Is a guy that cooks *so* rare?

I like cooking. Even more, I like cooking and sharing!
People costantly seem to be suprised by this... and I always hear about what a great catch it makes me. For example, I took some garlic roast chicken and potatos to work with me today. I wasn't that hungey, so I split it with my co-worker. She went OFF about it! I'm wondering what's up with that?

Is this really THAT big a deal?

Don't you other guys cook?

In a way it is rare ,,,as women are thought of being the "homemakers" and men the bread winners. I like a man that can cook.

I use to own a resturant I REALLY enjoy cooking. However cooking for ONE just does not have the same appeal. Its always nice to share it with someone that appreciates your endevours.

Actually, I'd have to say the opposite is becoming the FAD these days. Less and less women/girls know how to cook these days. I blame it all on a "busy" lifestyle and instant meals.

Exactly, cooking from a box is way to easy so most people dont learn proper cooking habits. Its suprising how many people cant follow a basic recipe. Dang it, its been so long since I looked at a cook book I had to look up how to spell recipe.

I love cooking, though I don't often do it for myself. I don't mind leftovers, but I don't like eating them for 4 days in a row, and that's what ends up happening when there is no one else to eat what I cook. Or some gets thrown out. Either way, it's just easier to eat pre-prepared meals. And with my work schedule, I'm seldom home at meal times anyway, so I eat out a lot (it helps that one of my jobs feeds me).

But I do appreciate it when a guy does some of the cooking. Sometimes I just can't be creative enough to come up with new ideas to make. So it's nice to not have to always be the one to decide what to eat. It's also nice to prepare a meal together with a glass of wine. I'm a firm believer in always cooking with wine, and sometimes even putting it in the food. (yes, I stole that from a fridge magnet. so what.)

Fad shamd... I've been cooking since I was 5. :p

As for prepackaged food, well sometimes I have to resort to that as a time saver, but I still HAVE to do something with it. Chop some fresh garlic into my canned soup, baste a meat pie with olive oil and hit is with some spices, or find new and interesting things to do with ramen (try frying them sometime... hmm, yummie!).

I almost never work from a recipy either... I just play with things and remember what works.

The thing that seems so strange to me is that I was basicly raised to see cooking as a "manly" skill. A man's gotta eat and if he wants to eat well, he's gotta cook.

My dad has always done most of the cooking around my house, so I've never seen it as a gender-specific skill. Both my brother and I were taught how to cook at a very early age.

I can cook. Nothing too fancy but I can make some decent dishes. Pasta's, chicken or steak dishes is my preferred meals.

I dont recall anybody ever pointing it out to me like it was an rarity.

Cooking for me usually involves one of three things:

- a microwave and a can (I like the pull tab ones)
- a phone
- car keys and drive
- doing someone else a favour who does like cooking

Just don't enjoy doing it. I also don't expect anyone to cook for me but will help out with both the cooking and clean up after if they do. No, I'm not looking for a cookie :).

Try this sometime... it's so damned easy that you have no excuse not to give it a shot:

Ingrediants:
2 to 3 carrots
1 cup of Barley
2 cups of chicken stock (just get one of those tetra-packs)
4 to 6 piece of chicken (I like thighs 'cause of the higher fat/flavor content)
Hot Sauce (whatever your favorite happens to be. I like Blair's Deathsauce!)
Garlic Salt
1/2 to a full crown of garlic (depending on if you have a date the next day)
Whatever spices you happen to like

Prep:
Just put the barley in a small to medium baking dish (or cassorol dish, or whatever)
Make sure the barley is atleast 1/2cm deep
cut up your carrots and lay them ontop of the barley
Hit it with some spices.
Put the chicken on top of that. Try to make sure that all the barley is covered by either chicken or carrots.
Peal and crack your garlic, but leave it whole. Poke it in between the pieces of chicken. If you want, you can put some under the skin of your chicken to give it more direct flavor.
Mix your hotsauce in with the chicken stock and pour as much of it as you can over the whole thing. If there's more stock than you can get into the dish without overflow, don't worry about it. keep it handy.
the whole thing with some more spices.
chuck it in the oven (preheated to 180c/350f )
If you got all the stock in there, you can forget about it for about 1 and a half hours. If there's more stock, just keep adding it every once and awhile as it cooks.
When almost all the stock has been absorbed by the barley and the chicken looks yummie, pull it out.
Let it sit for about 10 minutes (this will let the remaining broth to be absorbed by the barley).
Dish out, eat.

It actually took me longer to type all that out than it does to prepair it.
Tonight, I'm going to play with adding some to the mix. Beer and barley just naturally go together!

WARNING! If you are on a diet, don't eat too much of this stuff! I'm one of those guys that doesn't gain weight, so I can induldge... this is my single sitting recipy, but for others it should serve 2 or 3 people.

well, shit, cooking is so easy, and as far as I knew, it impresses women.

i'd rather make a nice home cooked- candle light dinner, rather than hitting the burgerjoint and dealing with public, while trying to have a romantic night.

A good cook IS good in bed, just remember that.

i'm not much of a cook...but i do just about anything with eggs, and i have a great 24 hour marinade for steak that i use with thick cut slabs of tenderloin.

the marinade gets used again as well...it starts off the spaghetti sauce the next day!

I can cook some things if I follow the recipe. Someday I'd like to learn to cook many more things.

I hear this too.

I like to cook as well, learnt through observation. Heck, I can even bake a loaf of bread to go with the meal...

Some say it is an asset, like knowing how to thread a needle. I learn out of neccessity.
I look at it as an added bonus to the relationship if the guy can cook. Why put the burden of house maid on her. learn and share the responsiblity.

Does that make guys like us a better catch? I hope so!

I don't know about the rest but cooking can be a way to the heart ....... thru the tummy.

I love having a night at home where you've made a meal and just relaxed and enjoyed the flavors and smells.

If were rare I hope its not blue

I have noticed that most of the men I meet are better cooks than me. That's really not saying much, though.

I dunno about the heart. I say start at the tummy and then spin the bottle.

I thought the most direct route to the heart was with a dagger?

OT: I would LOVE to find a man who cooks.... and yes it is still a rare thing to find someone who not only CAN cook but enjoys it and makes something other than KD and hot dogs unless he's infront of a BBQ with a beer. I don't think it is so much the fact one can cook but that he's willing to HELP out in the kitchen and not assume it is the Woman's Domain.
NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING, turns a woman on more than a man who helps out around the house.

My experience has been that a lot of guys know how to cook and would luv to cook, but the women they are with overly critical.

The men would rather keep the peace and not get flack for their kitchen performance.
I have seen so many cases of guys being told to butt out, or ..."here let me do it....I can do it better, faster... go find something else to do while I handle it".

I think there are lot of men who are more than capable in the kitchen and just need an opportunity to strut their stuff.
