John Lennon: Give peace a chance.

If John Lennon had survived the assassin's bullet and were alive today, what would he have said about Iraq and George Bush? John would have been 65 and ready to collect his social security pension.

He sang about love and peace, because he knew firsthand about violence and macho male attitudes. John Lennon was the first to admit he was a **stard at times. He once said being a Beatle felt like selling one's soul.

It would have been interesting to see what kind of music and what his thoughts on current events today would have been. It's sad that his very fame that he worked so hard for in his youth, is the result of what killed him back in October of 1980.

An obsessed fan, jealous and disillusioned, took away a voice for peace. We could have used that voice for peace and reason in such chaotic times that we currently live in.

But we have the music, amazing that songs like:

I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier
Give Peace A Chance
Imagine
Instant Karma
Working Class Hero
So This is Christmas

still ring true to this day.....sad too.

A sad commentary on the progress of the human race.

Everyone thinks that John and the Beatles are a huge influence simply because they are. You can hear it in everything. Just look at all the bands from the 60's they all wanted to be the beatles. ( Stones, who, pink floyd, hendrix, clapton) just to name a few. They were the first to really write and play their own stuff. Basically the best muso's who wrote killer tunes. I know they don't seem modern or rock n roll, but they were. They used to experiment all the time (tape loops) and just listen to helter skelter for rock n roll!!

Anyway just my 2 cents

In context (for those too young to remember) the music scene in the early sixties was pretty bad. The radio played mostly dull music by Pat Boone, Perry Como, and countless dreary groups and syrupy crooners.

The Beatles came out at a time when the country was in a depression about the asassination of John F. Kennedy. They were a breath of fresh air with a different look, humor and zany energy.

They introduced the concept of an entire album with good music. Back then, albums usually had one or two "hits" and the rest padded out with filler.

Revolver and Rubber Soul showed a progression of introduced innovations. Recording backward, feedback, the sitar, odd time changes, and the lyrics of John Lennon.

"Got to Get You Into My Life" with its blaring horns sounds as contempory as anything today.

Most of all, they were human. They fought, grew up and apart. John Lennon examined himself in the public eye. The first John Lennon solo album even has him singing "I don't believe in beatles...I just believe in me."

Warts and all. He was just a man. The fascination was going along for the ride and the more we learned about him and listening to his heart through his music, the more we learned about ourselves.

Maybe John Lennon is just a product of his time, and someone who listens to today's music filled with the Metallica's, Korn's, speed metal or rap music..... simply just can't identify with a past icon from the 1960's.

Maybe you just had to be there?

That would be a shame because these musicians are a rich heritage to be proud of. Saying they suck is like sticking your head in the sand like an ostrich. They influenced millions and they were a soundtrack to a generation. What's the point in disrespecting that?

Long live Lennon. The guy who said the beetles sucked got to state his opinion, so I think anyone who's that harsh about a guy as awesome as him blows dogs for quarters. lol joking...relax...*shields herself* I think he would have said that if the U.S wasn't trying to control everything, everyone woulda been fine. He would have an army of followers too listening on his every word of course and it wouldn't all be about "down with Iraq"

Is it lonely on that little planet? Yours is a voice crying in the wilderness. The Beatles are one of the most influential bands that every lived. They released an album that completely changed the course of music history: Sgt. Pepper. Most rock critics list this album either number one or two on the most influential albums of all time.

John Lennon was/is an icon. The Beatles are as well. I must say contray to an earlier post the Beatles were NOT the 1st to introduce an album of good songs. Also, they were not much of an influence to the Rolling Stones.....they were more or less competitors.Lennon and McCartney were excellent song writers and good but not great singers. Now, I'm a fan of the Beatles but I think they are overrated as RockNRoll influencers musically. After all the music was around nearly 2 decades before they even cut a record. Lennon like many artist of the 60's and 70's was VERY strongly against the war in Vietnam. I think there is NO question that Lennon would have very STRONGLY opposed the war in Iraq if he were alive today.

im not so sure about greatest musicians ever...but no doubt best songwriting team and songwriters in pop history.

Lennon was my fave.( even though i play bass and love mccartneys style)....very few moments i remember as clear as the first time i was told he had been shot...it was at 7:00 am in the morning my brother came in to my bedroom and told me...my brother is an avid fan.......has an awesome beatles collection of anything and everything one could imagine....i miss the fact that double fantasy had some of the best writing john lennon did in such a long time..great pop songs in true lennon fashion.....i can only imagine all the work he would have done from 1980 to now.....some good, some bad.(im sure he would have done some still with yoko) ..but most simply.....unforgetable

Hi

Once again a great post Toon...the "what if Lennon was alive today", truth is..would anyone wanna know, or care, that's the answer, its cause he's not here anymore, his life and words become legend, you die, you become popular, when Lennon was alive and promoting peace he was very unpopular, you if watch the film "Imagine", and see Cartoonist Al Kapp ripped John to pieces saying he was doing the peace thing for popularity and money, everyone in the room were laughing, you know, looking at Johns peace efforts in the late 60's and not a lot of people know that John and Yoko sent an acorn to every single world leader to plant an acorn for peace...and only 2 planted them:
Pierre Trudeau of Canada
Golda Mier of Israel

thats sad

John lennon will live on in his words, music is timeless, people will be talking about him many years from now. But like all good things...you dont realize what you have until its gone.

John would of course be against the war in Iraq.

As for the Beatles being good musicians, that's something that is subjective. Who is the best of anyhting? I think all of the Beatles were underrated as musicians. Ringo did more than just hold the backbeat after the group's music matured. He came up with some very creative drumming later on. Paul refined bass playing, sometimes creating melody. George knew how to REALLY play the guitar. And John was a master guitar player in my book. The little chord triplets he plays on All My Loving or I'm Happy Just to Dance With You really speak to me.

The Beatles and the Stones were competitors, yes, that is true, but for a few years, the Stones were also followers. The Beatles came out with Sgt. Pepper with its famous cover, and the Stones followed with Their Satanic Majesties Request. It was hard for anyone, including The Stones, to compete with The Beatles.

I often wonder what kind of music we would have gotten out of John if he was still around. Considering the state of the music world today with it homogonized sound, we need him more than ever!

Is there a connection with "Let it Bleed" and "Let It Be"? I wasn't sure.

I have the original 3D cover for "Their Satanic Majesties Request" Except for two songs, not a great album. But a collectable.

As far as what music we would have gotten. I wonder what John Lennon would have made of Nirvana? Would he have enjoyed Pearl Jam or Oasis? I know George Harrison did not like Oasis.

Maybe he would have liked....Bjork?

I am not a fan of him at all. I just don't get it. He was political. And everyone thinks we should bow to him? No thanx. I don't like people shoving there beliefs right down my throat. Then think we should accept this 5th grade writer as something good.

There would be no metal without them? LMAO! I think you had them confused with someone like Cream.

The Beatles were a terrible live band. And that was when they did play. They were originally pretty much a crappy boy band. And then went serious.

Everyone has there opinions. But I think the only one worth anything from that band was George.

HI

not sure ifs there is a connection, Their Satanic Majesties Request" is my fav Stones album and LOOK very closely on the front cover, as you will see the faces of all 4 Beatles Hidden, as a mark of respect to John and Paul's backing vocals on the Stones "We Love You".....bands stick together!!!!!!

I did not know that about the cover. Now I will have to take it out for a listen and look for the pictures. Cool.

John Lennon was an amazing talent. Doesn't matter if you don't like or understand him. He reached millions who did. The rest is history.

John Lennon is an all time favorite...His son Sean could potentially 'be' with Lindsay Lohan...That would put a smile on any father's face...including John's....

I take exception to the comment that the Beatle were a lousy live band. They were very refined entertainers by the time they dominated the US. They had spent several years entertaining in night clubs in Hamburg. The problem with their live tours were twofold: First there was never enough power in the sound system to actually hear them above the screams and crowd noises. They could not even hear themselves.
If you limit any of the bands nowadays to those limitations, they would not be any good either. The second problem was that in their subsequent albums, they started multi-tracking which made their songs increasingly hard and empty to perform live.
However, the quality of their music should be judged on their musical production on their records. Unlike the Monkees, no one will dispute that the Beatles played their own instruments. If you judge their product with the product that was out in the same time frame, I think you will find that they were quite talented musically both live and in the studio.
It is hard to say how Lennon would have ended up had he not been killed. I think he would have continued to re-assess himself personally and with getting older, he might have quit music altogether thinking himself totally obsolete. He probably would have sarcastically told Sir Paul to do the same. I think he would have reunited with the other Beatles but I think that would have been a brief thing much like a high school reunion. I think his growing sense of identity would have kept him from doing numerous Beatle projects. I think he would have been extremely hurt by McCartney the businessman and I know there would be continuing feuds.
Lennon never interested me with his politics. I resent the fact that he and Yoko took on peace like they alone had invented it. They came across as super egotist rather than peace activists. I know that he would have had a better relationship with Sean and I would hope that he would have patched things up with his older son Julian. Who knows if his marriage to Yoko would have lasted. He needed her as the motherly rock in his life yet he was far her musical superior. I would think that years of harsh criticism would have led him to leave her out of the music mix and make more creative music and lyrics on his own.
Well I guess that is my long winded answer.....hehehe....next question please.
