| Michael Vick Posted: 7/17/2007 8:54:53 PM | A federal grand jury on Tuesday indicted Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick for his alleged role in a well-established dogfighting operation in Virginia where breeders fought pit bulls for purses as high as $26,000 and some losing dogs were electrocuted, drowned, hanged or shot to death.
The National Football League, where Vick is one of the highest-paid players, called the activities alleged in the indictment "cruel, degrading and illegal."
The grand jury charged that the dogs were trained, housed and fought at specifically designed locations on Vick's Surry County property -- five shelters, including a two-story garage sit in a wooded area behind a white brick, two-story estate home.
Will a popular quarterback in the NFL get off or is this the end of Vicks career?
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/17/2007 9:38:40 PM | This is shocking news about a star NFL quarterback. I read Vick says it was his relatives running the operation on his property.
I say you better get a good lawyer
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/17/2007 9:42:35 PM | | I'm curious to see how Roger Goodell handles this one. He'd better have the b a l l s to treat Vick the same way he has treated the other players who have given the league a black eye with their off-field antics. Then again, no one came to the ball park to see Tank Johnson or Pacman Jones. Now it's a marquée player (no matter how overrated he is). | |
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 7:49:56 AM | Goodell already is leaning towards sitting Vick for a huge chunk of time as sort of a "time-out" since a trial wouldn't happen till after the next season anyway. Vick could plead guilty and obviously would be suspended from the NFL for the year probably.
Luckily the Falcons still have Schaub who could be a starter on another team so they should be fine.
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 8:53:22 AM | | matt schaub plays for the texans. joey harrington is the back up in atlanta. | |
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 8:58:09 AM | When did that trade happen?
Well in that case the Falcons are screwed because Harrington is awful.
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 9:34:54 AM | What a surprise, I thought he was all that, has any one seen how vicious these dog fights are? did you see the size of the ring these dogs fight in.
Its amazing how a human can do such a thing for our own gratification, most animal lovers treat their pet as family, why doen't vick put his children in the ring with a pit bull.
I think vick should be kicked out of the nfl untill he recieves some (lots) counselling, u can forget this year vick, as i was once your fan, nowi am completly embarassed with your poor judgement.
There are 3 things lower than what u just had done.
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 9:43:00 AM | A whole lot of players should be kicked out for life. Tank Johnson was caught with illegal automatic rifles in his car, Pacman Jones continues to show he is scum, and basically most of the Bengals offense should be in prison. Oh and don't forget Jamal Lewis who plead guilty to distributing cocaine, but was allowed to play football and serve his sentence after the season!
What a luxury it must be to deal cocaine, get caught, and have the authorities let you play out your season so you make your millions of dollars before you goto prison!
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 10:01:04 AM | | it was in march. they swapped 1st round picks with texas and gave up schuab for next years 2nd rounder from houston and the in april the falcons signed harrington. they have 4 qbs on the roster and are reportedly considering culpepper who was released yesterday from the dolphins. i know it's tough to keep up with all of the moves. | |
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 10:07:30 AM | Rookie commissioner Roger Goodell sent a strong message: This is not going to be the Duke lacrosse case. The NFL is not going to preemptively strike against a player with a relatively clean slate, as Vick has. And to those who want Goodell to take Vick off the field for 2007, such as the Humane Society of United States, the league is in full agreement that the allegations are grievous ones. But Vick hasn't had 10 run-ins with the law, like Pacman Jones. He hasn't been arrested as many times as Chris Henry. So Goodell is not going to ban him from the game. But make no mistake about this: Goodell will act swiftly and severely if Vick is found guilty on any of the charges.
Vick has had past problems from what i can remember
He knowingly passed herpes simplex 2 to a female he had sex with and was sued and eventually settled. Can you trust a guy who admits he gave you a STD.
In Jan. 2007 Miami police are investigating NFL star Michael Vick after airport screeners yesterday seized a water bottle from him at a security checkpoint and later discovered that the bottle included a "concealed compartment" that appeared to contain a small amount of marijuana.
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 10:10:15 AM | | this vick thing is not going to be swept under the rug and this is not some state or county prosecutor going after him. this is a federal indictment and those guys usually have all of their "i's" dotted and their "t's" crossed. so they have some damning evidence to bring to the table i'd bet. when i hear about the way they dispossed of those dogs.....it wasn't that they put the dogs down it was the ways they did it. early word seems to be that vick was an active participant in killing them. the falcons released a statement today on the matter. they couldn't do it yesterday because the owner was not back yet from a safari. is irony the right word for that? | |
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 10:13:41 AM | | The Feds are also saying that Vick has been involved with this the past 6 years, its not just a recent one time incident. | |
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 10:20:57 AM | Vick will no doubt reach some deal with the Feds just like Jamal Lewis did when the evidence was stacked against him. Vick has witnesses ready to testify against him if it goes to trial so I doubt he would want to risk heavy prison time.
Vick will probably drag out the investigation and plead guilty at the end of the football season so he still makes his millions of dollars that he will need for lawyer costs.
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 10:46:56 AM | | It's a lose lose situation if you look at it from a business persepctive. Either way, I wouldn't mind seeing the guy get fined half his contract. | |
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 11:00:42 AM | | Vick and the others like him prove the point that you can take the kid out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the kid. | |
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 11:21:06 AM | | it's still early in the game but as far as making a deal goes. vick appears to have been the ring leader. so my guess is someone else is going to get the deal. | |
|

I think you're way off. The only touchdowns he'll ever experience again will be in a prison shower.

| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 2:41:23 PM | "I think you're way off. The only touchdowns he'll ever experience again will be in a prison shower."
And it won't be playing the QB position, he'll be playing the tight end.
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 4:55:14 PM | The moment he flipped those fans off as he was walking out of the stadium, he lost all of my respect. He showed what a true ass he is. Being booed is part of the game.
His reaction to all this today has been one of arrogance. As an animal rights activist and huge football fan, i can tell you this. If he is allowed to play, PETA and the Humane Society of the US will call out its forces to picket at every game he plays in.
The news reports said this operation has been under investigation for seven years. These federal and local agents must go deep undercover to break up these secretive operations, so I doubt this is all false information or charges, whatever. They said he was the one giving orders to kill dogs who didn't want to fight or perform well.
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 5:27:43 PM | "They said he was the one giving orders to kill dogs who didn't want to fight or perform well. "
Good thing for Michael Vick that his coaches aren't of the same mindset as him. He'd have been plugged halfway through his sophomore season
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 6:49:22 PM | Ya can't put a rich man in jail!!
I doubt his lawyers are gonna fail on this one. The question is whether he is going to be suspended or released from the team. You would think if Pacman Jones who didn't even commit a real crime would get suspended for a year, then Vick is out indefinately. ...but Pacmans case is different considering he gets into trouble ALL the time.
Jail time is doubtful, for a man who has that much money...there still isn't enough evidence because theres no video tape of him handling the dogs.
As for the Falcons....I really don't know what they should do, they could act now and maybe get their money back and sign maybe Culpepper....lol. I don't know cause Matt Shaub can't be their starter with that OL.
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 6:55:56 PM | | matt schaub is in texas. and they have evidence or they would not indicte him. i think this guy is gonna do some time for this shit. if they spent seven years investigating this then somebody is going away. | |
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 6:57:24 PM | | I didn't know about Matt Shaub either. Joey Harrington can NEVER land on a good team even though he is a talented QB. Harrington definately can't play on that OL. | |
|
| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 7:37:08 PM | i think he's going to do some hard time as well.
They touched on this last nite on Sportsnets talk show and they interviewed the undercover guy with garbled voice and blacked-out face who said Vick was THE major player here. Vick's trying to act like he knew nothing of what was going on at the house that he owned, but the undercover guy is saying that that's totally bogus.
Also he's really done it now because of all people he's got Al Sharpton on his tail
Conviction carries up to six years in prison, fines of US$350,000 and restitution... ...In a letter to Goodell, Falcons owner Arthur Blank and Vick's corporate sponsors, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and the Rev. Al Sharpton joined with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Humane Society of the United States in calling for strong stands against animal cruelty.
"Today, we sound a clarion call to all people: Stand up for what is right, and speak out against what is wrong. Dogfighting is unacceptable. Hurting animals for human pleasure or gain is despicable. Cruelty is just plain wrong," the letter said.

| Michael Vick Posted: 7/18/2007 7:57:40 PM | As National Football League officials met yesterday to discuss his situation, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick learned that the federal indictment charging him with sponsoring a dogfighting operation will keep him away from football for at least one day. When his teammates gather next Thursday for the first day of training camp, Vick will be in a Richmond, Va., courtroom, where he is scheduled to appear at a bond hearing and an arraignment on charges that could send him to prison.
Sounds like Vick might only miss 1 day of training camp.
What no suspensions for NFL quarterbacks
