Tatoos in late 20s
Posted: 6/27/2007 5:09:43 PM
Hey folks. Been thinking about getting a tattoo, however I am 27 years old.

This is not to attract women or "feel cool", it's just something I want to do.

However, at my age, do you think women would be put off? To be more precise, I intend to get one that is very visible, very tribal (Mohawk/Algonquin), that goes from the top of my shoulder up my neck just below the jaw bone. It's my first and most likely my only tattoo I'll ever get. I've checked at work and they do not *approve* of it, but since it deals with religion/spirituality they will consider it like a turban (which is okay to wear in the office).

Will this be a turn-off to most women? This reason was near the bottom of my list but it is important to know haha.

Thanks for any replies I can get.

The one thing I would ask you to do is check out some 'old' men with tattoos... When the skin starts to sag.. especially around the neck area ...and the colour starts to fade the tattoo may not have the impact it initially did. Infact quite the opposite.
As for having a tattoo, thats your choice to make.

Sounds like you have already made up your mind. If someone won't date you because of a tat, then that's their problem.

Dude,

Get the tat cause guess what, when your neck is old and wrinkly, it's going to be ugly no matter what's drawn on it. That goes for any place on your body that ages quickly due to exposure...it's gonna look bad anyway, might as well cover it with a tat.

I don't like tattoos, and would never get one myself....(i love henna tattoos though) But that has never stopped me from dating a guy with a tattoo. As long as it's no excessive and tastefully done I can deal with it.

Hrmm... bring on the full-body tat! haha.

I think the best way of looking at it is that there is no guarantee I'll make it to the point where I get wrinkly.

As for the whole "Don't worry about what she thinks" thing. Easy to say - hard to implement. First impressions are the most important and some folks are still ignorant of the whole tattoo thing. However, y0u are right. I have already decided - I'm just seeing what the common thought on this topic is from the ladies.

The choice is yours. However, think about the consequences; if you want to remove it (costly and painful or so I hear). When you age is it going to be as appealing as when you had nice/tight skin?

I personally do not like them. I considered it for a second and then I said NAH. I like wearing feminine clothng and I don't find it very attractive having "graffiti" on my body (having it exposed). Maybe if it were in a place that was not so visible?

This is my personal opnion for me. You do what you feel comfortable with.

Best,

How would you like a disease free of charge with that tatoo? Spend your money on something else. Like an education.

The worst thing I ever saw was a woman in her 70's or so - in the gym change room - with her old wrinkled tatoos - I actually threw up in my mouth a little!!
Hey tatoos are a very personal choice - all I can really say is - make sure they have deep meaning to you and they are placed on your person in an area you can live with the rest of your life!

Just my 2 cents...... Tattoos are a form of self exspression and form of deep sentimental value. I for one have several tattoos and dont get them because im trying to impress others either. When i put new ink on me, i get a high like no other. I also believe it makes my self confidence grow with every stroke of the machine. Back to your question.... I always get the 1000 questions of what is it, when did you get it, where did you get and thats really nice followed by her name and number!!

~OP~ If you feel the need to ask this in a public forum, you probably really don't want a tattoo. I have two, didn't have any until I was 36. My Mother got her's at age 58, I think. Neither of us needed others to validate our decisions. It's very personal and it's permanent. I don't care what man judges me based upon my ink ~ most don't even know I have any. But if they don't like tattoos, they aren't going to be with me long ~ I'm feeling the itch to get another.

I got my first 2 tatts when I was almost 30, but had thought about it for several years, knowing they'd be a permanent part of me. I got small ones that can be covered up when the situation calls for it. I don't know what kind of job you have now or intend on having in the future, but I would think hard about having the tattoo put on your neck. If you get colors on it realize that they will fade over time. I've had one recolored and another one needs it. I got my last tattoo in black, less to fix later. Good luck with your decision and your tattoo, should you get it. Make sure you go to a good shop!!!

It's such a personal decision whether to get a tat or not and where to put it. Personally, I got my first one at age 37 and my second one at age 40. I've got my third one booked for this October. All are deeply meaningful to me and I have no regrets. I did think long and hard about location.

But you are asking for an opinion on yours...I love Tribals and think they look fabulous. My personal opinion is to stay away from the neck area and keep it in a location that will not attract negative attention in the years to come.

My tattoo artist refuses to do necks because of the negative attention it creates. You should speak with a reputable artist and get opinions before you commit to such a visible location.

But that's just my opinion. Good luck!

I guess it would really depend on why you want the tattoo. I have a friend who has a ton of tattoos and I was talking to him about them one day and he says he always waits at least 3-6 months from the time he wants one until the time he gets it, just to make sure he wants it. Sometimes he's even waited for a year. You have to remember that they hurt like hell and they're pretty much there forever, unless you go in for painful and expensive tattoo removal, and even then it might not go away 100% (a different friend had her tattoo removed and if you look you can still see where it was, plus there's some scarring, she still has to go in for a few treatments though), plus they can get expensive.

As for how women will react, some will think it's hot, some will hate it and some will be indifferent. For some (like me) whether they like the tattoo will really depend on the tattoo and the guy and all sorts of things. I've seen guys with great tattoos and they totally drove me wild and I've seen guys with awful tattoos.

OP; it's your body. if you choose to show your ancestry/ religious viewpoints, I say GOOD ON YOU! It's certainly got more meat to it than some of the gang-banger drek I've seen walking the streets of my hometown. Pfeh.

If you've chosen to wait this long, thinking about your ink, the meanings behind it, etc, I figure you've also spent some thought on how it might appear when you've aged some. Personally, I don't think age is much of a factor, except in one department; skin elasticity. It's a given, that for most folks, their skins lose some of the collogen that provides a skin's firmeness, but really, I doubt it will affect your ink much if the colours and fine detail are limited in number. Otherwise, I feel that our society is far too obsessed with age and ageing; it becomes simple media-fuelled vanity-induced illnesses, IMO. There is more to us than our outside.

Tats do fade, depending on the quality of ink, how deep the ink was placed, etc, so shop around for your artist. It can make a difference in your tattoo and it's wearability.

As for disease, a reputable tattooist will be not only licensed, but s/he must meet the guidelines for BEING licensed. In other words, they must have an autoclave, their needles must be fresh and sterile for each new tattoo, and the artists MUST wear sterile, surgical gloves after scrubbing thoroughly with an antiseptic soap. If they have a cold, or are coughing, they wear a mask to minimize germ-transmission (or they just don't work until they are well again). If a person is going to some back-lot, grungy place that's unlicensed and dirty, then they deserve what garbage they get.

I only have one at the moment, but I hope that by the time I die, I will have a large portion of my body inked. It's not to impress anyone, or attract people, or whatever shallow, silly reasons those who aren't in the know believe are the REAL reasons for our art, but for ME, to celebrate life, it's pains, it's joys. And frankly, it's more interesting to me than any album full of blurry pix by amateur photogs would ever be.

Get your art, it obviously means something important to you. But may I suggest one small change in it's arrangement? Keep the sides and front of your throat free of work- since this is likely the basis of your employer's aversion to the idea; this is the visible part of your neck that everyone will see. If you feel you must have neck ink, think about the back of your neck, and have your tattoo flowing down your shoulders and chest as you originally planned. By the way, your idea sounds lovely.

I'd say go for it. The only caveat would be that the neck can be on of the most painful parts of the body to have tattooed (apart from, I hear, the glans, the inside of the lip, and the head behind the ear). However, I have a tattoo behind my ear (visible whenever I tie my hair back), and it didn't hurt at all - some people are sensitive and some aren't.

Plus I agree with the poster above - the 'it'll look ugly when you're old and wrinkly' argument is daft. You're not going to look good when you're sagging and wrinkling regardless of ink! Plus the argument about ink fading on old men isn't valid with modern inks. Tattoos will fade slightly and the outlines will become less sharp, but not nearly to the extent of the old navy tattoos the poster probably had in mind.

And the point about disease is ridiculous. Of course you'll go to a reputable place and make sure you get a fresh needle etc. And a tattoo like that would probably set you back no more than £150 - not quite enough for an education, I should think.

I'm 28 and thinking of getting another tattoo. Although mine wont be as large and in charge like yours, it would still be something sentimental to me. Age shouldnt be a factor for you. Its your body, no one elses.

I have seen several male patients in their 80's with tats. Now theres something wrong if they get a tat of a half naked women on their arm......and even HER boobs are sagging. Just make sure its tasteful and located in a place that won't yield consequences in the future.

You should sleep on it for a couple of months!!! If you lose interest in that particular tattoo and start thinking of a different one. It may be a safe bet that you don't really need one. The last thing you want is to regret getting it. When I got my one and only tat I was going through a phase and didn't realize it. At least its on the back of my neck and I dont have to see it everyday.

I can't see what the issue with age is. If it is something you want to do and has meaning for you - go ahead. If someone cares about you, they will accept whatever you have done. Personally, I'm planning on getting two in the near future, both to mark what for me have been pretty significant events.

I know you are looking for woman’s advise but BerryPie is right.
Around the neck is not a great idea for your first tattoo especially when you get older unless you stay in shape you can always have the color redone.
I have a number of tattoos at 56 I am glad I never had one above the neckline although I am happy with the ones I have had for years some over twenty-five years ago and the color is still like yesterday.
Just be very careful who does the work and it is something worth putting on your body.

what is turnoff is you asking other people what they think. you should do what you think. especially if it is supposed to be "religious".

every please!

People who get tattoos are making a commitment! if nothing else, respect them for that. Must we be so superficial? If a tattoo on someone who I spent the rest of my life with ended up being a saggy blur; it would end up being a monument to their dedication. I wouldn't ever hold it against them, unless it was "Mr. Cool Ice" (if you don't know, image Google him). Tattoos shouldn't be an impulsive or superficial thing to begin with. If they are and lack meaning, then its a testament to their own foolishness, in which case, I probably wouldn't be with them anyways. Other then that, I love tattoos. The more, the merrier.
