The Harry Potter series--new movie, last book
Posted: 7/20/2007 8:20:47 AM
With all the press surrounding both the latest Harry Potter film AND new book coming out, I'm wondering if anyone else is paying attention. One of my relatives is reading the series now and she's excited but saddened by the last book coming out. I myself have never read the books but L-O-V-E the movies. But now it's finally come to an end. The whole enchildada is being revealed.

I guess my main thoughts are on"

1.) The last book--anybody waiting for the midnight release? (or if you already have the book by the time you read this, was it worth the wait?)
And what's with all of the hoopla surrounding the so-called "spoilers" that came out before the book? Does it (or did it) really matter that much?

2.) The controversy--there are a few (mostly conservative fundamental religious) groups who are trying to get the books banned from school libraries because they feel the book somehow encourages Satanism and witchcraft. Does anyone actually believe that?

3.) The movies--obviously never as good as the books, but is there anyone who got into the series based on the films alone? I myself am a huge fantasy film fan, so I'll go see almost anything with fantastical elements in it.

And last of all....is anyone just really sick of all the press coverage, think it's overblown, and just want it to go away?

Discuss and debate.

righty-o then:
1: Yes, I actually am waiting in line for the midnight release (laughs at self) my two best friends love the book, and pre-ordered copies for themselves and I at the local bookstore. Never actually waited in line for anything in my life, but i figure what the hell, why not? Sitting with a couple lawn chairs, a cooler of beer, and my two best friends for four hours sounds like a fun Friday night to me :P

2: Anyone who doesn't understand that fictional books are FICTION should pull their head out of their butt and start worrying about things that really matter. In no way shape or form should entertaining reads be banned because some people have trouble using their imaginations.

Realistically, as the Harry Potter books have inspired more kids to read than any other book lately, I think they're fantastic. Anything that inspires children to broaden their vocabulary, critical thinking skills, and imagination is a great thing.

3: the movies are never as good, sadly. But the last one to come out wasn't that bad actually.

Oh, and as far as spoilers go..my roomate works at a place where they are stocking the book for release tomorrow..he (jokingly) threatened to read the last chapter and come home and tell me who dies. I told him if he did he'd probably never have children :P

1) no wont be waiting in line at midnight (Tminus 7hr & 21min) but will be making my way to the local bookstore in the morining to pick up my copy. Yeah a think spoliers can be a bad thing (tho i hav avoided them all) the book has been a long time coming and well we should al be alowed to read it with out some muppet spoliing the ending.

2) These people should get real, how many kids out there are reading books with over 700 pages becasue of JK Rowling?

3) films can negver compete with the writen word, having said that i did see the first film first and this was what made me what to read the books. the first two films are the most true to the books and the third was a brave atempt at re inventing the world. the loss of Richard Harris as dumbledoor was very sad a major blow, who for me was the perfect actor for dumbledoor, mchael gambon was always going to struggle with the role.

finaly
its a major event there is always going to be lots of press, a new film and the last book within ten days of each other.

my question would be when was the last time a book got this much attention?

I pre-ordered my copy of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" from Amazon, so (hopefully) I will be receiving it sometime on Saturday morning. I've never been to a Harry Potter book-release party before, and, since this will be my last opportunity, I'm considering going to one tonight.

I can bet that none of the people who protest against Harry Potter, saying that it's witchcraft, have even read a page of any of the books. If they had, then they would know that Harry and his friends are actually Christians--they celebrate Christmas, Harry has a godfather, etc.

My mother and brother, who loved the Harry Potter books, dragged me along to see the first movie ("Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone") with them, and, to my surprise, I loved it! I immediately devoured their copies of the first two or three books. I've been a Harry Potter fan ever since, and I'm not ashamed to say it, either.

I actually loved the third film the best; I knew the first two stuck closely to the books, which was fine, but they did drag a little in the middle. I think Chris Columbus was too concerned with pleasing the fans than he was with making his own vision. Alfonso Cuaron, on the other hand, did use the book but added his own elements to it--he made the third movie more about the characters--how they were feeling, what they were going through---and less about the special effects or the magical world around them.

Plus Gary Oldman was in the third film. And I loooooove him. So that definitely brought it up a notch.

I liked "Goblet of Fire" as well, but I found "Order of the Phoenix" to be a little lacking. The writing wasn't as tight as the first three. But that could be because they had a different writer.

Also, the thing about the spoilers...I read somewhere that some guy was posting what he said was "the real ending" to book 7 because he was instructed to do so by Pope Benedict, to discourage people from reading it because the book was about witchcraft. I guess Benedict had said something to that effect a while back (Before he became pope, I think).
LMFAO

I'm Catholic, and even I don't get THAT reasoning.......

EDIT: I see someone has voted to delete this thread because it's "redundant." I did a thread search before I posted it. I don't think this subject's been brought up in a while, unless you count the people on another thread who were asking opinions about what they think will happen in the last book (and I never asked that).

thye are having a book party starting at 9 PM tonight at a mall in Quebec City. It runs till midnight, when the pre-ordered books will start to be distributed. They will have a couple plays (based on Potter) other books for sale, all kinds of food to try (Halloween recipe stuff, like lumberjack fingers and beetle crunch delight). Usual kiosks selling anything and everything involving Potter or magician stuff. They expect about a thousand people will show up.

Witchcraft? I thought it was magic! There is a bit of difference. Many biblical kings had magicians in their courts including David and Soloman. It isn't as if the church never had anything to do with magicians ober the course of history. They just don't like the idea of anyone horning in to, what they consider, their territory. Magic doesn't exist because only god and christ can perform miracles. Ummm...one mans "miracle" is another mans science.

Oh...the last book....Harry dies. There...I said it. They have a bunch of mental health services people standing by to help kids get over the shock (in Britain). Guess a touch of reality is gonna hit a lot of people. People die, things do not always turn out the way we want them to, and life can suck. Have a nice day!

Movies....I have heard that this movie coming out is not as big on the special effects...like the paintings moving in the background, etc, that really fired my imagination when I first saw the original. I was impressed. It seems this movie could well have been made by taking clippings off the editing room floor and taped together with a few minutes of original film just to "fill in the blanks". But hey....I won't judge till I've seen it myself in a year or two when it comes out on video. (I'm patient...don't need to rush out and be one of the first to see something. Can't afford the night out anyways!)

I am looking forward to the last book but sadly I was terribly disappointed in the last film. I don't want to give it away to those who haven't seen it but it was just such a let down from all we have seeen in the previous ones..... last movie my son ( who was 14 at the time) said that the only thing wrong with it was that it was too short! ( Sign of a great movie if you are THAT involved!) This latest one, I found myself looking at my watch several times. SIGH.

Been a great run. Look forward to more books from Ms Rowling.

I went to see the movie yesterday with a friend who's a big Harry Potter fan.
She gave up on it after 2 hours and we walked out.
I've never read any of the books, but I would hope they are better than this last movie.

the film glossed over several of the most important points in the novel ~ barely mentioning trelawney's role in the prophecy, harry's relationship with the snake and luna's information.

done properly, it should have comprised 2 separate films. instead, it attempted to condense way too much and lasted way too long anyway. as usual, the director overused special effects at the expense of plot.

The books cover an entire school year, so its a bit hard to condense them into a two and a half hour movie. I had no clue who Harry Potter was until the second movie came out, then a friend of mine bought me the books and I bought the dvd's. I looked forward to both the books and movies coming out. The only one that was a disappointment was Goblet of Fire and there is just no way they could have fit everything in the movie, but they did have trouble making the movie make sense.

I've read book 7 and won't spoil it for anyone. It is fairly good, but not what I expected. It successfully ended the HP saga, but I notice she did close with the possibility of their being more. It can end there with no problem, if she chooses to continue, its possible.

My little brother is 13 years younger than me, and got me totally hooked on the Harry Potter series when he was a kid and it first came out. At first, I was actually put off by all the hoopla and refused to see the first movie...but after reading a few chapters to him one night, it piqued my interest. I picked up the first book and did not stop reading until I had gone through his entire collection...I believe it was up to book 5 at the time. ( Order of the Phoenix, which was just released in theaters.) He and I actually bought The Half-Blood Prince at the same time, raced to finish it, and I beat him by 6 hours:-)
I am not ashamed to admit that I will be venturing out at midnight to pick up my copy of The Deathly Hollows.

Oh, and as far as the so-called "witchcraft" thing......
As previous posters have stated, the Harry Potter series is a work of FICTION. There are dozens of books on witchcraft and satanism in any bookstore. Any moron can easily distinguish between the two.
The fact that kids are picking up and reading an 800 page book in it's entirely should be cause to celebrate, not point fingers.

1) Not I. I did on book 6 (got to read a lot of DnD strategy books, that was fun!!), but this time we're getting it delivered on saturday morning.

2. Is there anybody that is trying to ban star wars? Because I mean, at least SW has its own cults... and a class on jedis at UCLA i believe it is lol.

3) It's been a while since i've read the books, so thankfully my mind is a little fuzzy on the details when i go to see the movies, thus i can enjoy them more :) That being said, as good as the 5th movie was, I think they could have easily added another hour to the film, made it 3 hours long, and added a lot of the extra content they skimmed over. The O.W.L. exams, the occlumency lessons with snape (this was the book that had the house elf collition, wasn't it?)

Scheherrazade, how did you get the whole book read already? 800 pages takes me 2 days...and pre-release? How did you manage that? Wow!

I am not standing in line, and sadly my copy won't arrive until next week...I ordered the audio version, and that doesn't have the priority that the hard back copy does... It should for the price though.... I find that I am getting far more listening done on my commute than I have time for actual reading.... :)

I hope everybody enjoys the last bit of Harry.... Have a great weekend... Careful of spoilers on Monday, cuz I can't read it..... whine....boo hoo...

Who gets killed in the end? Harry? You must have read a different book than I did.

Eques, I cheated. I have friend who owns a book store and they took delivery of them Wednesday night, but were not allowed to sell them until tonight at midnight. She gave me mine as a gifts, so technically did not break the rules of selling earlier than midnight. It was long, took me almost 16 hrs to read it.

Sweet deal! I am sure that someone, or somewhere will tell me the ending, and I may even go looking for it, but I can't wait for my cd's to be delivered next week.... Jim Dale has a great voice. :)

My estimate for me would have been around 17 hours or so.... Lovely way to spend a day.

I thought the last book was extremely entertaining. I did wait in line at Wal-mart and couldn't wait to get home and start reading it. I stayed up until 4 am reading and the only reason I stopped is because I was so tired before I got the book, I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. It really grabs your attention and I for one was not disappointed.

Okay, adding to my previous post. I got in line around 11, picked up my book by 12:30, went home, slept until five, where I woke up and finished the entire book by noon..Yep, I'm that much of a dork lol...
I really did like the book, but feel no remorse at it's ending. After all, this means I can finally go pick up Terry Goodkind's Phantom and keep on with my other favorite series :)

One of my friends gave me copies of the first two books. I think enough time has passed after the movie releases for me to finally start on some of them. So far, I've enjoyed what I'm reading.

I know what happens in book 7 because I called one of my friends on Saturday night and had him on the internet and google the plot synopsis for me. It took him 45 minutes to read the entire thing to me over the phone. It's nice to have friends who are as geeky as me.

It seems book 7 is pretty good, but I still think I'll wait until the film comes out (so I have another, what, three years or so?). I guess I don't want to be one of those people who has a checklist of what they left out and what they should have left in--I just want to enjoy the films as they are without all of those distractions.

To tell the truth, I'm more excited about the last "Dune" book coming out next month.

As for the films----I swear those kids are going to be collecting social security--or the British equivalent, if there is one--by the time they finish the movies.

Want to see the movie, haven't read the books but might since I enjoy reading. As for the people trying to ban the books from schools and all that I just think they should look at it from the POV that hey my kids are reading.

They are not sitting in front of a tv watching or playing video games, in front of the computer possibly putting themselves in harm's way of a predator or just doing nothing. They are excercing their minds and opening their imagination.

There is nothing more pathetic than the waste of perfectly good imagination especially in kids today. People need to realize that when a child is reading a book, they are doing so for the pure enjoyment of reading, not with the intent to learn about Satanism or anything negative.

The only people who are thinking that are the adults. They are the ones who are tarnish anything fun for kids these days?

Remember the Lion King....who in blazes would have guessed the word SEX was spelled out....not me, not any kids who saw it...only bored out of their minds fundamentalists with nothing better to do

Ok I'm done my rant, all I'm saying is can't people just enjoy the dang things wihout all the drama.....lol

Will fans flock to the theatres to attend the next 2 movies already knowing Harry's fate?
Will the last movie follow the storyline--or will Harry be spared by an alternate ending?

I am truly amazed by the Harry Potter phenomenom!
Have never seen children line up for hours looking forward to READING!
Plus all of the parties, events, and media coverage in celebration of a book. Unbelievable!

I loved all of the secrecy and anticipation leading up the book's release.
The 'spoilers' only added to the hype, especially since many of the early rumours were false.

The Toronto Sun revealed the book's secrets by printing them BACKWARDS causing both male and female breakfast customers to cluster around me in the ladies bathroom while I read the column aloud.

Hi Gonzofanmel:

I didn't wait for the midnight release--I'm past the stage where waiting in line is fun. I like to be served quickly and well. BUT I always read the whole book straight through--I can't help it I HAVE to know the ending lol

I am willing to bet if you read the books, you'd think much less of the movies. The books are as rich in details that cannot be fit timewise into the movies as Bill Gates is rich in money.

If the people bashing the books ever read them, they'd change their viewpoint. Harry is the most honorable, upstanding hero I've seen in a long time. I wish more people could share his values in real life!!

With each death in these novels, I've grieved for these fictionary characters almost as though they were real life friends. That may make me seem shallow, but I think it's a testament to how believable and lovable Rowling has made her characters. Hat's off to her!!

Nutt
