I will give you a very specifc example. I am not single which to the database if you want to email someone excludes "must not be married" for contacting women. So given this fact, the women who are marked such are showing up in my matches that are sent to me daily..
It would be easy to do a stored procedure where there is a check of profile exclusions against the actual user to be matched.
The issue then comes down to infrastructure to do a match for each active user of their profile against the entire db. Its not too bad if you have spare cpu handy and a large memory set . Better yet, pre profile the users into "attached" and "not looking for attached".
select matches where attached != "yes" and nomarried = "yes" etcetc. (yes simple in writing, but dependant on db) | |

Posted: 8/27/2007 7:33:44 PM | The 'matches' you get are just based mostly on your list of hobbies and interests and that is most of it -- if you say "like petting puppu dogs" it will light up blue to show you others put that SAME response in their... click on it, that is a 'match' as far as the software is concerned. Its just a simple starter for matches... sort of a general, point you in the right direction kind of thing.
You want more detailed matches, use the searches others told you about above AND take the personality test and use that as well. Use the advance search, but eventually it comes down to mail -- ask them the questions about things that matter to you. Good Luck!!! | |

Posted: 4/21/2009 4:35:44 PM | I'm wondering if the assessment quizzes have any bearing on our matches. I'd also like to know what the compatibility percentages are based on. I, like so many others, seem to be getting matched up with women who are definitely not "matched" to me. I get smokers, devout church-goers, racial discrepencies, etc, etc. And some of those have been 90% or above. I have used the advanced search section and put in all the appropriate criteria, but.... I feel I'm wasting time just sorting through it all, and looking at just the higher percentage profiles, when "the one" could be at 70% for whatever reason. Maybe this is just what we have to deal with on a free site. I suppose there's always eHarmony. Murphy's Law says that will probably match me with my ex!  | |

Er......well, you have to set your age criteria preference. Go to Mail Settings and on the upper right, you'll see "age between" Simply specify the age range you want to be contacted by. This will also affect the matches that you get.
You should also be aware that all the criteria you set (must not smoke etc.) will not only affect who can contact you, but that will affect your 'My Matches' as well. | |

Can anyone tell my why I am constantly getting matches from the type of women I am not interested in? I was very specific in what I was looking for in a woman and I keep getting types that I'm not interested in at all and will never be interested in. Any suggesstions?
The very top Search Bar is a limited Basic Search Function and has no Bearing on your "Matches" as shown on the My Matches Page.
Thus Filters for your actual "Matches" is the Age Range, Distance, Contact Criterias, Non-Smoking if checked in your Mail Settings and some Intimate Encounter/Married Settings.
My Matches will not Filter based on Ethnicities, Religion, Body Type, Images, What you are Looking for, Astrological Sign, etc.
Ticketoride, I do appreciate the help in answering “How does the ‘My Matches’ work?” I know POF is wise; but I am not sure to be complimented or insulted when I go over to “My Matches” and the top person listed is clearly looking for “dark meat”. The credibility gets worse when you open up the profile.
I tend to use the advanced features to have more specific matches; yet if the other person is looking for something that is neither me nor I them, it is not “My Matches”….
While POF has limited workforce, the overall experience and the higher click rate per your advertiser’s market focus dollar may be better served in looking into improving the “My Matches” criteria.

Posted: 5/18/2012 11:34:40 AM | I feel that using your personal setting help alot with finding a better match. One thing I do that really weeds out the type of women that are not my type is I set my mail setting to minimum first contact must be at least 50 charactors or more. I enjoy when a woman at least reads my profile first and that is my biggest demand in any search, but if you use the option I suggested it tend to detour anyone from contacting you that never read your profile, there are ways around that, but anyone that takes those ways around that are very easy to spot.

How can I change my matches? It defaults to state level. No it does not. It may be forced into a wider search radius to locate enough matches for you. The mileage/distance is set on your "My Matches" page above your inbox. Set the mileage and click on refine matches. Its trying to locate a minimum number of matches for you. If it can not do that within your requested search radius it keeps widening the search until it can. If yours ENDS UP a state wide search I would say thats not a positive sign. Although better then country wide search or world wide of course. (smile)
Personally I think the whole "my Matches" is just silliness. Use the advanced search to find women to message. It's a lot more accurate with what YOU are searching for. Just my 2 cents worth here. Anytime POF starts picking my women for me and I dont get to set the search criteria and they use some back room mumbo jumbo to select them, (that they will not reveal or let me modify beyond age and distance) , its a recipe for disaster. Just saying... They are not exactly "The wizard of Oz" at this matchmaking stuff bud.
I want a CUTE and FUN gal. POF simply has no way of selecting gals I think are CUTE and FUN. I can select my own women far better then any computer program I promise ya.
