Posted: 7/12/2007 5:12:46 AM | I was chatting to a male friend (who is not particularly tall) online recently who was bemoaning the fact that although he gets on great with women, very few ladies above his height will date him (he is 5 ft 5 in).
I know we all have our personal criteria when seeking out potential partners, but I just wondered why guys is quite happy to date a shorter lady, why it seems not to be the norm for ladies to date shorter guys.
I am sure this DOES happen sometimes, but I can't say it's something I have personally seen very often. I would be grateful for your thoughts on this matter :0) | |

If the women in question aren't then why would he want to date them if they feel uncomfortable with it in the first place?
As a rule, I don't date women taller than me but thats just a picky preference I guess? | |

Im only 5ft but would NEVER date a guy under 5'10", im sure a lot of posts will bang on about how wrong that is, but its my personal choice.
My best girl friend is 6' and finds it really hard to meet guys who are tall enough for her to date when she is wearing her heels, she would not even consider dating a guy smaller than her. | |

Personally I don't have a problem with anyone of any height dating whomsoever they please.
I'm vertically challenged, even for a woman, so it's not something I've ever had to consider!

Men like to feel they are the dominant partner in a relationship - at least physically
Women like to feel "safe and protected" by their men
I know I'm generalising to a great extent here - I dont mean all men and all women and I dont mean that these must always happen for a relationship to be successful - so please dont flame me for mysogeny here peeps.
But if the woman is taller than the man it can leave him feeling "physically inferior" and her feeling like if something happens she will be the one keeping him safe. Just subconciously but then subconcious thoughts/feelings can break a relationship that for all concious reasons seems fine.

Maybe some women feel a taller man would be better at "protecting" them, or a man feels like a "true male" if he is taller, IYSWIM, I dunno.
The guy I dated who was shorter wouldn't tolerate nonsense from anyone (mind you his being ex army may have had something to do with that  ) and the taller guy was quite the pascifist. | |

I prefer taller men definately,but if I was so attracted to them,no it would not put me off,my ex husband was the same height as me,the only problem I had with that was on our wedding day,he wouldn't let me wear heals as he thought the photos would look silly,but that was more his view than mine | |

Sounds familiar.
Though I can fully understand why. It is only in keeping with our subconscious programming. At least that's what I tell myself.
I really love it when people can buck the trend, put a middle finger up to societies norms, and get past all that caveman bullsh!t that has become so pointless in todays age, so why not.. go for it.. if you like each other.. be open minded, get beyond all that subconcious programming that was installed into us from the caveman era and societies norms, and go for it! | |

My forst real byf was a good couple of inches shorter than me and must say it doesnt really bother me although my preference would be tall dark and handsome

I have dated men a little shorter than me but it is nice if they are taller. I recently saw a photo of my grandparents and noticed that my gran was head and shoulders taller than my grandad - I never noticed when they were alive. | |

Actually no, I must confess, I dont know any woman taller than me...not even close if I am honest.
I always advise a lady ,if we agree to meet for a first time that she can wear flats,heels even stilts at a push and feel comfortable with the height thing if it is an issue.
I have dated women ranging from 4ft 11 to 6ft in the past.
I can't even remember 5ft 5 if I am honest...may have been 3rd year juniors?
It must be a very difficult thing to have to deal with if a man is not being dated because of his lack of inches and I do fully sympathise.
I have experienced it from the other end of the spectrum where I have been deemed too tall to date. | |

my son who will be 15 in December is 6ft 7in and still growing,he has a lovely g/f who is my height and they used to get picked on at school about it,but now they have been together a few months it has died down,such a shame it has to come to that just because of height | |

Posted: 7/12/2007 7:04:13 AM | well last time i dated a woman taller than me she was about 3 or 4 inches taller than me and that was when i was 13... i was about 5'4 back then and she was a couple of years older than me. It didn't change anything back then but obviously she dumped me for a unknown reason by me. Could've possibly been my height who knows.
It could just be the fact that we're so used to seeing women with taller bigger men that when we see a taller woman with a smaller guy, it just looks silly because he's supposed to be the "bread winner" and the "big strong protector" that all women are supposedly supposed to admire.
But since then when i started to get into the 6ft range i kept being denied being dated because 1 was "too tall"... now i'm 6'5 and i still getthe odd few "your too tall" comments but when i do meet someone, they expect me to be tall... but then find out that i'm alot taller than what i look like in my pictures. For instance i went to meet 1 friend from a messenger and she told me after i met her that my height scared her, she thought i looked intimidating. Now i have no idea what so ever how she came to that conclusion but i did tell her well in advance that i will tower over her.
So yeah... i might make a thread about why women dont date very tall guys and their real excuses... anyone interested in me making that?

Actually, I don't feel attracted to guys shorter than me, simply as I would have an issue stooping down to kiss someone. Im 5ft 6 in but usually in 2/3 in heels, so i end up towering over people. | |

I for one have been accused in the past of having too many inches to date.... unfortunately my size can intimidate some woman..even had a lady from this site say that because I was 6ft 7 she couldn't possibly date/meet me because her previous partner was very tall and she remembers the beatings she got from him, despite I might add, her approaching me initially to chat.
I am a gentle giant(as anyone who knows me could confirm) and felt hurt that she could tar all large people with the same brush.
She said that she thought I may have entered my height at 6ft 7 by mistake. | |

Cripes! and I thought my eldest lad was tall! (6ft 3" at 16yo and still growing too lol). His g/f is only 5ft 6" as well.
Going to be the same with my other two, daughter whose 10yo is only 4 inches shorter than me and my 8yo son is not far behind her! Am beginning to feel like the shrimp in the family around here | |
