Why do people eat meat?
Posted: 7/30/2007 10:20:08 AM
Aside from cultural issues, why do people eat cows and pigs when they dont eat dogs and cats?

morally speaking it should be the same, right?

Apart from the fact that we find cats or dogs cute, do they have a more developed sense of pain than cows or other animals we eat?

I do not think so.

What are your comments?

I bet we'd eat them if they were tasty. I just assume they arnt tasty, I mean a skinned cat looks alot like chicken. But yea we probly dont eat them because they are pets, and they are not tasty i assume. If people were tasty id bet we'd get eaten alot more, wild aniamls attack humans sometimes but i dont think they eat them, just kill them. But i guess to most animals its wrong to eat your own species.

Ive never had squirrel, rabbit or snake or gator all things i want to try..... But to me eating meat is wrong but i still do it because hey one person not eating meat isnt gonna stop people from killing them and since they are going to be killed anyway i figure its better to eat them. But why eat meat when they is plenty of fruits and vegetables here to live off of? They doesnt require taking a life...... But who knows why we do anything.......

I would say most ppl dont eat dogs and cats cause they are cute but that being said they are not very fat and probably more expensive to raise than cows and pigs. I would think economicaly speaking animals that eat mostly plant material would be the cheapest to raise. Pigs, goats, cows, sheep, bison, rabbits, and so on. Also birds since you can feed them mostly grain. The animals we eat are fat cheap to raise and docile. If the animal does not fall into this catagory we wont raise it simple as that.

Now I also suspect the meat of animals that eat meat doesn't taste as good.

I think raising cats for food would be extreamly difficult and expensive. You have to pen them (they can climb) feed them (meat) catch them (you ever tried to catch a cat?) and slaughter them. Not fun when they have claws and teeth. After all that at the end of the day you dont have much meat.

Now ppl may be oposed to eating cats and dogs for other reasons but I think it has evolved from historical and valid reasons.

Aside from that I believe they raise dogs in china for eating but it is a luxury food.

If God didn't want us to eat meat, why'd God make animals out of the stuff?

Generally, predators eat herbivores, regardless of what species is dining and what species is dinee. Herbivores tend to be greater in numbers [often in herds], and are thus easier to obtain as well as less dangerous to kill. Predators are designed to kill SOMEthing, making them a riskier target, as well as a more rare one. Add to that the shared mentality - predators tend to have a social structure which can be mutually compatible between species. Dogs and cats can be incorporated into our "families", as co-hunters [or mousers], sentries, or guards/guides for herd animals. Herbivores tend to lack this - they may be friendly to an "owner", but rarely will they be part of the hierarchy. Pigs are an exception. Like humans, they are omnivores, and will adapt to a human hierarchy more like a dog than a rabbit.

I expect that the inefficiency of predators as a protein source is just secondary. The inefficiency of energy/nutrient conversion causes predators to be less numerous than herbivores, and thus not as good a choice as prey. Eat what's common and easy to catch, not something rare that fights back.

Scientifically speaking- it does make me think why doesn't the big drug companies invent a " food " pill, and we could go about our daily lives, and when we need our nourishment, just take a pill to sustain our bodies with what we need to survive?? This pill, if the drug companies ever came up with inventing it, would be the worlds' answear to farming, ranching, and a lot of pollution. Also hunters and fishermen wouldn't waste money on obtainning protein( meat)., and they wouldn't be needed....a pill, you say? Well the way technology is going nowadays, i would say, nothing is impossible, anymore....

You have to make that pill from something, so the pollution, refinement, etc remains. Add to that the fact that our cultures, rituals and passtimes so often revolve around food and intricacies of texture, color and flavor. Our digestive systems are designed to deal with this. A few millenia of eating pills, our digestive tracts shrink and shorten, small or absent teeth becomes normal, cultures change drastically...and a single disaster causes us all to starve due to inability to eat natural food sources.

Basically, not even a VAGUELY practical or desirable option.

Even if their was a pill heartless **stards would still hunt. havnt you ever heard of people hunting for sport? I dont see the sport in it since the animals dont have guns and arnt trying to kill you.... but anyways some idiots actuallly get pleasure out of it. And whats worse some of them are religious freaks that if a human life was took theyd get all upset, but sinces its just a worthless animal to them and not a valuable life then its ok, besides they put some bullshyt in the bible saying man rules over all animals, i think that was just put in their so we could go around killing just for sport....

I can't cite them offhand, but I would hardly be surprised if there were places, times and cultures where eating dogs and cats was perfectly acceptable. I'd venture that the reason we don't do it as a matter of course is a bit deeper than "They're cute". At the end of the day, I think the reason we don't order roast leg of Rover at the local diner is the same reason the ancient greeks didn't use steam power, even though they had a rudimentary steam engine. In a nutshell, they didn't have to.

1. Dogs, cats, and horses have all worked their way into useful niches for humanity. They tend to be worth more alive than dead. Transport, pest control, hunting herding and guarding ... I think the goodwill we feel towards domesticated animals today started more from practicality and grew into affection.

2. As stated earlier, herd animals make much better sense. More meat for less risk. I won't speak for taste, as I really wouldn't know.

Incidentally, the greeks never developed steam power further mainly because they didn't see the point, since slave labor was so much cheaper. It all comes down to economy. What gives people the most return for the least expense, effort or whatever, because the margin of survival might end up being just that close.

Brits don't eat horses or frogs. But the French do.
Some places eat dog. And monkey.

You can find almost anything on the menu somewhere in the world.

It's a cultural thing. Lol

People do eat dog, cat, rat, insects, and alot of other stuff that other cultures find "nasty". Humans are omnivors, we can eat anyhting. Its just how we are trained through our up bringing and societies norms to see other cultures foods to be weird.

I bet if you were to take a hamburget to one of the tribes in the Amazon Rainforst they will see it just like we see their foods, bats, grubs and such. (I don't mean that as a sterotype, i know they eat more than just those two things but for arguments sake i decided to just mention those).

You assume wrong. though i am a vegitarian now, i visited china and ate meat then. I have had a sample of just about everything. Cat is great.

But to me eating meat is wrong but i still do it because hey one person not eating meat isnt gonna stop people from killing them and since they are going to be killed anyway i figure its better to eat them.

If eating meat is wrong to you, stop. your moral standing will affect people around you, even if you only change yourself it is a good change.

In our society our votes in the polls dont mean anything, our only REAL votes are the dollars we spend. When you buy meat you are voting to kill another animal to replace the dead one you are clogging your arteries with.

The fact that so many others do it is only a reason for a lemming or sheep to do something, not a persons reason.

Many Native American tribes ate dog meat, especially in winter when wild game was scarce. Eventually due to western influence it became frowned upon. Rabbit use to be strictly wild game but more and more grocery stores are starting to stock it. When I was in Mexico, we went to a friends birthday BBQ and Rattle snake was what they had on the pit along with a pig and a goat slow roasting. I had never eaten sheep until a friend introduced me to a wonderful Lamb Curry recipe a few years ago. Never have had cat or dog though. Don't plan on it.

I have been a vegetarian for over a year and i found a great pill that everyone should look into. It's actually derived from seaweed plants and contains vitamins and minerals that you can't find in meat or common vegatables.
The source is called spirulina, which builds your immune system and prevents or fights diseases and chorella which is great for the digestive system. A lot of information is available, look into these minerals, they will increase longevity

Orcaana, the last market sector I'd like to turn my gastrointestinal future over to, would be the pharmaceutical companies. Over the last few years, to squeeze just a few more bucks out of us hapless suckers, they have suppressed reports stating that some of their drugs were downright risky.

Besides, how are they gonna stuff a double-pepp, mushroom w/onion and peppers into a teenie pill? Kind of like the Contadina commercial, but with no taste.

Spirulina and Chlorella are not from seaweed, nor are they minerals. They are single-celled algae, freshwater types if I recall correctly. They might be useful as supplements, but I doubt there's any reliable evidence they increase longevity. Mmmm...pond scum :>

This runs along the same thought I had FrogO. Other than the obvious 'It's difficult to eat an animal that cuddles up with me at night', carnivores eat herbiovres. Not only because they're easier to catch, but because it's simply healthier to do so. Take a look at what happened to us when cows were given meat and we ate them. Nummers.
Cats and dogs eat meat. Not as safe to eat as herbivores.

meat is tasty... and its perfectly natural for animals to prey on each other.. however, it would be nice to not have to farm + kill animals (this really bothered me when I was a kid, as I had alot of pets). imagine if we could grow meat artificially.. that would rock. But it isn't going to happen anytime soon.

I always ask my vegetarian friensd/aquantances what they would do if we could grow meat artificially.. they always try and change the topic. or tell me it will never happen. but they refuse to give me a yes/no answer hahah.. cowards !!!!!!!!!

We eat meat because we are omnivores. Our teeth show it, a combination of predator and herbavore. We eat whatever is available.

Those who say we "shouldn't" eat meat just don't want to look at their genetic history that goes back hundreds of thousands of years.

As for why we eat cows and such and not dogs or cats, well the domesticated herd animals are generally herbivores and don't need much attention to raise.

I only read the opening post.

Rule of thumb is to not eat carnivores, as that meat is more likely to spread disease to a system like ours. Likewise other omnivores (like pork) can do the same. Many cultures have dietary restrictions, and the original reasoning was safety. If you cannot safely eat the meat rare and fresh, it generally is taboo to eat. Dogs, cats, lions etc., etc., fit that bill - again as does pork. We have better cooking methods and abilities now, so that part is not as much of an issue.

Deer, goats, beef, lamb etc., if you kill the animal (healthy) you can eat it rare. Poultry well cooked, etc. Fish (some varieties) can be eaten raw. Much of it is tradition that is left over. Cats, dogs and horses have utilitarian factors, whereas beef, lamb, goat, pork are raised for food and clothing only. We keep cats to kill off vermin. Dogs for protection, Horses (which do not have the problem of disease ridden meat) have multi functional purpose, even today.

Besides, there are many cultures that will eat cute cuddly pets. Has nothing to do with morals, and everything to do with tradition which was started in safety.

(What about rabbits? People eat those everywhere, and they are arguably as cute as dogs and cats??????? Oh, and cat is very tasty, dog a little gamey, horse id dry, porcupine and beaver are greasy, as is raccoon though coon tastes fishy)

I think it is because for cows you have beef and for pigs you have pork. But for cats and dogs there is no food name available. If you come up with food names for dogs and cats, people will start eating them. For example, when you call it a pussycat you are half way there.
