Perform a Windows Vista Suicide by Pressing Just 2 Keys!!!

Windows Vista can be completely killed by pressing a simple combination of just two keys. All you need to crush Microsoft's latest operating system and put the much-applauded Wow at an end is two fingers. This issue has been reported independently of Microsoft, and the Redmond company has failed to issue any official comment at the time of this article. The immediate question which comes to mind is if the problem is a security vulnerability or a simple bug.

Either way, you too can watch Windows Vista die in front of your eyes. To make matters
worse, the key combination is one of the most utilized keyboard shortcuts in Windows. Pressing the Windows key together with "E" will start Computer in Windows Vista. Keeping the two keys pressed will open a large volume of Computer windows. Want to crush Windows Vista? Nothing could be simpler. Just keep the two keys pressed for more than 20 – 30 seconds.

The operating system will begin to behave aberrantly and will continue to open Computer instances flooding the desktop. There is no way to restore Vista to its normal self, outside of a reboot. With Computer windows cascading on your desktop, you will soon find that Task Manager cannot be accessed. The same is valid for additional processes. You will have to restart the operating system in order to restore Vista.

"It took millions of dollars to make Windows Vista secure and stable. While I am happy that Windows Vista is so much stable than Windows XP; there is a bullet proof way to crash WindowsVista. A simple service which loops a thousand times while sending Windows Key + E can be written within ten minutes. Microsoft may have spent millions of dollars for security and stability; it takes two fingers or a simple service to crash Windows Vista down. No matter how bullet proof Windows Vista claims to be, two keys to crash the operating system is a bullet proof approach as well," revealed the author of the crash method on TechTicles.

In its present form, the bug seems to create nothing more than a Denial of Service condition. It remains to be seen if it can be exploited remotely or if it permits code execution. Still, I’d put my money on a bug, rather than on a security vulnerability.

FYI, when I held the keys down for 2 - 3 seconds on my XP board. I opened up 76 instances of My Computer and it didn't crash, I would guess that 20 -30 seconds would open up 1000+ windows. Guess its hard to tell when comparing two pieces of crap, which is really a better piece of crap.

That really shouldn't be passed off as a vista problem, since it has existed since atleast XP and is probally older (too lazy to look it up). Windows problem in general... though very annoynig :)

I wouldn't call it a feature or a bug, when holding that type of command it executes it as fast as the keyboard reports. At worst its an oversight... an oversight that should be corrected but still an oversight.

Erm. thats a pretty pathetic bug to be badgering M$ with.

opening My Computer up causes explorer.exe to use an extra 1Mb of RAM on my computer, i have 512Mb installed, and in general (whilst running on just the desktop) 300Mb of that is free. the other 212 is taken up by general services etc required to keep things running.

Now, you consider how fast the system processes things, in 4 seconds, i can open 35 windows by holding down that key combo.. lets do some math? (on my system, they all still take roughly 1Mb each of RAM)

300 / 35 = 8 (rounded out, this means 8 lots of 35 windows can be opened in main memory)
8 x 4 = 32 (this shows that it takes 32 seconds to open 8 lots of 35 windows)

that equates to 280 My Computer windows, consuming every single bit of ram, its probably going to start struggling at around the 50 mark, as it is also consuming CPU power to get them open. Basically, who in there right mind NEEDS 280 file explorers open at a time?

... this is what happens when you push a computer to hard.

That's pretty cool...I just tried it...it's more fun than sending your Linux kernel into a panic

Since Win95A ... ALL MS 32/64 Bit OSs ... to have some real fun, why bother with the keyboard, create a REG Key under RunServices.

And while you are at it, there are far more annoying Things to call for than Shell Windows.

I don't see why people are doing a big deal out of it.

There is probably a way to limit the number of processes per user in Vista like it can be done in Linux/Unix. If not, then it would be a big problem of using Windows in multi-user (servers) context. I know how to do it for Linux/Unix, a Windows advanced user could explain how it's done on their favourite OS.

It's just that the limit for a home installation is either very high or unlimited by default -- which is actually reasonable. Apple with Mac OS X 10.2 put a 100 process limit per user by default -- which I hit easily when doing a software build. And changing the default is not what I would consider trivial for a non-tech user.

For a home system, there is not much need to set up limits on resources. If the bad guy has access to your computer to be able to run a script on your computer that start multiple processes, well, he had gain accessed to your computer for that... He could erase your files... He could still your personal information... Who cares if he can spawn hundreds of processes... that would be the least of my worries...

For a multi-user system (mainframe, development server, etc.), then you don't want one user to bring the system down (either purposely or by mistake...). So, you usually don't want to have things unlimited.

After Pressing Windows key and "E", and having all of the windows pop up you could release and hold alt-F4 untill all of the windows close.
