| what is the greatest rivary off all sports/ 5 commandments of winners and losers Posted: 7/16/2007 7:46:00 PM | I agree with boston and yankees being a great rivalry, great games to watch that is for sure......but i think it loses some of its luster with the wild card in baseball...I mean, usually yankees and boston both make the playoffs, so them playing eachother during the season means less...unless they play in the playoffs....
now, the yankees are bad this year, so its really watered down...here are my top rivalries....
1. duke/nc college bball 2. auburn/alabama college fball 3 michigan/ohio state college fball 4. army/navy
those are not in order by the way....i think army /navy is top rivalry in all of sports, now that the US is at war, i think it has more meaning than usuall...they want to beat up eachother on the football field, then they probably will be side by side in a war....

| what is the greatest rivary off all sports/ 5 commandments of winners and losers Posted: 7/17/2007 6:27:04 AM | I think there are better rivalries in college football than anywhere else. 1 game a year between the teams...and the winner gets an entire year of bragging rights while the loser has to sit and fume.
Just to name a few: Auburn/Alabama (the entire SEC really) OSU/Michigan Army/Navy Texas/Oklahoma
There are your usual rivalries in MLB but they aren't as "important." Sure the Sox and Yankees hate each other, but there aren't too many seasons where they are both seriously contending for the playoffs...(sorry, the Yankees aren't going to do it this year). And of course these MLB rivalries play several series so it's not like each game matters.

| what is the greatest rivary off all sports/ 5 commandments of winners and losers Posted: 7/17/2007 10:01:21 AM | Wow ... great rivalries in sport? There are so-o-o-o many. I suppose it depends on where in the world you live, as the 'fan base' for any particular team is usually fairly-well localized. In world soccer, most of the great ones are outside North America ... Argentina-Brazil ... across the pond, Europe is full of them ... AC Milan and Inter, any London-based team against any other, Celtic-Rangers to the north. Over here in North America, American-style football is huge, especially college ... Army-Navy, Michigan-Ohio, there's so many. The NFL also has huge ones ... Giants-Skins, probably Indy-New England soon. Hockey is big in my country (Canada), Montreal-Toronto being one of the best over the years ... also Edmonton-Calgary. All four of these teams play at a different level when they play each other. In my little tiny corner of the world it is Canadian-style football, with the rivalry being the Hamilton (my town)-Toronto (their town). The Labour Day game (first weekend in September) unites both towns in a quest to beat the other. If one of these teams only wins once all year (sigh!), if it's against the other team, the year is salvaged. And who can dismiss the Yankees-Red Sox in baseball, Senna-Prost in Formula 1 racing, Ali-Foreman in boxing and even Pakistan-Sri Lanka in cricket.
Sports rivalries ?? ... I love 'em. And I have my tickets for the Hamilton-Toronto Labour Day game. How could I come from Hamilton and miss that ??

| what is the greatest rivary off all sports/ 5 commandments of winners and losers Posted: 7/17/2007 10:34:49 AM | | e makes a good point on the army /navy game. though meaningless for many years in the realm of "big time" college football. the last few years i find it to be the most compelling game of the year with all that it means to the guys that play it. at those schools some of those guys graduate to die. while at "pinhead tech" the big worry is "who is gonna bail me out when i wreck my booster paid for car, while running from the police, who want to know why i broke into my girlfriends dorm and beat the hell out of her" ah.... i'm getting down off of my soap box before my blood pressure rises. | |

well...let me kind of continue it....
lets not forget, those kids have school loads that people at "pinhead tech" cant even fathom...along with being in the military...along with football practice....
I like to see these U of miami linebackers that beat there girlfriends, shoot people, take some of the classes those military kids take.....of course...they do take "arts and crafts"...im sure it compares to what some navy kid is taking to fly and f-18 one day.....

it seems to me the smart kids are the ones driving the cars...
I dont understand this comment.....are you saying they are smarter to go to u of miami, get drafted and get paid millions?...rather than going to military school?
just to let you know....a navy or army officer isnt starving by any means, no they dont make millions that nfl players are making...but i have an uncle who is a lt in the navy...he does very well for himself.....
and are yo utelling me there are no discipline problems in the us military? read the ****in' newspapers
im sure there are..hell i was active navy for 4 years...i was in trouble a lot....
but are we really gonna compare what goes on at lets say U of maimi?....and United States Navel Academy?
oh...and the football game you guys are crying about is ummmmm boring
usually both teams are not very good.....as military academys dont recurit for football or any sports for that matter, you have to volunteer to join a military academy.....
all im saying is...put it in perspective....we are talking about two academys who hate eachother on the football field...and maybe one of those same guys they "hate" might have to save there life one day.....
im biased...served in the military....so i have respect for ANYONE who signs there name on a dotted line to go in to military....

| what is the greatest rivary off all sports/ 5 commandments of winners and losers Posted: 7/17/2007 11:47:11 AM | | i don't think the game is boring if you just look at it as a football game period. of course, there are none of the bowl implications and heisman watches that are thrown at us every saturday. but the rivalry is every bit as intense. maybe i'm just more aware of it since these guys have been active. | |

| what is the greatest rivary off all sports/ 5 commandments of winners and losers Posted: 7/17/2007 12:05:43 PM | i did not mean to be disrespectful -we have a military in canada and my grandfather died in the second world war
but why hold up miami u as the standard for scholarship schools? why not notre dame? or wisconsin? or cal?
and filthy i have seen the pomp and crap that surrounds this "rivalry" it is way more over blown than nd vs. michigan ever was or usc vs. ucla
you would think the future of the free world is at stake and all those commercials during the game---who are they for? lower class kids to become grunts thats who...

| what is the greatest rivary off all sports/ 5 commandments of winners and losers Posted: 7/17/2007 12:23:48 PM | | while you maybe right about goats and mules and what not. i seem to hear about fla./ fla st. and the like about 3-4 weeks before they play. and i also think it is a rivalry of a different sort because it is , being military schools, kind of a "closed society" for lack of a better term. ( i'm sure there is another way of wording that). maybe its just me feeling a bit patriotic and i buy into. but i know that i never watched the game with as much interest until we went to "war". hey what happened to "crappy north american sports"? | |

| what is the greatest rivary off all sports/ 5 commandments of winners and losers Posted: 11/20/2007 7:53:26 AM | Currently the Pats & Colts are one of the more entertaining rivalries going. But IMO, far, far, far, far from one of the greatest. When the rivalry has passed through generations of fans and players like Bears/Packers, Sox/Yankees, Giants/Dodgers etc....then it can be considered.
What makes a rivarly is the test of time. If the Colts/Pats Rivalry is still there after Brady & Manning are both gone, then maybe it can be considered as one of the greatest

Rivalries are legendary. You can't take that away with a season record or postseason performance.
The Colts and the Pats is a new fashioned thing (this year especially, or from the semi final last year if you want to stretch it). Its "good" in that they're both strong teams and the games are good to watch. That will change as the seasons change.
Red Sox and Yankees. Nothing compares. Nothing is longer, stronger or more virulent.
I will agree that the Celtic/Rangers (glasgow) history has its own colorful history!! VERY colorful. Maybe too much so.
