Natural Remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrom
Posted: 7/26/2007 9:35:53 AM
I have been giving this a lot of thought, as I practice a lot of natural healing techniques. A middle aged male friend of mine suffers from this condition. I have some of my own hypothesis and remedies I want to try, but I am also looking for other possibilities to make this easier on him. Prescribed medication has not worked for him.

It originally started 20 years ago as stress induced. He no longer has the stress of that career, but still has the IBS. In fact he is very relaxed now.

What possible suggestions for this? (and I can give further information later, but I want initial reactions first.) So what possible suggestions for a natural remedy of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

if your friend doesn't have a severe beesting allergy (quite rare ~ we're talking the people who go into shock), he can use propolis to reduce inflammation and irritation while boosting the immune system, along with acidophilus to encourage healthy bacteria. slippery elm, taken as a tea with each meal can help as well.

he should avoid wheat, sugar and dairy as these aggravate bowel problems.

i put my father on the propolis and acidophilus for his diverticulitis and he said within days he felt better than he has since he was a kid.

In addition to the above, Citrucel OTC is quite good for stabilization of IBS. It isn't as hard on the intestines/gut as psyllium fiber is.

I had IBS for several years, brought about by having to take a very strong antibiotic. It took almost a year, but acidophilus did eventually help. I took it in pill form, because I wanted the larger doses, but it's also available in many yogurts. (Look for live bacteria yogurt)
I also have to avoid greasy or fatty foods. Not so much of a hardship any more except for the occasional time when I really feel like a nice juicy homemade bbq'd burger...lol

What about an entire dietary change?

I had already intended on getting him to eat active yogurt and a few other things mentioned here, but I also thought to preface it with a digestional (is that a word?)cleaning from a fruit fast for a few days first. Nothing but natural organic fruit and clean, chemical free water for a few days before effecting the yogurt and other dietary changes. It seems he has excess bacteria of the unwanted varieties. I myself do an apple fast every other year when the orchards near me are ripe, and it feels bad for the time I am on it and everything is clearing out (toxins and etc.) but then afterwards for many months I feel much healthier than the month prior to the fast... wondering if this could help my friend, prior to affecting other changes?

anyone have any input on that? Will it have any impact on IBS?

Kudos to you if you can get anyone to change their entire diet, especially middle aged men.....lol.
Everybody should eat natural, healthy foods. Unprocessed, simply cooked and loads of vegetables and fruit. It can only help.
I'm not sure a cleansing is a good idea for IBS. I'm not a medical expert, but it seems to me that any good bacteria would be cleansed out with the bad. And what is lacking in the digestive system of someone with IBS is the good bacteria that helps in digestion.
Switching to a natural diet that includes all foods may take longer as a cleanser, but surely would have the same results in the end, right?

T-tapp and go wheat free.

Apparently, t-tapp was in IBS for dummies. It's kinda an exercise regime, or rather a series of movements that for various reasons, help with assorted health problems. I don't have health problems, I use it for fitness, and done properly, it can be intense stuff- but fun. (t-tapp.com)

I've known a couple people who had IBS symptoms, and went wheat free for different reasons, and realised their IBS minimized or went away when they went wheat free. Doesn't mean grain free, doesn't mean no carb, doens't mean gluten free, just wheat free- with the amount of health food stores around, it's not the difficult to do, and personally, I don't miss anything eating a wheat free diet.

A couple of my friends have IBS and both seem to keep it in check by watching what they eat. They each seem to have different triggers and it took them a while to find out what they were. Both of them avoid wheat and fatty foods though. One said hers always got worse if she overate, as well.

No pork, lard, no shellfish, shrimp etc, or any animal that is considered a scavenger, (vulture, snakes, too!!). Many years before I read about "unclean" foods according to the Old Testament in the Bible, I had quit using pork products because I got sick, (IBS) from them. I haven't had symptoms for a very long time. Just my 2 cents worth to say what made a difference for me!

I have suffered from IBS for over 10 years. I was very diligent about monitoring what I ate and how my body reacted. This worked for the most part, but of course there was the occasional 'set-back'. Recently, however, I found some much needed relief. I started to see a therapist for an unrelated manner. He uses hypnosis in his practice. Before seeing him, I did some research into hypnosis. I was quite surprised to find that hypnosis has been used in the treatment of IBS. During our first session, I asked about the treatment of IBS using hypnosis. As soon as the therapist found out that I suffered from IBS, he started treating that first. After 3 sessions with him focussed on the IBS, I was given a trance to listen to daily at home. I listen to it every night when going to bed. I am amazed at the improvement that I have seen over the last 3 months. On a side note, the IBS treatment also played a huge role in treating the actual issue that I went to see him for.

I'll have him look into that. Hypnosis. IBS for him is stress related to his former career. Therapy for both the remnants of stress and IBS might be useful. Though I know he is a little stressed right now with his fiance freaking out over how to do well for his mom. :)

The vitamin supplements may work, and I had heard about using the Kosher (loose Kosher) restrictions for combating gout, and IBS. Are the two problems related at all? I know he is prone to gout too, but usually beans are the irritant for both for him (and shellfish.)

hmmmm
I've had the best luck with a regular diet of:
**yogurt and twelve grain breads, apple sauce, puddings,Vit B75,lots of fluids, ginger in everything i cook (ie flavored oatmeal+ginger + cinnomin+some sugar- drink)and the odd drink of rye and coke or m.o.m for qwik relief of severe bouts of constipation!!lol.
**Mostly salmon ,tuna and chicken as meats of choice and very well cooked pork till its very tender like tuna, and lots of fruits and veggies.
**And avoid a sedintary lifestyle, but low stress levels as much as possible too.
**I've recently introduced my self to trying new things lately too.....mandarin dressing, pomegranate juice, one new thing at a time tho to see how yor system reacts to each new thing
and avoid anything with white flour as much as possible.!!.......it made a world of difference for me. Now i can work for 2-3 full shifts /2 days at work on 5 hrs sleep and still feel physically and mentalllly alert and abdomen not bloated and sick feeling like i used to b4 i made these changes to my diet and lifestyle. Unless i endulge on something i know i shouldnt have, then i feel like someone kicked me in the gut and carrying a bowling ball for a few days after!!!Then the worst part is passing what feels like a bowling ball.
and i lost 20 pds with no effort.......just by these changes!!!!.
Hope my trial and error experience with my diet helps...now i'm going to go back nd read what i havent yet in this thread.
After reading some more .......avoid diet that eliminate an entire food group---that i s just a fad!! U might want to look into more research on other conditions as well as these things are tricky to diagnose and not all dr. s are up-to-date on them!!. Ie siliac disease, diverticulitis and the like......good luck --most (but not all )the advice on here is really great depending on the real condition. Every body is unique, every condition is unique.....keep that in mind . ttfn

OK I am not positive that this is what I had but I do know that some of the symptoms that are mentioned is much of what I was going through. I started doing two protein shakes and two small meals a day and have never been more regular in my life. I credit this to two things 1. The protein shake combination and 2. Kashi Cereal. Here is waht I use in my protein shakes : 2 Scoops vanilla protein 2 tbls each flaxseed, oats, olive oil (except when using peanut butter) and plain vanilla. I then add in various other items depending on the mood I am in fruits and such if you want some good smoothies just send me a message and I can hook you up. With this plan i have lost 6 lbs in a week and feel better than I have since I before I had my son. Hope this helps.

Hey TL040 I tried to message you but you have restrictions so that I cant. Here are a few of my favs
Chocopeanut : to the previous mix add two scoops of chocolate protein, 2 tbls of peanut butter, and a banana
Orangecicle: Add 1/4 cup of mandrine oranges with two scoops of vanilla protein and a cap full of vanilla
Carrot Cake: Add 2 tbls of cream cheese, 2 scoops of vanilla protein, cap of vanilla, add splenda to taste
Peanut Butter and Jam: 4 large whole strawberries, 2 Tbls Peanut Butter, 2 scoops vanilla protein
I can not remember if I put protein in the other post but this is the amount of protein I use in these shakes not in addition if I put it in the previous post.
 I like it real....

For the most part IBS is an idiopathic word given to the masses when a Dr. cannot resonably to what the "problem" might be.

Generally, IBS can show up some similarities in ppl who have it, but the triggers are usually different for most.

Everything in ones life can have an effect on how the body functions.
Yes diet, excercise, suppliments, mental health all play a role...but inless one
starts to eliminate some of the "bad" things in their life...the situation will not change.

I love raw nuts...but most do not like me.
No wheat what so ever...most glutens set me off period!
No dairy...not a good thing for me.
No apples

Marshmallow root works well, pro-biotics help a lot, digestive enzymes.
Everone is different...but one has to start somewhere.

I have it too....and its being totally reversed by the cleanse i'm doing. www.drnatura.com Colonix advanced internal cleansing system. No fasting involved, no dietary changes needed.

Its 3 simple steps, 4 pills in the morning, 15 mintues later I take the fiber mix in 8 oz of apple juice, fill the bottle back up with 8 more oz of water, and make sure I drink the rest of the 64 oz of water for the day, then thier cup of herbal tea at night.

Its gentle, no need to be afraid of not being near a bathroom, and its extreemly effective. Read the testimonies, look at the picture gallery. That kind of stuff is getting cleared out of my system.

Also, I'm taking the probiotic suppliment to replace what has been lost due to antibiotic use in the past.

Since I started it, my dark under eye circles are going away, my nails are growing stronger and are thicker, I used the bathroom about 3 times a day now, (which is considered "NORMAL" and healthy, I have more energy and I've lost 10 lbs on it the first month. No more bloated feeling, no more achyness, no more heartburn or indigestion after a meal. My female cycle is also becoming shorter, less heavy and not so painful.

I've been recommending this to EVERYONE since I started doing it. I have a few other illnesses related to the environment thats out of whack inside me that is having a good effect on as well.

Just go and read it...you'll see.....

He's got an overgrowth of candida and a build up. The cleanse I suggested not only kills that, but it also gets rid of the mucoid plaque that is lining his intestinal track. It holds undigested food, toxins, poisions, chemical residue, hormones from the foods we eat, parasites and the above mentioned candida. It prevents the nutrients from the foods we eat being absorbed. The lack of probiotics in the system causes us to not make the b vitamins, and it IS our immune system.

The stuff ranges from light tan to black, its rubbery, the darker it is, the older it is, the harder it is. It can be the consistancy of tire rubber. Some of it looks like chicken livers in a pair of panty hose due to the natural shape of the intestinal track. Check out the pictures, I swear, you will want that stuff out of you. There are many many pics customers have sent in. YUCK!

Start a food diary that is the best way. Never drink water with your meals it will weaken your digestion. Eat more alkaline foods/water rich foods meaning fruits and vegetables. Chew food well without distractions this increases digestion. Limit meat, processed foods, caffine and sugar these foods make digest worse. Try the watercure but start off slowly. They suggest 4 cups a day and increase slowly.
