| Recycling Fees Posted: 8/2/2007 1:01:52 AM | How many people would recycle more if they had to pay, say 5 cents, on every tin can, milk jug or container they bought like there already is on pop and beer containers? Would you support it if the government brought in legislation to promote recycling? I know there would be objections that the poorer folks couldn't afford to buy their food if they had to pay a bit more, but in the long run, wouldn't we be further ahead? What do you think? | |

| Recycling Fees Posted: 8/2/2007 11:03:54 AM | Actually people would reycle LESS. That's a proven fact. Humans rebel by doing things they don't like by avoiding them and then paying more later.. "Since I've already paid for recycling I'm gonna make them work for their pay - "the garbage man can do the sorting he's well paid." ( In fact unionised garbagemen make huge salaries)
Tell a kid to clean his mess or else he'll have to take a "time out" and clean the mess up later?
What will every kid do?? Take the "Time out".
That's basic human nature.

| Recycling Fees Posted: 8/2/2007 3:44:38 PM | Hmmmm...interesting idea, but if I have to pay a fee I'll be wanting my deposit refunded when I return the empties to the recycling depot. I would no longer be donating my containers to the recyle bin for others to profit from. When did you last see a case of empty beer bottles set out for curbside collection?
I think that my community would suffer if everyone took personal recycling iniatives since my municipality actually makes a profit through it's programs. Presently the curbside recycling program funds other waste management projects. Yes---there's gold in that garbage especially since companies are required to use a percent of recycled material in their production.
Our local liquor store now 'promotes' recycling by refunding a dime on every liquor bottle that is returned to their depot. The Region has since lost the huge amount of glass bottles that were once donated to their program then recycled into a saleable product.
Companies may want you to think that you are helping the environment, but ultimately they're helping themselves. Try this experiment: Crush and keep all of your aluminum pop cans in a large garbage bag or box. Once the container is full, drive over to the nearest metal recycling depot and cash in your trash. Current (fluctuating) prices per pound are .54 in Canada and .84 in the US.
Becker's (variety store) used to have a deposit program on their plastic jugs of milk but the idea was unpopular with consumers. The jugs were large and heavy and shoppers usually bought milk before the original jug was empty and therefore had to pay another deposit.

| Recycling Fees Posted: 8/2/2007 5:17:49 PM | | We pay a recycling fee or enviro levy on all our plastic containers (milk, juice, pop) and tetra packs at the grocery store, and on all packaging at the liquor store. The problem is that we only get half of that back when we return certain containers to the grocery stores. If we want the full amount back on the deposit, we have to take the containers to a bottle recycling depot. | |

|
| Recycling Fees Posted: 8/2/2007 9:16:53 PM | | I think a better idea is to charge per bag of garbage (my municipality does) and keep recycling free. That way, there is incentive to use the blue and grey boxes as they reduce the amount of trash you throw out, thereby reducing your cost. | |

| Recycling Fees Posted: 8/3/2007 6:57:48 AM | | Around here we pay the enviro levies on certain products already and DON'T get any of it back and then on top of it we pay as part of our city taxes for recycling pick up. So if they were to impliment something like that here people would go beserk. The levy already drives people nuts as we're supposed to get the money back but don't. | |

| Recycling Fees Posted: 8/8/2007 2:15:35 PM | Here it is a joke tacked onto the local water/sewer bill, which costs so much that most folks actually save their own cans just in hopes of paying some of that monthly recycling bill! Truly absurd, another governmental screwup. good thing gone bad
now they are actuakky talking about arresting the folks who go and collect cans on their own. Some politicians bright idea inhelping the world all get a long, no doubt!
