| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 9:26:01 AM | I have done a search, cannot find anything so thought I'd start one.
Do you go to them much?
Do you think the advertisements and trailers are getting longer?
Do you think they are worth the cost of getting in and buying the snacks i.e popcorn on top.
I am asking this as I took my daughter to see Shrek 3 earlier.
The time for the showing was 11.30, so I was rushing about this morning to get there on time, I had 5 mins spare once I got there so went and brought medium popcorn, medium drink (as I was advised it was cheaper doing that than getting small like I originally asked for) and a fruit shoot.
I spent just under £20 to get in plus the food and drink.
Once in the room, we sat down and waited in anticipation for the animation to be shown.
We waited and waited finally half an hour of advertisments, even one was for missing Madeline. By the time the film came on, my daughter (4) was already fed up and bored !! An hour later it was all over.
To say I left a little disappointed is an understatement and probably won't go again for awhile again.
What are you feelings regarding cinemas?

| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 9:30:13 AM | I decided other Saturday to treat myself to see the new Pirates film, a new local cinema said it started at 1.30 so I got there at 1. There were 2 young girls on the counter a queue a mile long, by time I got to the till the film had started only to be told they wouldnt let people in after it had started.
So Im going to go back to renting a DVD, might have to wait, but not half as long as I did in that queue!
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 9:30:21 AM | you can't beat seeing a film on the big screen
yes they overcharge for stuff but just take your own in and be cheap skate lol
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 9:32:06 AM | I very rarely go anymore, they are total rip off!
I prefer to wait for the DVD to come out if there's anything I want to see.
There was a programme a while ago about how much of a rip off the food is too. You can't take your own food in because of 'hygiene' reasons apparently but the mark up on the food at cinema's is horrendous.
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 9:34:01 AM | they don't search your bags so you can take anything you want in
bring back the days you could get a beer in your local cinema
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 9:35:12 AM | Well rule number 1 is NEVER buy food there; it's a complete rip off. The boys and I always take our own stuff, which saves a fortune.
As for the adverts etc, ive always thought they were part of the fun. Love to see the trailers for new movies. I'd say as a rule, we go to the cinema about 3 times a month and love it. There is nothing better than seeing a film on the big screen, with the sound and atmosphere. I have to say that I first took my eldest when he was 4 and he got a bit fidgety, but I persevered, because it's something ive always loved doing.
These days, you have a choice of getting a DVD or going to the cinema, as they seem to be released on DVD so quickly nowadays. But for me, its always going to be the pictures :0)
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 9:36:38 AM | I try to go at non-busy times at about 20 minutes after the stated start time, (give it a few days for the rush to see the new film to die out) and they should be just getting to the end of their adverts by then.
NEVER buy food or drink in the cinema, its a con, buy in advance and take with you in a carrier bag, I always do that if it's going to be a long film, and I'm hungry.
Find out the deals they offer...
We have a cinema here called vue which does a deal on a tuesday. If you go see a film on a tuesday, they give you a voucher to see any film at any time on any tuesday for only £2 next time, so basically, I goto the cinema every tuesday, for cheap.
One trick (yeh i know, me and my tricks) is to get a helium balloon and let it go, right in the centre of the cinema, so the projection of the film passes right through the string and its so high up no one can move it or get it down again. It interferes with the film very slightly, with a little line through the top of the screen where the string is blocking the projection.
Then you can demand your money back but they give you a voucher/guest pass to come back and watch it another time, but the voucher simply says 'free pass for any film' so you can see another film for free another time.
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 9:38:36 AM | Yeah sometimes go to the cinema and it does annoy you when they bring out the special edition dvd with scenes not seen in the cinema so you have to watch it again anyway!! I never get popcorn or anything at the cinema! Its gone up alot as well 6 quid each to watch a film!! But you'll always go its good for dating I suppose! Who cares how many ads there are when yr on the back seat!! | |
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 9:40:05 AM | Lol Tan I will bare your trick in mind for next time.
I would usually wait for the DVD to come out but due to the weather being so bad I thought I'd treat us both, I think I've learnt my lesson now lol.
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 9:40:45 AM | I'm not very good at sitting still for ages. Especially in an uncomfortable cinema seat.
I rarely watch films at home, never mind at the cinema. I think that the last time I went was about five years ago!

| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 10:03:15 AM | Bring back the good old days - do you remember when you got a mini film and then the full movie.
Also, if you missed the beginning you could sit there all day watching the same film over and over again.
Something I take popcorn and drinks, (have even walked in with KFC) and no one has ever stopped us. And sometimes buy from them, depends how rich I am that month
But agree over all, prices are stupidily high, and cinemas' will outprice themselves one day.
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 10:36:35 AM | No dont go much cos nearest one is 12 miles away
yes the trailers are soo long and the adverts are boring as well as long
no they're not worth the cost of getting in and the price of popcorn and stuff is horrendous
I used to like going to the cinema as a kid when we had one in town , it wasnt expensive but now liek everything else , tis just a money making scheme for companies ,
I prefer to wait til films come on dvd then rent or buy , so much better to watch a film in your own home , you can stop the film when you need to as well
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 1:16:15 PM | I have been a few times lately, I found the drinks and food costs extortionate, the adverts were not too long, but I do think a three hour film in one go is a bit much Pirates of Caribbean 3), a ten mins break would be well in order! One complaint I have is that big budget films seem to be held on a the cinemas for a good few weeks but the ones that don't get much publicity are dumped rapidly, I went to see Beatrix potter with a friend and we both thought "Music and lyrics" which was advertised would be worth seeing, it came on the one week and I am sure before it had done a week it was dropped, ended up seeing Amazing Grace instead which in all fairness was an excellent film! I really think the Cinemas are killing off some really good films! | |
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 3:35:20 PM | 1. Going when you're single isnt much fun as my mates are pretty boring (called me a party animal last night for dancing for 4 hours straight in a club)
2. yes i do - the adverts are just LAME. i work in advertising/marketing and have yet to remember anything ive seen on a cinema screen.
3.no i think theyre way overpriced. Most have a policy that you're not to take in any food of your own which is a total con!
4. if you're going to an early showing just turn up 1/2 hour late and you'll miss most of the ads.
|
| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 3:46:57 PM | I don't like going on my own so don't go very often even though I do love it. I recently made my son go with me to see the Pirates of the Caribbean as a punishment lol. I pretty much always take nibbles bought in advance from Woolworths or such like and drinks, which does bring the cost right down. I have also bought tickets on the internet. The Vue where I live have never questioned me on the tickets I have bought so usually i'll get a child ticket for my son and a student one for me. I put his ticket on the top and they just rip them both at the same time. This doesn't really save me money as you get a charge for paying via the net, but it does mean I buy pass all the queues and don't pay the extra.
I don't think you can beat watching some films on the big screen. I love it!!!

| Cinema's Posted: 6/30/2007 4:44:32 PM | | msg 13 - Mike, the smaller budget films used to be well catered for in smaller "arthouse" cinemas - I saw "reservoir dogs" at Pictureville in Bradford in 1991 (I think, long before it got banned anyway!) and they always had lots of the less mainstream films. Sadly, multiplexes have done for the small local cinema, they can't really compete | |
|
| Cinema's Posted: 7/1/2007 3:29:40 AM | My local cinema is overpriced and very short on options of films to watch...even having 13 screens... Id rather wait till the film comes out on dvd and then buy a box of popcorn and a bottle of cola and sit happily in the dark.... | |

| Cinema's Posted: 7/1/2007 3:56:28 AM | Ahhh... This brings back memories of the old "Pearl and Dean Presents...", you know: "ba ba ba baa, ba ba ba baa ba ba ba" etc!
Sitting in the circle lobbing popcorn at the people in the stalls, not to mention clubbing together to buy a ticket for one of us so he could go let us all in through the fire exit!
eeeeeee, those were the days.
These days I much prefer to create the atmosphere in my own home by the use of pirate DVDs, where there is always some bod in a baseball cap pops up on the screen on the way to the loo at some point.
I like to leave the radio on a talk programme somewhere quietly in the vicinity for just the right amount of inaudible chatter, and a small Mamod steam engine chugging away is a perfect substitute for the inevitable "shushing".
In these days of microwaves it's easy to create perfect Cinema Popcorn by over cooking it, and taking a £20 note and simply throwing it in the bin.
I have put one of my cat's eyes out and trained him to walk backwards across the floor from time to time and I have several paper cups harvested from the bin near the coffee machine at work, and make sure that I fill one with cheap ASDA ice cream, which I allow to thaw for at least 20 mins before I eat it with a wooden spatula thingy that I nicked from my local GP's.
And finally to set the mood, I have amassed a collection of out-of-focus stills of local flock-wallpapered indian restaurants, and have created the inevitable echoey advert with the mandatory phrase "Only a few doors away from this theatre"
Pah, who needs multiplexes anyway!
|
| Cinema's Posted: 7/1/2007 6:40:12 AM | I remember years ago..Saterday morning at the pictures was a treat. We got a shilling each off me dad, 6d to get in, money fer an ice cream and a drink and still had change for sweets on the way home. Ahh those were the days!!!
Nearest cinema to me is in town, and entrance is £6.50 to get in. but if we do go, we go on Wednesday so get one entry free (mobile fone offer). Prices for drinks and snacks are way too expensive, so off to local co-op first to get our bag of goodies. Crisp anyone???
|
| Cinema's Posted: 7/1/2007 6:44:54 AM | | i think you get good sound from the cinema, althought its a given that when you get placed in a seat, someone taller will sit in front of you. | |
|
| Cinema's Posted: 7/1/2007 7:36:43 AM | Oh I love the cinema. Still have to sit right at the back everytime, take my own sweets & drink. I love the trailers, it's all part of it. It is getting alot dearer though to go.
