| The "Profession" Mystery Posted: 7/12/2007 9:03:56 PM | | I am curious about the people who put "prefer not to say" when it asks for their profession in the profile. To me it means one of 3 things: l) They have a high profile job and they don't want to attract any gold diggers. OR 2) They are unemployed. OR 3) They have a job that they are ashamed of. Am I on the right track or are there some other reasons that I haven't thought of? What do you think? | |
|
| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/12/2007 9:21:30 PM | Looks like you're on the mark, but there are other reasons......
4) People want someone to be attracted to them for who they are and not what they do. ---> Most likely the #1 reason.......
5) Some people don't want to be swarmed after by favour/advice seekers
i.e: Those who are in IT, Nurses, Plumbers, Electricians, Doctors, Lawyers, etc...
If someone were to ask me right away, I'd be instantly turned off........

| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/12/2007 9:22:09 PM | | jcee, There are other options beyond those that you've listed, but I'd say that you're not too far afield for those that you've mentioned for most likely. I list what I do because I've been deemed as such for a profession that's again lost any sense of honor to me due to the politics that have sadly taken deeper root than should be in the education of young children. I'm about to raise a 'right stink' for this. | |

| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/12/2007 9:28:40 PM | Go back to thinking.
-Give us a 6 page thesis on it after 8 months of pontification. (single lined, each side of the page please) -illustrations are acceptable if they are original. -cover pages and index would be appreciated.
...finally....who the hell cares until you've established some kind of communication/connection?
Unless they are a serial killer, would you really give a rats behind if they were a ditch digger or a lawyer (ok..bad choice there)....or clerk or doctor or bank manager? (don't get me started on insurance types though!!!)
Are you going to turn down THE one if their profession/what they do ISN'T up there?
You're welcome! Aren't you glad I can't sleep tonite OP?

***EDIT***
<div class='quote'>5) Some people don't want to be swarmed after by favour/advice seekers

....good point "too many"
***DOUBLE EDIT***
This from someone who lists themself as being a "professional"!!! That means.....WHAT??? .....scuse me whilst I introduce the pot to the kettle.
K....I'm done. | |

| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/12/2007 9:33:31 PM | Or they could be disabled/on disability and not want to say that and live with the stigma associated with people on that...
I had nothing/prefer not to say on for awhile...then I said **** it, and just put down that I'm disabled.
I quit caring about living with the stigma. I've realized if people carry this type of stigma, then I want nothing to do with them, and they shouldn't bother contacting me.

| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/12/2007 9:49:52 PM | Peter 52245 Thanks Peter. That is a reason that I had never thought of. I guess I sometimes tend to think that they might be doing something sleezy or illegal and have something to hide. Your situation is definitely none of these. Hang in there and thanks for your reply. | |

To me it means one of 3 things: 1. If I don't know you, it's none of your business?
2. It requires an education, and I don't want to be hounded to the ends of the Earth by lazy assed people who aren't motivated enough to do their own homework, and who won't tend to their own studies.
3. If I list anything as a profession, it's a spoof to keep the nosey people, and the paranoid conspiracy people, guessing.

|
| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/12/2007 11:10:05 PM | | I just don't list it because it's nobody's ****ing business what I do, especially when they don't know me. | |

| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/13/2007 1:17:01 AM | Because people are stupid, to answer simplistically.
I don't have a glamorous job. I work in the "hospitality" industry. But I don't want to be generalized, and have someone come to a conclusion about who and what I am.
Most people I work with don't understand why a guy like me has the job I do. They don't look at everything about the job the same way I do.
1) It pays well for the actual work involved; it has relatively low stress compared to other positions available at my workplace for the pay I get.
2) It's a somewhat undesirable position to other people, so I get reliable and decent hours/pay each week (living at home right now until I'm in and done college, so expenses aren't that much)
3) Because of my maturity (I work with a lot of high school kids) I get respected at work for doing an otherwise less respected job, because I still treat my job seriously.
But back to the original topic, I also agree with what all the other posters have said.

6) Live somewhere where everybody knows everybody
7) Wish to avoid online encounters with co-workers who have made advances before
8) Plan on changing jobs soon

| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/13/2007 8:34:05 AM | You know, I have been thinking about changing my profile to say "prefer not to say" As, my job comes with a stigmata, and the expectations, neither of witch I really like.
Golddiggers abound, and the girls that I would like to attract are turned off.
Such as, typically guys in my profession or field dont really get alot of time at home, and to be honest I dont either a whole hell of alot. But, I am at home alot more than most guys that are involved in the oilfield.
But, I do love it when I get asked how much I make. Way to make it perfectly clear what your after, and im gone. I just typically respond "Enough that I dont need to buy girls" and stop corraspondance with them.

| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/13/2007 11:37:42 AM | | For me it's a "none of your business" issue. I probably wouldn't have much compatibility anyway with pushy, nosy women who want extensive personal information to be posted on a relatively unsecure public website. | |
|
| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/13/2007 11:59:19 AM | Here are just a few examples from my friends and myself:
Mortician - Ughhhh you can't believe the kind of emails he gets.
Investor - What kind of investments? How does that work? Let me know if you hear of any good deals. How can I get into that?
Attorney - What kind of attorney? Hey, who are the famous people you've represented? My brother is in trouble, what can he do? How can you represent rapists and murderers?
Physician - What kind of doctor? I've never heard of that, what is it? My Mother has a ????? (totally unrelated field), what do you think she should do?
If the person becomes someone significant in our lives, we are always happy to discuss our work, otherwise, it's a waste of time and energy to try and explain what has required years and years of education and experience to someone in a few minutes.

About five years ago I met a woman and after a few dates she told me she could not see me further because she did not respect what I did for a living. What do I do that is so wanting of respect? I work as an analyst for a firm involved in tax reporting. Terrible isnt it.

| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/13/2007 12:33:19 PM | | I think it has something to do with national security... next time the threat level goes to orange, i'll have to take a look and see if more 'prefer not to say' pops up | |
|
| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/13/2007 12:45:22 PM | | OP, I don't put mine on there because 1) it's a pretty long title, and 2) unless one is pretty familiar with software development, validation, and worldwide regulations, I'd have to go into a whole long description of it in my profile for it to make much sense. It's easier just to explain it to those that I actually end up talking with on the phone. | |
|
| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/13/2007 1:01:20 PM | I was sarcastic in mine :)
What I drive or if I own or rent... if those are questions I get when I first meet you and chat... then I probably won't be going on any dates with you.
The type of work question is ok... but I'm a carpenter by choice for the most part... golddiggers wont be chasing me around and I prefer it that way.
I used to have a nice desk job in engineering... I gave it up for more free time and flexibility for myself, free tanning and a daily workout lugging heavy lumber in the hot sun... fringe benefits to die for!

| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/13/2007 4:16:47 PM | | I posted what i do. Not where, and not for who. Those questions i would answer during a meeting and or date. I do not need any head cases out there bugging me at work. I can not accept calls where i work unless it is an emergency. And we also have a no cell phone policy. Which is fine by me. I am there to work, not chat all day. | |

I could put fracturing down, but most people wouldnt have the foggiest of clues as to what the hell that was. Then, id have to explain....
"What is fracturing" "In a nutshell?" "Yea.." "Tight-hole stimulating"
Can we see how this conversation really isnt a good one to have right off the bat?

| The Profession Mystery Posted: 7/14/2007 11:25:31 AM | I agree with Paz. My profession field is blank due to the following experience: CPA = requests for free tax returns, set up a business and other things that CPAs charge $150 to $250 an hour for. And the assumption that I have a boring personality, those aren't my photos and that I'm here seeking a sugar baby Homer Simpson (dream on). Law = requests (even suggested first dates) for legal advice, letter writing, court appearance, divorce proceedings (wtf?!) and other things lawyers charge $150 an hour for. And the assumption that I am bitterly argumentative, and again, the Homer dream. Tax Law = It's true: an uncomfortable intimacy with 54,000 pages of tax code, not including state. BTW they charge $350 an hour. Lots of emails on bankruptcy, offshore accounts or some sketchy situations that sounded like white collar crime. And the assumption that I am very boring, bitterly argumentative, and secretly wish for an entire luxury island of Homers. Model or anything in the e-biz = the assumption that I wait or dance on tables, that I have an interest in porn, that I can get them into the biz, or those aren't my photos and I'm lying. Aerospace = the ONLY career in aerospace, apparently, is as an astronaut (sarcasm). Over time, this is the most offensive. http://www.nasa.gov/centers/kennedy/about/information/astronaut_faq.html#4 At my age, even years after I've left that field, I'm still too young for it to even be a possibility. There are references in my profile to these professions, but not filling in the profession field greatly cleared up most of the spam. | |
