| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/22/2007 9:23:57 AM | After abdominal surgery my dog has no appetite. Several days, eating very little, if any. Tried the bland diet of boiled chicken, rice and baked potatoe but she just doesn't seem interested. It is almost as if she is nauseated. After eating grass threw up several times last night and also some blood. Wont eat this morning, vet isn't in and need to know what steps to take next at least until the vet comes in tomorrow. If you are a pet lover than you understand how worried i am, so if someone could help me out with this i would appreciate it....thanks. | |

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/22/2007 9:32:03 AM | | I'd be calling your vet ASAP. I'd be worried about caughing up the blood. Especially after surgery. My dog gets sick once in a while where all she does is eat grass and throw up some. But it usually clears up in a couple of days. Call your vet. | |

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/22/2007 1:26:58 PM | When was the sx? How old is she? What kind of sx? Normal upset can occur. Eating usually resumes within 24 hours, with small amounts until 48 hours post op. Has she drank any water? Have you tried to boil a little rice in low sodium chicken broth?
My best suggestion is to call the after hours emergency and see if you can speak with the vet or one on staff from that same clinic. Even just to talk with any vet to get their suggestions.
BTW - don't force her to eat, this can cause more stomach upset. The blood does not sound normal, I would be most concerned with that. Have you taken her temp? Is she dehydrated? Do you know how to check? Are her gums pink and moist? Does her skin retract back after pulling a handful up from between her shoulder blades? Is her incision normal looking? Not excessively red, swollen or have any discharge? Not hot to the touch?
Again, I would call after hours emergency. If you want to email me back, feel free. I used to work in a clinic.

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/22/2007 4:36:35 PM | I hope that she is doing ok, but the blood worries me. I would be most concerned about keeping her hydrated, but if she is vomiting blood, that is REALLY a concern, and I am not sure if syringing water into her would be ok, or a turkey baster, just to get some fluids into her. I would 2nd a call to the emergency vet. Dogs can go for days without food, but water is essential, and most animals need to drink every couple of hours.
Best wishes, and let us know how she is doing.

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/22/2007 9:06:15 PM | | Force the fluids to her if you can, while waiting on your vet. The old beef broth thing for humans holds true for dogs too. Get to your vet. | |

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/22/2007 10:49:56 PM | | I totally agree, biggest issue is to keep her hydrated.... go to emergency vet if you have one in area.... good luck, I'm praying for your companion. | |

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/23/2007 7:21:34 AM | Forcing fluids is not always the right thing to do. Especially a salty beef broth. I worked for vets and never have any of them suggested a beef broth. Low sodium chicken both is advised mostly.
But, if there is intestinal upset, forcing fluids can do more harm than good. Sometimes the gut needs a chance to rest and actually withholding fluids may be recommended.
Again, check with the vet before forcing or withholding. Glad it's Monday. Let us know how she's doing.

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/23/2007 1:04:09 PM | The best thing to do is use a small syringe (without needle of course) and keep her mouth moist. You don't have to force it down her throat, as long as her mouth gets moisture it will absorb enough until you can get her to the vet. As for the blood that is definately a bad sign, especially after abdominal surgery, so if your regular vet is not in take her to another one or take her to emergency. I know it is very costly, but if you love your pet as much as I love mine, the cost is worth it. throwing up blood could mean that some of her internal stitches have ruptured which would also have something to do with not eating. (it's like having an ulser for a human... VERY uncomfortable.) If there was no blood in the vomit I would suggest a little childrens' gravol for the nausia, I gave my dog some of that after she had her tubes tied because she wasn't feeling the greatest. I also gave her a little after she ate a lighter, a battery, and a pocket mirror (of couse this was after taking her to emergency for X-rays). It seems to help my senior dog with his appetite too. The chicken broth is a good idea too, even try giving her a little really watered down with no chicken or rice in it, just straight broth and water, sometimes the solid food aggravates it more.
Please let us know how she does though, it's always hard to hear about dogs suffering.

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/23/2007 4:29:02 PM | wazausername -- try searching a Pekingese Rescue with your state. You will find many resources! Better to adopt than to support breeders (who mostly - not all - but mostly), are BYB.
Good luck in your search.

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/23/2007 7:11:42 PM | | Thanks you guys for all your concern....and your posts. I did get a hold of the vet this morning and he wasn't all that concerned that she had threw up some blood. He did, however, give her something for nausea. She still doesn't seem that interested in food, but she is drinking alot more water. I have been giving her chicken broth with a dropper and i will talk to the vet that performed the surgery tomorrow. Thanks again you guys...This little ray of sunshine means the world to me. | |
|
| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/23/2007 7:31:47 PM | The blood the dog coughed up could have been residual blood from the surgery. Generally blood in the stomach will make an animal and humans sick.
It may take her a while to want to eat anything. Ask your vet if you could give your pet human baby food, the pureed stuff, and Pedialyte.

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/25/2007 7:39:20 PM | I'm so sorry you lost your baby, if mine died I could not make it, especially with all that's going on in my world right now. Was it from the surgery? If so you might have something aganist the Vet. I wish that I could put something here that I have it's called a Dogs Prayer just remember she will be there waiting for you someday and you both will be happier. Please beleive me when I say that I'm praying for you. | |

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/26/2007 11:24:09 AM | Passion, I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. You may want to have some words with your vet though. I know you said that when you got ahold of him/her they said that they weren't too concerned with the bleeding. I thought I'd read up on it in all of my self help veterinary books, and everyone one of them said CONSULT YOUR VETERINARIAN IF YOU SEE ANY BLOOD IN THE VOMIT! That is a tell-tale sign that there is something wrong in the intestines, stomach, or trachia, and because she had just had abdominal surgery that probably means that there were some problems with the internal stitches and they should have checked more thoroughly.
It is always really sad losing a family member like that. I know I'm still having a hard time with my old dog. I'm still trying to convince my mom that it's time to get the vet to come out and give him his shot (we can't take him to the vet cause he can't get in any of our vehicles) but she says she can't play god. and so you know that I'm not being heartless when it comes to puting him down, he's a 15 year old white shepherd/yellow lab cross, he has hip dysplatia and arthritis is his back legs to the point where I actually have to help him stand up, he's deaf and partially blind, has lost all control of all of his bowels, and has a lump the size of a rugby ball on his side. It's definately his time to go, eventhough it's going to be hard to let him go, I can't stand to watch him suffer anymore. I know I'm going to miss him, my mom has had him since I was 7 years old, but it's not fair to make him suffer like that just because she doesn't want to make the call. Anyways, that's my story about my old man ( as I call him).

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/26/2007 2:42:35 PM | So sorry she lost her battle.
My old lady dies Easter Sunday after 16 years. I know how you feel. Knowing she's in a better place is helpful, but it will still take time.
Just know that you gave her all your love and a good home and she will be waiting at the rainbow bridge for you.
Take care.
Thinking of you... | |

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/26/2007 5:38:42 PM | I am so sorry to hear that. I was really hoping she would be ok. It is soooo hard on us when we lose them. :(
Paws, I know what you are talking about. Of the 5 dogs (all old) that I have had put to sleep, I have felt awful. I can't even go in the vet office anymore without getting misty... Fortunately my current rottenweiler is only 5, so hopefully I will have a good long time before facing that again....
Passion, big {{{{HUGS}}}} to you.

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/26/2007 7:08:14 PM | | Thanks you guys for all your kind words. We had taken her to the vet for some more blood work on tuesday, but her kidneys were starting to fail and there really wasnt anything no one could do. She followed me to the door that morning and I felt so bad for leaving her, I wish i would have just stayed home with her. Her "dad" was here though, when she passed away, so she wasn't alone. She passed away about 30 minutes before i got home that evening and i hate it. I will never forget those little eyes staring back at me that morning, I told her to be good, "dad" would be home soon, i loved her and i would see her that evening. | |

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/27/2007 11:40:34 PM | | Your baby will always be with you in your heart and in your memories. Don't be ashamed to share the good times and your loss with others. I cry everytime I lose one of my 4 legged family members, and it usually takes a good year before I can be sure I won't cry when discussing them and what they brought to my life. Animals bring joy and enrichment to our world. We are so lucky our loving creator created them for our joy!! | |

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/28/2007 10:30:46 AM | A PET'S PRAYER
If it should be that I grow frail and weak And pain should keep me from my sleep Then you must do what must be done For this the last battle can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand Don't let your grief then stay your hand For this day, more than the rest Your love and freindship stand the test.
We've had so many happy years What is to come can hold no fears You'd not want me to suffer so When the time comes to let me go.
Take me to where my needs they'll tend Only stay with me till the end And hold me firm and speak to me Unitl my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you too will see It is a kindness you do to me Though my tail it's last has waved From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Don't grieve that is should be you Who has to decide this thing to do We've been so close we two these years Don't let your heart hold any tears.
Smile, for we've been together for a while.

| I need come help here from dog lovers Posted: 7/28/2007 10:48:55 AM | Missouri-gypsy, that is a very sweet poem, I was wondering if it would be ok if I printed that off for my mom? Maybe that will make puting our old guy down a little easier on her. I wont copy it until you say it's ok though so please let me know.... | |
