not sure what's going on....

For two weeks now, I was without sound on my pc. I couldn't hear cd's, my windows media player, or video clips from other websites, though it was obvious they were playing. Today I got frustrated by it (again) and plugged and unplugged the speakers just to see if the sound would work. It did!! And then, after four songs, my pc went mad....I could hear it gearing up as if it were running a virus scan (but it wasn't) , it got so noisy I was afraid it might explode...the sound didn't play at all, then eventually it played in patches. Whatever it was froze my system, and I had to use control, alt, delete to close Windows Media player in the programs window.

I had checked my speaker settings previously, making sure I hadn't muted them, making sure it was set to desktop speakers....

Could I be having some sort of conflict with my drivers? I have a logitech webcam whose audio driver wasn't compatible with my operating system (Windows XP), my ex had to download logitech's old driver for the sound on sightspeed to work, and even then the sound was patchy. ( I attributed this to the fact I have satellite internet) I also have RealPlayer installed, though to my knowledge it should not be the default player....I still don't trust RealPlayer since it's old background hidden, resource hogging former version.....

Any tips would be appreciated. Please keep in mind I'm not technically savvy, so please use layman's terms or I won't understand....

"gearing up as if it were running a virus scan"..

Im assuming you mean the harddrive was running a lot. This is probably caused by your harddrive being fragmented. And the fact that it didnt play and froze WMA means that its having trouble reading the file. This could be caused by fragmentation, or there is a bad spot on the harddrive.

If its not fragmented, then you are filling up your memory, and the harddrive is running like crazy reading and writing to and from the swap file. It could also cause your program to become unresponsive because it has to "wait" for its turn to read data from the harddrive.

I would do a scan for any kind of malware. Then do a defrag (Program Files->Accessories->System Tools)
