop me a line and I'll give you his yahoo SN.

| Nigerians and Yahoo Personals Posted: 5/24/2005 9:13:19 AM | yeah, I have had similar experiences from both yahoo and loveaccess.com... pictures that look professional or possibly just grabbed from an online catalog of some kind. eventually, usually within first hours of chatting, mention of africa, jerk professes he loves me... lol.. 'we were meant to be'.. how funny. It doesn't take much to bust them. I ask pretty easy questions, birthday, where'd you go to college, are you native to your area? asking the same question later usually produces a different answer.. Lots of "lol" and "yup". they are usually widowed or wife left them for another man. anything for sympathy.
like many here, i am here to find a suitable mate. once that is accomplished, i'm outta here! even those that are honest enough to say they are only here for sex, get a thumbs up from me. at least they are honest from the start.

| Nigerians and Yahoo Personals Posted: 6/1/2005 6:35:49 PM | My girlfriend and I have roommates. The new, at least to us, scam is to say they want to be your roommate. I know better then to give any bank account and/or credit card info out, but thought I was secure asking for Western Union or Money Order...I THOUGHT WRONG. We got fraudlent postal service money orders. I have always understood those to be good as cash...boy was I wrong. We cashed them, and yes, (I feel stupid now) but had never heard of this, sent money back. Neither we nor the bank caught this crap. Now we are dealing with a closed bank account and filling out police reports. Hindsight is always 20/20. Next time I take the money order to the institution it was theoretically drawn on, either the money is there or it is not. Also, if a potential roommate is out of country, I will tell them, if you want me to hold the room send it Western Union...period.
Filling out all the police reports is more then a pain. And we still have to worry about the bank coming back after us...this is just bad.
My business is starting to get going, hopefully we will not need roommates by the beginning of 2006, at least that is the plan...first time I took a chance on an out of country roommate. ouch, next time, I will just wait until they get to town, then we can talk.
To add insult to injury, after I found out I got defrauded, started seeing the notices here (joined here after this happened to me, wish it would have been before) and everywhere. Don't trust money orders, do not run them through your account, take them back to the institution that created them, and remember if they use Western Union, and you go to Western Union, either the money was good or it was not, let Western Union check this for you! At least that is my recomendation!

| Nigerians and Yahoo Personals Posted: 6/7/2005 11:09:25 PM | Hi And you know bad thing lot of it not coming from Nigerians. it just got dub Nigerian 411 cause of the first scam did come out of that country. Just say most of it out of New York,Florida and now coming out of california. But useing Nigerain banks. Since it one few countries with relax laws on banking from other countries. If you think about it most african countries don't even have net access. Been there a few times. Took me days just to find a phone. Let a lone a computer. and the ones who do have them Are yes scammer, drug dealers and just say plain bad guys. But if you get them by email there easy to track down if they come through to your microsoft Outlook or outlook express. There a hiden program in that will let you trace the email route. Plus most who used Windows have a finger printed system. after a while just matter time. For a certain agency to track them down. from the hidden code that sent with every email. Some scammer relized this and started using Off site emailing system like yahoo and hotmail. But they to are being shut down from these site. So now there useing other none secured websites to scam people. But the best way is to report it to website or a local Internet law inforcement agency. Lot bigger cities have them now days. Check with your local police department for details. Only you as end user can put a stop to this. As for Ebay If they dont have pay pal or some other electronic verified way of payment. I don't except or bid on the item if not a verified banking arrangment.. Yet some will still try send you check. and I just put it back in envolope and return to sender. and Inform Ebay why? Make some good honest people mad cause I do this. But to many scammers working the net now days.

Man they all have just about the same story, and they want money so make sure not to give out any important information. I hear even by giving out your name and address they can do some damage. It is so funny if you go on the Nigerian official Govt. website they have posting of WARNINGS about the problems of SCAMS in Nigeria. SO be aware and tell them that your prayers are with them.... and say good bye .....

Don't give personal information to any one no matter how official they may seem.. Some scams have web sites that look like real businesses or official sites beware.. Check everything out if you don't know who you are dealing with before you're sorry..
